2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

When we fired Nedley, raise your hand if you thought he'd get to this stage before us - if ever.

Hated him (in a sports context) by the end of his tenure in Milwaukee, but hoping he wins it all now.

EDIT: And don't get me wrong... he was a good manager for the Brewers when our young core was coming up, but he didn't seem to be able to manage a team that was actually a contender. Too many of his in-game decisions drove me (and many others) absolutely nuts.

I completely agree. I was actually torn on of I should root for him or not. In the end I did, but if it was closer to his Brewer time I would not have.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Well if it makes you feel any better he committed some pretty crucial mistakes imo that cost KC the series.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

So, Brewers have exercised mutual option on 3B Aramis Ramirez for $14 million and he has three days to accept or decline.
They also exercised $13 million option on RHP Yovani Gallardo and declined $14.5 million option on 2B Rickie Weeks. (as noted earlier)

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

I'm okay with those decisions.

Also heard that a few guys declared their intentions to be FA. Does anyone know who they are? A quick search didn't yield anything on my drive home. I assume our first basemen duo, who else?

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

@Brewers: LHP Zach Duke, LHP Tom Gorzelanny, 1B Lyle Overbay, 1B/3B Mark Reynolds and RHP Francisco Rodriguez became free agents yesterday (10/30).

The only one out of that group I would rather not see back is Reynolds. Duke seemed to be an effective LHP out of the 'pen and K-Rod still had decent stuff last year. Perhaps they've pitched themselves out of our price range. I'll always have a soft spot for Lyle "O"verbay.

Well guys, 1B might not be such a black hole next year, Brewers have traded Marco Estrada to Toronto for Adam Lind. I like it!

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

I like it, as long as Lind stays healthy. Estrada was not great last season and once the bullpen is back to full strength, he's replaceable.

I agree. Think of how many opposing homers won't be leaving the park next season! Imagine how many Estrada would have ended up with last year if he hadn't been yanked out of the rotation. Lind seems like a decent 1B if he can stay healthy even if he's only here for 2 years at most.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Not saying the replacements are better but...

Estrada - 29 HR
Rodriguez - 14 HR
Duke - 3 HR
Gorzelanny - 1 HR (0.86 ERA , 21 IP)

Oh, and since Baseball Reference lists him as a relief pitcher ;)
Overbay - 0 HR (0.1 IP)

And the pitching staffs HR/9 ranking from Baseball Reference:
1 Francisco Rodriguez 1.9
2 Marco Estrada 1.7
3 Brandon Kintzler 1.2
4 Wily Peralta 1.0
5 Kyle Lohse 1.0
6 Yovani Gallardo 1.0
7 Mike Fiers 0.9
8 Jimmy Nelson 0.8
9 Will Smith 0.8
10 Matt Garza 0.7
11 Zach Duke* 0.5

HR against is misleading. If you give up 28 solo HR a year, it's likely not that bad.

It seems like that's often what K-Rod does. The meaningless solo HR in the 9th.

Hopefully they can figure something out as far as platooning him. Also guessing his numbers will be closer to 2013 than '14, but like you said this should address what has been a huge weakness for a while now and easily the worst first base tandem in the MLB over the last two seasons (and by fangraphs WAR, the worst tandem of any position over the last 2 seasons).

It seems like that's often what K-Rod does. The meaningless solo HR in the 9th.
Huh? As far as I know they didn't really use K-Rod if they have a huge lead. In which case it would be hard for him to give up a lot of meaningless HRs.

Also I found this interesting about Estrada:

And you’d better believe I’m sitting on a Marco Estrada fun fact. We’ve got split data going back to 2002, and since 2002, 401 pitchers have thrown at least 200 innings with the bases empty and also with the bases not empty. Between the splits, the average pitcher has an FIP 14 points lower with the bases empty. Estrada? 160 points lower. It’s the greatest gap out of the entire pool. With no one on, his career FIP is 3.49, and with someone or someones on, his career FIP is 5.09. Last year, 4.20 and 6.08. When pitching from the stretch, Estrada has generated fewer strikeouts while seeing more walks and dingers.

That’s a bad thing, obviously, because it means he pitches worse in more threatening situations. It’s also something the Blue Jays might feel they could be able to fix, but it’s just another of the issues with a pitcher who might not be worth the hassle. At his best, Estrada looks something like a No. 3 or a No. 4 starter, but the Jays have to figure out if they want to pay this guy upwards of $4 million. That’s a decision they don’t have to make for a handful of weeks.

HR against is misleading. If you give up 28 solo HR a year, it's likely not that bad.
That's why he showed the rate stat after the totals. And unless you can show that a pitcher is less likely to give up a HR with people on base than without (Estrada being the exact opposite), then I'm not sure how that would be misleading.

Me too. He hits righties at a .350 clip, and according to Melvin, the NL Central is righty heavy. I'd have him hit against some lefties, but work someone else into the mix as well.

Who said anything about a huge lead? If you're up by 2, and you give up a solo HR before you get the save... it's meaningless.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Aramis Ramirez accepted his option. Glad to have him back. I wasn't happy when they first got him, but he's grown on me the past couple of years.

If anything that just shows why the save is a rather meaningless stat. If you allow a run or two and still get the save then you weren't very effective in that outing. And if you give up a solo HR up two then you just made things a lot more interesting than it needed to be, especially if your command goes to **** like his did and you start walking people.

K-Rod was not good last year. He started off amazing, then ended the year with a 4.5 FIP, 23% of his flyballs left the park, and a negative WAR.

I'm more concerned about Duke leaving. He's actually effective and costs waaaaaaaaaaaaay less.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Zach Duke to sign with the White Sox, per McCalvy on Twitter. Bummer.
