2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

See, I blame the poster who titled this thread and left out the word fun, because without that reminder, fun vacated the thread once things like "citing research," "r-squared of the correlation" and "empiricist" etc. were introduced.

C'mon, this is fun! I enjoy all the geek-stat talk.

After all that, not really much movement this week. That's disappointing.

Clarkson at #7 still surprises me. Against Wis/Harv/Quinn they are a combined 0-3-2 so I see why they would be rated below these teams. Against the teams below them, they lost 2 at home to BU, lost (at home) and tied Cornell and have a 2-1-0 record against SLU. So I would put them ahead of SLU but having them ahead of BU and Cornell I guess the shading in my green and gold glasses is not as intense as most of the voters. ;)

momentum-going-playoffs"

no argument there, but we weren't talking about momentum, we were talking about a team improving over the year

the first article you cited was talking about momentum, so I didn't bother to waste my time with the other articles believing you were providing evidence to something we weren't even talking about

Those articles are about the fact that winning percentage late in the season isn't a useful predictor of how a team will perform in the playoffs. That's true whether you call it "momentum" or "improving over the year." If you don't want to read them, fine, but then it's idiotic to ask for the citations in the first place.

If there were actually such a thing as a "useful" predictor of how a team will perform in the playoffs they could just dispense with the playoffs and save everyone a lot of time. But that's why they play the games...because there ain't no such thing. Beyond casual, good natured, light hearted discussions of the playoffs, or any competition for that matter, such topics are just black holes that suck the unwary in to irretrievably waste their valuable time which could be productively spent elsewhere.

Live comparing strength of schedule! :)

Beside, what really matters is that all important first goal.

This is only true if you have an incorrect idea of what a predictor is. Predictors identify probabilities (or, more accurately, probability distributions, though in the case of an event with a binary outcome like single game they amount to the same thing), not certainties. There are very definitely useful predictors for the outcome of the playoffs but that doesn't mean you should bet your house based upon them.

I rest my case.

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

OK I will get things started for this week even though there are some HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE games on Tuesday.

1. Boston College Until they lose, cupcake or no cupcake, they stay at numero uno
2. Minnesota Of coarse maybe they should be #1
3. Wisconsin They are playing like a #1 team
4. Harvard Do they deserve this spot after losing to Princeton?
5. Quinnipiac You can't beat Harvard so you don't deserve to be higher than Harvard
6. Minnesota-Duluth Maybe they should be #4 but then they go and lose and tie UND
7. Boston University Who knows where this jeckel and hyde team belongs
8. Cornell IMHO they could be the #1 team in the ECAC and right now are playing like a top 4 team, Jenner, Saulnier, Fulton and O'Connor WOW!
9. North Dakota This weekend shows that they deserve some consideration
10.St. Lawrence-Clarkson Winner of Tuesdays game gets #10 spot, the loser is out.

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

You figure they might deflate their pucks a bit to gain an edge on pass receptions?
It's possible, they've been known to do that up in New England. But for this reason their "puck girl" will be under intense scrutiny. ;)
