Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

After three games to evaluate the changes, my view is that I like Wolfe a LOT as a D.

She is assertive and confident moving the puck, a very strong player at this postion.

And if Wolfe is a D that moves Garzone back to F and here again my view is that I like Garzone quite a bit up front.

She has been fine at D but watching her back up front it just seems like her natural in game instincts are better suited to F than D.

I think the change has made the Gophers stronger.

I agree with you on Wolfe. She usually puts the puck where it is supposed to go. She had the one high-profile "oops!" moment where she wound up on her posterior and a two-on-one resulted, but she does a lot more good things than bad. I think Garzone is starting to get more comfortable, but she hasn't played all that many game shifts at forward in her Gopher career, so it will likely take time for her to reach her potential there. The more I watch Stecklein, the more I fully comprehend how big a hit it was to the team last year when they didn't have her services. It kind of did to the back end what losing Kessel did up front this year. Stecklein defends the two-on-one rushes as well as anyone, and she's very patient about holding the puck even when pressured, rather than just throwing it anywhere for the sake of getting rid of it.

I like Wolfe's potential at D, too, but there were several incidents last night that would have been scary had the game been closer. Late in the third she had the puck behind the net and brought it out almost through the crease with a forechecker in her face.

I agree, and would add Haley at F
despite where they may have played in HS, all 3 appear to take to these positions like a duck to water
with Kelsey Cline playing so well at D, they have found the 6 D, that IMO, approaches 2012/13 in skill
no small accomplishment, the only better blueline corp in the world would be Team Canada & USA
if they need a sub, they can always move Garzone back there

so, IOW, she plays like every other blueliner ;)
that sounds more like an endorsement than a criticism

Brandt is killing my fantasy team, I drafted her #1 overall. What gives? Is she going to turn it around or what?

Lee Stecklein is growing, her listed height on the roster is up to 6'!

How many games can be played before a medical redshirt is not allowed? Not even sure where to look that up, but I'm betting someone here has already done that.

A medical redshirt, called a "medical hardship" by the NCAA, can be granted by the governing body for a season lost completely or almost completely to injury. If a player plays in 30% or less of his/her team's games, then suffers a season ending injury, a medical redshirt may be granted. On rare occasions, a player may be allowed to play in his or her sixth year of college if he or she suffered a serious injury which kept him or her from playing for more than one season.

Thank you for the info!

The article also confirms that Kate Flug will miss the rest of the season.
College career not going very well for Kate Flug. Hope she can bounce back and finish strong if that's what she still wants.

There are some other former USA u18/ Minny Products not doing very well as well.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Eeyore mentioned the difficulty the team has finishing. I've been thinking the same thing. I checked the stats, and it is definitely a trend.

The 2010-2104 stats are for the whole season:
(sorry, the tabs are making this less clear than I hoped when I posted this-it's per game stats)

Shots For % Goals For Goals Against % Shots against
2015 41.4 0.095 3.9 1.2 0.058 21.2
2014 40.4 0.118 4.8 1.2 0.054 22.2
2013 38.5 0.137 5.3 0.9 0.04 21.9
2012 38.5 0.115 4.4 1.3 0.058 22.9
2011 34.1 0.102 3.5 1.8 0.062 29.3
2010 34.7 0.093 3.2 1.9 0.072 25.6

It is striking to me how much they don't feel like the #1 team, how vulnerable they seem, yet how dominant they still are.

Clearly BC deserves the #1 ranking at this point. It will be interesting to see how the bottom half of the Gopher roster develops throughout the season, and how they are playing at the end of the year.

I still think the Gophers are enjoying not being #1 for a minute after the pressure of the streak and all of that the last few years.
