2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

As most of you know, the Lams Dad is from Canada and played University in the states. Their Dad is from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. I think they would be great additions to the Canadian team. Toughness is a Canadian thing. Haha, jk, sort of.
As I was watching the 3rd period I realized that neither Monique or Jocelyne had been called for a penalty the entire game, and wondered if they were able to make it through the rest of the game if they would set some kind of record. Naturally, they did not disappoint, as Jocelyne was called for interference shortly thereafter...

Maschmeyer is the one who kept Canada in the game during all those early PK's. If Canada is to win this event, they will have to do a better job staying out of the box.
I was surprised that the referees called five penalties in a row (the first five) on the home team. All too often they will look for infractions to "even it out" a little but certainly last night that was not the case. When the crowd started to show their displeasure you knew that the streak couldn't last much longer. And sure enough the next one was on Keller, which even the Canadian announcers thought was a little soft.

Last thought: I was impressed and even amazed at the pace of play in the game, pretty much from start to finish. It was obvious from the get-go how much the game meant to both sides. Apparently someone forgot to tell the players that it was only a preliminary game. ;) I can't imagine that they'll be able to skate any faster and try even harder when the Gold Medal game is played on Monday.

Exactly my thoughts. Pace was incredible. I think the Canada fore check played a part in that. It kinda forced the pace for both teams.

Great game, fast, great goaltending for both teams. Canada took far too many penalties against a very strong Team USA POWERPLAY. We will get to see it all over again next week in FINAL !

Winner of that game gets #1 seed in Olympics

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Watch out for the new kids...

FINAL: Czech Republic 3, Switzerland 1

Tereza Vanisova scored twice in a 78-second span of the second period, Samantha Kolowratova added an insurance goal, and Pavlina Horalkova dished out two assists. Alina Muller scored for the Swiss after Vanisova's two goals, but they could not catch up.

Florence Schelling had a tough outing in net for Switzerland, yielding the 3 goals on only 17 shots. Klara Peslarova made 22 saves for the Czechs.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

FINAL: USA 2, Finland 1

Finnish goaltender Meeri Raisanen made 49 saves and Michelle Karvinen gave them an early 1-0 lead, but the Americans clamped down and got goals from Hilary Knight and Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson to get the victory.

Final shots on goal were USA 51, Finland 7.

USA expended a lot of energy against their big rival the day before, so the 2-1 score its not that surprising.

Anyone know why Noora Raty is not one of the Finnish goaltenders?

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Just curious...with these types of high profile games...whenever they are televised in the US, other than A.J., does the broadcaster bring in past Team USA players to do the colour commentary from the booth at the rink and possibly even to anchor the show at the studio?

Last night's game had the regular TSN women's hockey coverage crew of Rod Black doing the play by play and Cheryl Pounder doing the colour from the rink. Tessa Bonhomme anchored the show from the studio in Toronto...which makes sense since I think she is now a regular on TSN's Sport Desk, so, if so, she's on the payroll. Cassie Campbell appears to have moved on and Jennifer Botterill can be found on many women's hockey broadcasts either doing interviews at the rink on the bench or outside the dressing room and co-anchoring the program at the studio.

I think they always do a great job and I was wondering if US fans get the same type of added benefit from their tv broadcasts?

Didn't she hang them up after that well publicised interview she gave after her stint with UM? Notwithstanding that interview, I believe she then played for one season in Europe.

Not that I think that this is necessarily an answer to your question but she is in charge of female goaltender development at Mega Goaltending in Minneapolis. Maybe her duties there precluded the investment in time that this tournament required.

J Cassie Campbell appears to have moved on

Pretty sure Cassie Campbell is on the regular HNIC CBC broadcasts every Saturday. She has been with that outfit since her start in business. I don't recall her ever being part of TSN. Bonhomme has been with TSN for a while now appears to be getting a more prominent role as time marches on.

Yeah, I think you are right. But by "moved on" I meant no longer doing women's hockey broadcasts...with any network.

She is playing in a Finnish men's pro league this year as well.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Just did CIS (Canadian University) finals with Sportsnet 2 weeks ago. Yeah, I think you are right. But by "moved on" I meant no longer doing women's hockey broadcasts...with any network.

Thanks for the correction.

She just returned to this side of the pond two weeks ago following the completion of the season for the men's team on which she played. She has tweeted that she's in Kamloops, but just as a spectator.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Final from Group B...

Sweden 2, Japan 0 - Scoreless through two periods, Swedish veteran Pernilla Winberg lit the lamp with an unassisted tally 59 seconds into the 3rd frame, Emma Eliasson added a power-play insurance goal, and Sara Grahn made 16 saves for the shutout. Japanese goaltender Nana Fujimoto made 33 saves.

Sounds like a real lose arrangement with Mega then. I heard she was in Minneapolis back in December.

I wonder how she's funding all that world travel airfare with part time employment. Minneapolis, Finland, Kamloops, Minneapolis. Must be a great gig.

Ummm... rostered goaltender on a men's team (yes, minor league but still...) and working another job during the off-season? Plus some endorsement deals in her home country. That's at least three different sources of income.
