2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

the Badger fans didn't try to sell it as a great performance.
I assumed it was! That's why I didn't poke any fun at the Badger fans for needing OT to get past a struggling, lowly Bemidji team that would CLEARLY, OBVIOUSLY scrape the bottom of Hockey East!

If we're judging strength of schedule by how well each opponent was playing in the small sample size of games right around it, BC hasn't played a quality opponent yet.

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

Can someone please explain to me the logic behind ranking UMD below Cornell even when UMD easily swept Cornell in Duluth? One of you even has UMD unranked. I understand this is just a poll for fun but I'm still interested in the thinking behind it. Also, I think BSU deserves to be in the Top 10 even though they lost to Lindenwood. I'll post my rankings in a bit.

Well, BC tends to beat teams so badly that they start to get all existential and question the meaning of their existence. That can make you lose focus.

I think some people are probably thinking that Cornell has sufficiently recovered from its early season collapse to start ranking them based on their expectations and who they think they would beat come tourney time.

I'm not quite to that point yet, personally, but that's my guess.

Also this time of year I think we start to get a lot of different ranking philosophies as we approach the end of the season and what people are looking at to determine relative strength evolves -- a) perceived talent vs. b) results only vs. c) some mixture of the two vs. d) who they think would win against who in the tournament vs. e) who they think the Pairwise will select the tournament vs. f) other.

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

1. Minnesota-- I believe they could beat any team in the country... unless that team is Bemidji, apparently
2. BC-- Although undefeated, their weak schedule works heavily in their favor
3. Quinnipiac-- After the last two weekends, I cannot justify putting Wisconsin third. But OT vs Syracuse??
4. Wisconsin-- After the last two weekends, I cannot justify putting Wisconsin third.
5. UMD-- Won 15 of the last 17, and 3 of 4 since being thrown into a media circus
6. Harvard-- three third period goals vs Dartmouth.. Can't let that happen this late in the season.
7. Cornell-- Handled BU but then seemed pretty challenged by Brown
8. BU-- Competed with BC but then followed it with sketchy performances vs. Cornell and Northeastern.
9. Bemidji-- Proven they can beat the top teams, but still puzzled by losses to Lindenwood and a season sweep by OSU
10. Clarkson-- Only because OSU's sleep at the hands of UND has them dropping out

Receiving votes: OSU, UND, Mercyhusrt

I believe you meant Robert Morris, not Syracuse. They also tied Penn State and Dartmouth, two other unranked teams.

I think it's because Quinnipiac is a lunch-bucket, workman-like team. If they don't give 100% all the time, they can get into an overtime period with any team you'd consider weak. This is probably the most over-achieving team of 2014/15. They are ranked #3 on sheer effort. While they do have talent, it's not #3 talent. So quality teams can beat them, and I think this upcoming stretch vs the talent-laden teams of BU, BC and Harvard might expose some of what I'm saying. In most cases, I think when QU wins a game, the other team is shaking their heads saying "we could have beat them."

Yeah. Wow sorry. Was thinking of Mercyhusrt and where they should be placed after their weekend. I think what you said about QU can be said for Bemidji as well. I haven't seen QU play personally but they way you describe them is very similar to how I would explain Bemidji's resurgence this year.

Also, that first line sounds a lot more rude than I hear it in my head. Just saying wow to myself for that error. Just want to clarify so I don't offend you. Thanks for pointing out the mistake!

Given the low number of comparisons my assumption is that all of these polls are developed & then removed from the colon of the poster, or is that what you meant by "other"?

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

A lot of top teams didn't have great weekends, raising the question of whether they're in second-half slumps or just, er, didn't have great weekends, so the ratings are even more of a guess than usual.

1 Minnesota -- Dominant against Kato, although that isn't saying much, but they held form this week and BC raised questions
2 BC -- Vermont play well against us, but we shouldn't have any trouble putting goals up on them. More worrying was the way the production was limited to the top line.
3 Quinnipiac -- three games coming up that will help establish whether they're really a top-four team or a top-eight team who've benefited from a weak schedule to date.
4 Wisconsin -- Five goals in four games? Like BC, marked down for not quite meeting expectations recently; unlike BC, it shows up in the results. I expect at least three points this weekend though.
5 Harvard -- Everyone's allowed an off game every so often, and Dartmouth can be very dangerous, so they hold.
6 Boston University -- Pasted by Cornell, unconvincing against Northeastern, but still getting the results overall even if it isn't pretty.
7 Clarkson -- WINP greater than UMD by 0.01, OPWP greater than UMD by 0.0003, so I have to put them higher. My gut is that UMD would take three out of four, but my gut is unreliable.
8 Minnesota-Duluth -- Unconvincing against St Cloud
9 Mercyhurst -- *very* unconvincing against Syracuse.
10 Cornell -- both WINP and OPWP are above .58, which is amazing. They're the only team with both WINP and OPWP above .55; other teams with OPWP above .55 are Northeastern, St Cloud, UNH, Minnesota State, which gives you a sense of how tough it is to do well against that SOS. Unlikely to get an at-large bid but clearly capable of a big push in the ECAC tournament.

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

I was taking a look at the conf standings and my oh my looky what I have here, only 2 teams in HE have winning records. And mighty BC didn't crush Vermont like the cockroach they are?

Q vs WI for 4th...Q's quality of schedule is weak (3 games against ranked opponents 2-1), UW's is strong (7 games against ranked opponents 3-3-1, with 4 against #2). Q has 3 more and UW has 4 more against ranked opponents coming up. Each's next 2 games are against ranked opponents, so that will really tell the tale. After this weekend UW, Q, Clarkson and BC could get all jumbled around. I think it's quite the pivotal weekend for home ice in the ncaa's.

I don't know, they beat North Dakota who gave your Badgers plenty of trouble :)

Long season, my friend.

Re: 2015 USCHO Posters Poll -- 2nd Half

1. 145 Boston College (10) 1-2 (1) 1
2. 140 Minnesota (5) 1-2 (2) 2
3. 115 Wisconsin 3-4 (3) 3
4. 110 Quinnipiac 3-4 (4) 4

My guess is the NCAA would like the season to end with this list just like this, it guarantees an East/West final game (assuming no upsets). It would probably be best for the game also as it should draw more interest that way.

This would also work ;)

2. 140 Boston College (5) 1-2 (2) 2
3. 115 Quinnipiac 3-4 (3) 3
