2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

FINAL from the other two teams in Group B...

Sweden 3, Czech Republic 2 - Sweden's Olivia Carlsson scored with just 8 seconds remaining in regulation to defeat the newcomers to the top division. Petra Herzigova gave the Czechs an initial 1-0 lead, Sabina Lambertz Kuller (SH) and Hanna Olsson (PP) put the Swedes ahead 2-1, but Aneta Ledlova knotted the score for the Czech Republic eight minutes into the third period.

Shots were 31-18 in favor of Sweden.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Nice move by J-Rock to block the shooting lane to the right of the net near the end of the 5 on 3.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Bit of a weak call on Saulnier at the end of the 1st, no?

Canada has to stay out of the box or they will pay.

Canadian forecheck somewhat relentless and paying dividends in the first half of the period.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Should women have their name plates BELOW the numbers?

A number of names are obscured by ponytails.

That's what the NWHL did, but the jerseys tended to rise up in the shorts. At least with the names at the top you can usually read the first few letters and get a hint.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Complete talent fest...quick game.

Glad to see Team Canada has almost completely made the transition to young/new blood like the US did years ago.

Not a lot of great scoring chances imo but the US is slowly stretching their lead with possession time in Canada's end.

Biggest advantage for the US so far has been their ability to avoid unnecessary penalties...not so for Canada...although the US just took one at the end of the 2nd.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

No. 1 Star: Hilary Knight
No. 2 Star: Alex Rigsby
No. 3 Star: crossbar!

GREAT hockey game.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

FINAL: USA 3, Canada 1

Goals: Fortino (CAN, PP), Knight (USA), Decker (USA, PP), and Knight (empty net)

Maschmeyer (CAN) - 35 saves; Rigsby (USA) - 22 saves (plus some crossbar help, as noted by D2D)

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Knight and Decker can still bring it. Great saves by Rigsby at the end. Two very fast teams. Glad Keller's turnover wasn't costly thanks to the crossbar.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Great game, fast, great goaltending for both teams. Canada took far too many penalties against a very strong Team USA POWERPLAY. We will get to see it all over again next week in FINAL !

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Great entertaining game.

Seen Maschmeyer play a number of times but never saw her this sharp...until Knight's first goal...that should have been a routine stop for any D1 goaltender...just misjudged it.

Great move and resulting opportunity/shot after first hesitating to get Maschmeyer to commit while trying to go around her and then shooting while falling by J-Lam earlier in the period only to be robbed by Maschmeyer.

Story of the game was Maschmeyer, Canada's inability to stay out of the box due to several undisciplined penalties while the US exercised that ability, Canada's relentless forecheck (which made the US discipline that much more impressive), Canada's missing 3 or 4 open nets (Kryzaniuk, Agosta, Poulin shorthanded hitting the crossbar after being handed the puck in front on Keller's miscue, and I forget the other one), the US's ability to outmuscle Canada in front of Rigsby and Canada's errant passes and lack of support and lack of flow for the most part in the offensive zone...certainly assisted by the US.

M-Lam sure likes to unnecessarily look for trouble in front of the US net after the whistle doesn't she?

Close to a full house and it looked like the crowd was into it.

Looked like at least a $37.50 game to me.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Keller was lucky that didn't turn into a goal...Nice win for the US.
She also took two penalties, with Canada scoring their lone goal on one of them. She displayed some great offensive skill, but not her best game defensively.

I have felt for a few years now that team Canada has focused on trying to build a womens team that played as ugly as most mens teams do. I thought that worked in their favor in Vancouver but mostly the refs don't buy that BS and is a big part in their not winning worlds. They certainly have the talent but they go out of their way to hide it with the thugishness.

Sure wish I could sleep at 10:30 instead of 3AM! Sound like a good one, sorry I missed it.

Yes, the Lams both engage in the practices I think would make them a big part of team Canada had they been born in the right place. I don't know if they feel they need to do that, to act as protectors for the rest of the team or not but they did it in college so probably not. SOme people just like to play that way.

As most of you know, the Lams Dad is from Canada and played University in the states. Their Dad is from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. I think they would be great additions to the Canadian team. Toughness is a Canadian thing. Haha, jk, sort of. They could have chosen to play for Canada, but lived and grew up in the US and choose to play for the country they felt most attached to. Met many of their family at international events, and these are Canadian relatives. They come all dressed up in the Red - White - and Blue. You wouldn't know that they are Canadian. They are big Lam supporters, which family should be.

Russia vs. Sweden $5:p

If memory serves me correctly, when it was in Ottawa a few years back, the Non-Canada round robin games were in the $10-20 range. At that time the Canuck Buck was worth a bit more.

They played with an edge, even in their pre-college days. I vividly recall one of them getting into fisticuffs with one of our Daughters (Who is 6 feet, and was a punishing D-man in front of the net in her playing days. She twice finished top 3 in PMs in the OUA, the Ontario CIS conference). That fisticuffs event was about 10-11 years ago.

Fisticuffs, not fistacups, unless that's a Canadian spelling. ;)
