2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

This would also work ;)

1. 145 Minnesota (10) 1-2 (1) 1
2. 140 Boston College (5) 1-2 (2) 2
3. 115 Quinnipiac 3-4 (3) 3
4. 110 Wisconsin 3-4 (4) 4
Funny thing is, the way the bottom 4 is shaping up, this would probably give you the exact same bracket, with the only difference being right of last change in the final.

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

My guess is the NCAA would like the season to end with this list just like this, it guarantees an East/West final game (assuming no upsets). It would probably be best for the game also as it should draw more interest that way.
I think that match ups of East/West teams are what generates the most interest, and not just in the final. We don't get that many in the quarters because of the "reduce flights" requirement. So the more we can get thereafter the better. If those were to be the final four teams, the bracket with East on one side and West on the other generates one and only one East/West game at the Frozen Four, with semifinals that are repeats of games that have already taken place during the season. If the two East teams are on different sides of the bracket, then you have at least two and possibly three East vs West games at the Frozen Four. The semis match teams that haven't met this year or even last year. IMO, that generates far more interest than all the retread games that we are usually served.

I don't think that many people pay any attention until the finals. In a perfect world there would be more interleague play so the PWR was more reliable & then 1-8 would be paired up by position & fights arranged if necessary. It seems to me the first criteria for the NCAA is least travel not correct seeding. My impression with the men's side, where travel does not appear to be as important a criteria, is that the NCAA loves to try to get a "mixed" final and not 2 teams from the same conference.

exactly

what we don't need is a MN/WI matchup and a BC/BU matchup in the NCAA

if BC stays #1, and Quinnie ends up over WI, I'm fine with that

of the 14 finals 3 have been same conference matchups. If you want to avoid retread games then someone is going to have to figure out a way to handicap the top 8-10 teams in the nation so they don't always show up at the tourney. There have only been 11 teams in 14 finals and only 4 teams have ever won the whole thing, 3 until last year.

What group of people are you referring to here? For the teams involved, you have several days to build up the semifinal locally, but only one day off before the final. If people aren't aware that the semifinal was about to take place, they usually aren't suddenly all interested in the final. Now it may be that because the women's FF semis conflict with more men's conference tournaments that they get overshadowed for fans of both genders. But I wouldn't write that off to the fans not paying attention in that case.

I think they're referring to the general public.

I don't think it's that much of a HOT SPORTS TAKE to say that the average joe who might be interested in taking in the Frozen Four but can only go to one game will choose to go to the national championship game.

Just look at ticket sales.

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

But if they are both sold out -- as they figure to be this year -- ticket sales isn't much of a gauge of relative interest.
Okay, but

1) In cases where they are not both sold out, the final will always have higher ticket sales, and
2) In cases where they ARE both sold out, the final will always have higher demand.

I was thinking more from casual fan through non-fan, not the folks who show up for games regularly. A couple years ago scalpers got $200 for a ticket to the final & all that had to happen was the Gophers to be laying at home after going 40-0-0 up to that point - those 'fans' are the ones I meant.

I think this is true EXCEPT when the home team makes the FF but does not make the final. Should that happen this year, and two Eastern teams are in the final, there will be plenty of tickets for sale outside Ridder.

I'll give you that one -- that's more the exception to the rule, though.

Or you could have a year like 2009 where three WCHA teams made the FF. Had that been at a Western venue, there would have been a lot of ticket demand for the semis. Four teams should draw more fans than two. The reason this is not true, is because some programs really don't have much for partisan fan bases.

I'm not saying there aren't exceptions, but generally, in the vast, vast majority of cases and across all sports, a semifinal will be less attended, less watched, and less in demand among the general population than a final.

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

1. Boston College - They keep winning
1. Minnesota - They keep winning against better teams

Do I really need to bother ranking anyone else...okay, here goes anyway

3. Harvard
4. UMD
5. Wisconsin
6. Quinnipiac
7. Clarkson

Wow, this is getting really tough...

8. Cornell
9. BU
10. St Lawrence

Not receiving votes: BSU, UND, OSU, MU, DC...

I will revise my rankings probably after tomorrow's games - just wanted to give my opinion on FRI/SAT results by downgrading several teams.

I don't think St. Cloud and Mankato are better than QU, BU, and UVM lol

That's a good point and it's not just on the top of your head. It's nice to see BC get weened off their cupcake diet.

Also it's fun to see the accolades for said squad, coming out BC-Land that sounds an awful lot like descriptions of a certain team out west. ;)
