2013 WCHA Final Five: end of hockey's great tournament

North Dakota fans proved that the Final Five could be successful without Minnesota there. The NCHC will do just fine.

That's not a direct comparison because it doesn't account for all the mn fans who attended because it's what they do every year and those who bought tickets and sold/gave them away at a substantial discount.

While the combined paid attendance may increase slightly with two venues in the future, both tournaments are going to struggle to break 10k next year in average attendance.

The Final Five? You mean they're still holding this thing? And here I thought it died out 10 or 15 years ago...

Nothing can top last years' game for sheer awesomeness though, as I'm sure all Gophers would agree.

As painful as that was to watch, it was also remarkable to see UND storm back in such a strong fashion. I still want to know what Hak said to the team in that timeout.

Don't worry biddy and Dirty, once the light rail from St. Paul to Minneapolis is done, we can all continue to tailgate in St. Paul and you guys can just hop on the train over to that basketball arena in Minneapolis.

Basketball arena? Surely people know better than to play hockey in a basketball arena. That's just crazy.

He either promised the UND players to smile if they won or give them the finger if they lost.

Even worse than playing hockey in a basketball arena-desecrating a hockey arena with a fake floor on the ice and a bouncy ball!

You got it backwards... he threatened to smile if they lost, so understandably they made sure that didn't happen.

Maybe in years that UND isnt up to it's usual standard and in Detorit, but I think attendance wise B1G with MN there will draw big if there are reasonable prices, but the 2011 Final Five had 12,000+ North Dakota fans alone.

Re: 2013 WCHA Final Five: end of hockey's great tournament

I figured the last year of the WCHA tournament as we know it (and regardless of your opinion, surely this tournament becomes much less prestigious next year) was a good year to check it out. Hopefully, I'll get to see my team play at least one game there. I wonder if they'll have good nachos.

No it didn't. Still plenty on non-UND fans, most of who will have little reason to go to the NCHC tournament.

Both tournaments will struggle to average 10k per game. Just not enough fans for anymore than that.

Re: 2013 WCHA Final Five: end of hockey's great tournament

Not sure...are there just 10 teams that play into the tourney? That leaves home teams looking like:

St Cloud
Minnesota
North Dakota
Minnesota St
Wisconsin
