2015-2016 USCHO Posters Poll

Re: 2015-2016 USCHO Posters Poll

The Gophers lose four. Sure, Sletta almost never got to play, but she performed her role flawlessly and was a positive influence in the locker room. There were numerous games where she was one goalmouth collision away from being the most important player on the team, so although she wasn't a regular, I don't think she can be ignored altogether. As for the other three being solid, I think they were better than that. All three topped 100 points in their careers, and when you look around the country, there aren't as many of those players as one would think. As far as Minnesota rosters go, you could probably list Lorence under solid, but Bona and Ramsey were Kazmaier finalists, Ramsey being a two-time WCHA Defensive Player of the Year, so solid is an undersell. Minnesota is the favorite at this point, but like everyone else, it has questions to answer.

Three returning all Americans, arguably best frosh in America Kelly Pannek, best junior player in Canada Sarah Potomak, best high school player in Minnesota Taylor Williamson, national junior champion leader Sophie Starzynski. A dominant national championship team all year long.

The Gophers are loaded, they are deservedly the number one team in the country, and you're waay underestimating them.

I see what you did there.

Let's not get all BC fan carried away yet...

That's not what where I was commenting. How do you know at this point what my estimate of the Gophers is? I was talking about the holes they have to fill, and I agree that there are people with the potential to fill them.

Did just I take a small inference to make an off tangent - and possibly off the mark - flame of your post? Sorry about that.

As Brookyone pointed out, close to BC fan level hyperbole. You're just missing the first couple of words "clearly the" to start off your descriptions.

Nice nickname for Sophie Skarzynski if that's what you intended.

Re: 2015-2016 USCHO Posters Poll

I think you left out the word "only" there...

You boys get a pretty swelled trash talk after just one season without the usual UNH upsets BC game.
We are returning 75% of last year's points and 80% of goal production.
We were extremely young last year, with a rookie class of 7, and a transfer from D3, but improved slowly and steadily, and ended up giving Northeastern all they could handle in the playoffs. This year's Rookie class is looking strong, had successful High School / Junior careers, and have worn their country's colors.
I think the Wildcats will continue to build on the foundation they worked on last year. I expect them to be consistently competitive. There's no reason to think they can't beat anyone in Hockey East that doesn't have their home rink in Boston, and who knows what they might do against the flatlanders;)

So you are predicting a UNH over bc upset after all.

Re: 2015-2016 USCHO Posters Poll

there seems to be a lot of importance placed on % of goals returning

just an FYI to the math challenged, if the person developing the spreadsheet and starting this thread had simply used total goals returning, it would have more validity

examples:
Team A scored 200 goals last year, they return 150, they lost 25% of their goals, but 150 is a lot of goals, good enough to be a contender
Team B scored 100 goals last year, they return 90, that's a 10% loss, they'll be lucky to win half their games this year

it should be obvious a better indicator is the total goals returning, the more the better
% goals falls under the "statistics don't lie, but the people that use them do" category

that is all, have a nice day

We both know that you realize that no one is making the argument you say that are making (which is to say, no, nobody here thinks Penn State is going to be a better team than Minnesota). But between you and me I applaud the effort to try and ramp up the excitement here on the boards as the season approaches.

That reminds me, you and me should chat off-forum and plan a SUPER-MEGA-TROLLTASTIC TAG-TEAM TROLLING EXPERIENCE for everyone...

Re: 2015-2016 USCHO Posters Poll

Triple post!

The biggest flaw in looking at percent of scoring returning, I think, is that the teams with very little scoring in the first place who do graduate a high percentage of their goals may well be replacing those "meh" players with younger players that have more talent. I.e. I think it's Providence that loses, like, everyone on their team, but given how bad they were, there's a somewhat decent change that their incoming recruits might actually be better than the seniors who are leaving. Not a great chance, but still, my point remains.

This is why we nerds (pokey's implication being that I'm a nerd... which I am! Nice one, pokey) like to use statistics as tools at our disposal to make informed decisions.

You wouldn't use just a hammer to build a house, but it would sure come in handy.

Lol the old "we" versus "they" never gets old.

it bears repeating, it's the GOALS stupid!

the winner isn't determined by assists, it's goals

Mankato proved you wrong last year, I think everyone thought they'd improve, even the WCHA coaches who placed them above Bemidji in the preseason poll last year, but it didn't happen.

people are overly optimistic in thinking freshmen will replace seniors, it doesn't happen.

You're right on this one, old boy. It doesn't always work out the way we expect.

I think you're right about this one too. Everyone expects every high end recruit to have an Eichel Effect.
