Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Whew, another close one! Did not get a chance to view, but from the shot totals (43-19) it would appear that the Gophers played pretty well but ran into a hot goaltender...certainly not the first time the Gophers have had a tough time scoring on Mowat.

31 blocked shots by Bemidji. That's why it can really be a struggle against them especially if they take advantage of a couple of opportunities when an opposing goalie doesn't post a .900 save percentage.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Hot goaltender was less relevant this time, I thought, and just that tight defense and shot blocking that BSU has. A lot of our shots weren't really tough saves. I thought it was kind of a weird game. "Pretty well" might be accurate for how they played, but not great. A lot of turnovers in the defensive zone, some of them caused by BSU but certainly not all of them. Gophers were not playing with desperation or a lot of intensity most of the day, but they had some extended periods of very good play. Bemidji is a good team. Again for me, the Gophers sense of calm that they always carry was frustrating as it often is when they are in a lull, although I think ultimately it serves them well.

I'd hate to see them play like this against BC, but I don't suppose they would, right?

Really quite different styles. BC is all in on offense so that would certainly be a challenge for the defensemen but Minnesota should be able to do things like Harvard did in BC's zone to create problems for them.

If they do meet BC I'm guessing the stakes will be a little higher.

BSU did their usual wonderful job of blocking shots, the Gophers probably had 20 shots blocked in the first period alone so most of the 10 SOG they were credited with were no really scoring chances. They came out in the second, down 1-0 and most have seen something because they rattled of 19 shots that did not get blocked & scored twice. The beavers came back at the end of the period with 5 shots but never really threatened. The third period was back to Beaver dams in the lanes and it was nip and tuck when BSU got another great chance & did not miss. Bona broke through with less than 2 minutes left. It was not the high-energy game UM would prefer but it was entertaining & very well played by both teams. I do not know why the Beavers are in the bottom half of the leauge. Do they save this for UM?

Don't most teams?
(thanks for the game summary, btw)

At least one that shares the last name...

Delusional...Yes...However I like the fact that you did use CN humor on Williamson and then were asked if you were going to use it on her.
Kippin Keller counted to infinity, twice!

I was compelled as she's having a pretty nice tournament...eh? ;)

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Weak opening ten minutes today followed by better play for most of the rest of the first. It was a dominant second period and a very nice third period until Milica McMillen took an incredibly dumb and unnecessary penalty for cross-checking a Beaver in the face in the offensive zone with a one goal lead. It was an inexcusable play. Overall, I think she has improved and making fewer stupid, lazy plays but she still commits too many of these. It's moments like these (along with Lee Stecklein's consistent stellar play) that prevent me from anointing her as the best defenseman on the team despite her obvious and plentiful talents.

Regardless, it was worth spending seven hours in a car to watch a two hour hockey game.

Does anyone know why Minnesota was able to play 35 regular session games? Max per NCAA is 34...

Hockey Hall of Fame game is allowed as an extra game. November 24 v. Saint Cloud at a neutral site.

Todays game was almost a carbon copy of yesterdays. As eeyore noted the major difference was #13 decision that pretty average interference by a D against the puck carrier entering the zone was unbearable & cross-checked the D in the chin. It made no sense and got the 5 + it deserved. I think had she kept the stick down it would have been ignored like the interference was. I have no idea what she was thinking, maybe the stick just came up but it was inexcusable as it's the sort of thing that could really cause a serious injury & there is no good excuse. MN got the empty netter today as about the only other difference. As much as I don't like the "Beaver dam" defense of slow play with clogged lanes I really admire BSUs ability to play that game as well as I have ever seen it done.

Congrats to #20 Megan Lawrence on her 100th point as a Gopher, for a player that has never been on the top line & didn't get much ice early on in her career that 100 is more impressive than more gaudy numbers put up by many 1st line stars. Also, so long to Stephanie Anderson a senior who as been outstanding for the Beavers and was recently named to the national team; the lady has speed.

Thought she was a junior? With the transfer I've lost track really but it seems like she should have a year left. Or time has flown by faster than I'm conscious of.

You are correct; BSU's #16 is a redshirt junior.

I heard some Bemidji people up there talking & they were saying she was out of eligibility, I thought maybe she lost a year in the transfer. Oh well, thats what I get for listening to skuttlebutt at an ice arena!

She had to sit out a year but it didn't count against her eligibility.

I can answer your question, yes, and they are not the only ones.
I was in Duluth this weekend and decided to catch the UMD-OSU games.
It was hard to tell that these two teams were the ones that played at Ridder. The first period Friday especially, I don't know who was sleepier, the Bulldogs, The Buckeyes, or me. Total lack of intensity.
Also, it is obvious that both these teams reputation from playing dirty also is not warranted, they merely apply the time tested strategy of if you can't play up to the other teams talent, bring them down to yours. The Bulldogs & Buckeyes were angels.
Even the crazy kid from BC was a good girl.
Amazing.

It's nice to know that we'll have a ready replacement for delivering a cross-check in a crucial situation once McMillen graduates.

Actually, I hated seeing that. I was even cheering for Edina because of Taylor Williamson coming to UM next year. After that play, I really had trouble rooting for them.

Hopefully, she'll learn from that, or I can give her the benefit of her story that she didn't see the player coming and it was an instinctive hit because of not seeing her.

I did not know that Williamson had a concussion injury during her high school career. This past season if I read correctly. I think I read the target of her crosscheck was involved in that concussion injury as well. Then I read she claims she "didn't see the player coming" when she received the major. It didn't look as though that was true to me. Still don't think it's fair to imply that's behavior we can expect going forward. Those familiar tell me it's 100% unprecedented.

I know this senior tribute was played during the UMD series at the rink, but I haven't seen the link posted previously. Sorry if it was.
