Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Coming next year:

Minnesota
Tianna Gunderson....................F.................... .........(Roseau)....................Roseau, MN

Came out of the blue for me, that's pretty cool! She has 21 goals and 17 assists for Roseau in 20 games. The Lady Rams are 16-3-2. Anybody seen her play or know anything about her?

Anyone curious about Ms. Gunderson that was heading to St. Cloud on Saturday for the Gopher game could make it a double header. Roseau plays St. Cloud at 1:00 at the MAC. Probably have to miss a bit of one game or the other.

Brandt and Cameranesi are pretty productive seeing as their playing the toughest schedule in the country.

Er, no, they're not. They don't have to play Minnesota! Wisconsin (obviously), Cornell, St Lawrence are good teams with clearly tougher schedules.

Both KRACH and RPI disagree with you. The latter has Minnesota with the toughest schedule this year and the former as the second toughest behind Wisconsin. For the Badgers, the SOS is held down because the only two non-conference series they've played are Lindenwood and New Hampshire, so it might change after playing Clarkson this week.

I assumed ww was making a joke about MN not having to play MN. If not a joke then please, proceed.
I admit the math is beyond me but KRACH takes SOS into consideration how do they justify BC as #1 with an SOS @ #16? Does the zero loss thing just toss the whole equation into turmoil or are they somehow beating weaker opponents worse than should be expected?

If it is the zero loss thing then why is Holy Cross and its undefeated season (on the RPI list) tied for #1?

KRACH puts BC above Minnesota despite having a worse SOS for the same reason that it puts Minnesota above Wisconsin despite having a worse SOS, and the same reason it has Minnesota State in 35th despite its 9th-best SOS. We don't rank teams based on how good their opponents are.

Also, KRACH doesn't factor in margin of victory. But it does factor in strength of schedule.

By the way -- you all realize that BC has an above average strength of schedule, right? It's not like they've played Union 20 times. I'm not saying it's great, but it's not exactly an embarrassment. BC's out of conference opponents have been quite good.

Playing Union 20 times... Isn't that the equivalent of playing in the Hockey East? :)

Wrong! KRACH puts UM above UW because of a better record & a 3-0-1 record against UW. MSU-M is 35th because they have not beaten anyone other than Lindenwood - although they did give #10 SLU a scare. My understanding is that KRACH was designed to factor in SOS so a 16 SOS with no loss is better than a 2 SOS with a single loss because . . . ?

And yeah, 16 is less than half of 39 but not by much!

I'm not sure exactly how the KRACH and RPI SOS figures are calculated, though I'm sure it's reasonable. I was going simply off the OPWP, which admittedly is cruder. Even so, I don't understand how a team that has to play both Minnesota and Wisconsin could have a weaker SOS than a team (like Minnesota and Wisconsin themselves) that only has to play one of them.

The answer is in the non-conference schedule, along with the fact that Minnesota has played four games against Wisconsin, while teams like Bemidji and Ohio State have played only four games against Minnesota and Wisconsin. So some of that will change as the WCHA rolls through the second half, but some of it will only change if the various non-conference teams start looking better or worse as the season wears on.

Minnesota played seven non-conference games. Five of them were against TUCs (2xPrinceton; 2xSLU; 1xBU) and a sixth was against a Penn State team that just barely misses being a TUC. The seventh was against a weak St. Cloud.

Bemidji has played six non-conference games. None of them were against TUCs, or even teams that are close to it (2xLindenwood; 2x Robert Morris; 1xRPI; 1xVermont) and Vermont is the only one that even comes in stronger than St. Cloud. That's a big gap in quality to make up in conference play.

Ohio State's non-conference slate is a bit better (2xPenn State; 2xNew Hampshire; 1xMercyhurst; 1xRobert Morris) but still not in the same ballpark.
