2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

I think there have been some good points...and one I'd like to address.

I think the smarter eastern schools have got to get some top western schools on the schedule. You could say 'well, yeah...but they won't schedule us'. Well they might but it might not be a fair deal. Its simple...due to SOS western schools are loaded with tough games. They have no incentives or interest in travelling east to make their schedule harder...when they're probably satisfied leading the country in SOS. Eastern schools...Harvard, BC, BU, others looking to crack national recognition need to take a 1 for 2 deal or even a 0 for 2 deal to get into UW, UMD, ND, MN. They need to do it to give a reality check and get them battle tested. They need to do it to evaluate western play systems first hand. They need to do it to get accustomed to playing west of the appalachians as that's where many playoffs will be. They need to do it to get exposure to MN, arguably the best recruiting grounds for young ladies in the world (and I don't think that's an exaggeration). And they're going to have to ask nicely for the opportunity. Because they need to do it for the good of their program.

Clarkson's schedule in the last 6 years has included a top WCHA school in 5 of the 6 years:

2014-15 at Wisconsin 2
2013-14 North Dakota 2
2012-13 at North Dakota 2
2011-12 -
2010-11 Minnesota 2
2009-10 at Minnesota 2

They don't seem to have an issue with scheduling a series against a top WCHA school. Also in 3 of those years they have faced Mercyhurst in a 2 game set.

Hmmm...and which eastern team has themselves a championship trophy?

Coincidence?

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

The problem is though, if you schedule tougher teams and lose, despite the fact that you are ultimately a better team, you may not get a chance to prove it, you’ll be left out of the season ending tournament.

Potentially, but A) even if they lose a few games out west, their SOS will improve, and the experience over a whole season might just result in a W or two elsewhere B) they need it for the long term. Not picking on them...but its too obvious...BC could have easily hung a couple extra of Ls on their schedule and still been a #2 PWR. Even dropping to a 3 or 4 PWR couldn't have hurt in aspirations for a NC. Also, it might have even resulted in picking up another recruit like Minnesotan Bizal (must be one of their top prize recruits coming in next year). I'm a believer in the benefits...and perhaps you are as well based on your MN high school reference.

Excellent point.

Someone more motivated than I am would have to do the PWR numbers but I believe on faith that had BC scheduled MN, WI or ND instead of some other NC opponent & lost both games they still would have made the tourney. The losses may have made no difference in the end but then again they will never know. I don't know had hard getting quality NC matches set up but if a coach made an intentional choice to not look for teams they view as a comparable challenge just rig the numbers enough to sneak in they, and their team, will be disappointed sooner rather than later.

I if a coach made an intentional choice to not look for teams they view as a comparable challenge

it is the modus operandi of college scheduling across all sports and schools
although there are a few exceptions, historically Notre Dame in football for example
build your team record in order to qualify for the NC$$ tournament

Excellent point.

Not at all.

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

My shot at a pre-season poll:

1) Minnesota
2) Boston College
3) Wisconsin
4) Harvard
5) North Dakota
6) Clarkson
7) Quinnipiac
8) Cornell
9) Boston University
10) Bemidji State

NoDak a Bold Prediction? A gamble for sure. Pretty murky after 1-4. Not unlike 2014-2015

New thread warranted I suppose.

Oh man yes. I will do that. I'll also put up a link to the new Pairwise calculator (NEW AND un-IMPROVED: featuring Merrimack)

Unless Cornell has one heck of a freshman class I do not see them as a top 10 team. They graduated the Fulton-Jenner-Saulnier line that accounted for 56 of their 108 goals and 87 of their 184 assists. Their top returning scorer has 9 goals. They do have talent but is there enough to call them a top 10 team, I have my doubts.
