2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

no news is good news, when Papelbon is concerned. Melvin says he has not heard from the Phillies again.
I hear that. The guy is on the decline and it's not like a closer moves this team any closer to contention, not to mention the salary could be better used in other areas.

Mark A. says don't get excited about Shields or Zimmermann - they're not planning on signing a big name starter, but they're definitely looking at closers (obviously).
If that's the case, they're not truly looking to contend this year.

It could be interesting to see what they do at the trade deadline this year. Guys like Ramirez and Lohse could be good sell candidates that help you restock the farm system. I also wonder if selling high on a guy like Gomez would be a smart move, given that he's likely going to command a huge salary after the 2016 season, but will also be 30 and on the decline at that point. I feel like you could get a decent haul for a guy who plays a premium defensive position (very well obviously) and has been a solid bat for a few years now.

One guy I wonder what they will do with is Lucroy. There aren't many great metrics for catchers but from everything I've read he's one of the most underrated in terms of defense and pitch framing etc. Not to mention he can hit. Not sure if catchers are more injury prone though especially into their 30's.

Dang. Yeah you guys will definitely dodge a bullet by foregoing a pursuit of Papelbon. I hate him. He's everything bad about pro athletes. And he is surely beyond his peak. One of many mistakes the Phillies have made since Amaro ascended to the GM spot. I'd trade the guy for a bucket of balls. Or a cup of chicken fries. Or a bottle cap.

And shouldn't there be a 2015 thread now...? :D;)

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Yeah Ruben is a terrible GM, makes Melvin look like a savant :D

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Brewers will Play Lucroy at 1st Base vs lefties with Maldonado behind the plate.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Lind shouldn't be used vs lefties so yeah, gotta do something.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Single game tickets go on sale Feb. 28th.

Rickie Weeks signed with the Mariners (1/$2 mil, plus $2 mil. incentives). Interesting that he was not interested in playing anywhere except second for the Brewers, and now he went to Robinson Cano's team, so obviously he's not playing second.

Lucroy out 4-6 weeks with hammy issue. Hopes to be ready by Opening Day.

No new closers.

And its twitter official, K-Rod and Brewers agree to a 2-year deal. If this is what it took to not trade for Papelbon, I think I'm ok with it, but I don't think K-Rod should be a our closer anymore...idk

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

I agree. Was not pleased with his performance last season, so a two year deal with an optional third makes me a little ill.

On the flip side, I noticed pitchers with the Brewers have every other year cycles of brilliance meaning K-Rod will be due to be lights out this season.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

McCalvy tweeted that Ramirez is retiring after this season.

I'll take K-Rod for 2 years over Papelbon for any. How much are they spending on him?

I read that K-Rod is getting $13 mil guaranteed over the 2 years...I assume that would also include the money he'd get if the club declined the 3rd year club option.

The Brewers' 30 for 30 was on MLBN this week. Mostly middle of the road picks, except for homer Plesac, who felt they would be in wild card contention. As much as Gallardo is not his old self, I liked their chances a lot better with him, just because of the depth. They did say they feel Segura will have a huge year, and had a great year in winter ball.

I thought it was interesting to note that Braun got repeatedly "reminded" yesterday about the new pace of play rules, and said it'll be a big adjustment. He, more than anyone else I notice, steps out of the box every **** time to stretch and takes forever.

No K-Rod in camp yet, due to visa issues in Venezuela.

Who's going to be the Opening Day starter? Garza? Peralta might be an interesting choice.

One month til Opening Day. :)

Step out. Stretch the arms over head with the bat. Put the bat down. Bend over to stretch. Grab a pinch of dirt. Adjust both batting gloves. Breathe out. Step back in. Turn knees toward each other like he's gotta pee. Tap the plate with the bat. Put bat on shoulder.

Repeat after every pitch.

It's annoying, yet hilarious to watch.

It's a pre pitch routine. Everyone has one. His is just a little longer. Without it he wouldn't be mentally prepared. It would be like his body without the juice.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Hellweg and Wang (among others) sent to minor league camp. Wang to the Manatees, Hellweg to Colorado Springs (have to get used to that name :))

The JS has had the position-by-position articles the past week-ish.. they're blocked at work, so I can't link them, but check them out if you need some baseball reading.

and hey, the Brewers finally won a game against a major league team.

Adam Lind will play tomorrow, and Lucroy is cleared for intrasquad minor league games starting tomorrow.

K-Rod's visa is approved and he will be in camp Friday or Saturday at the latest. No word on if he plans to step on a cactus after his arrival. :p

Just in case anyone else felt faint upon hearing about Fiers' shoulder soreness, he says it's minor and he's on track for the regular season.

Two weeks.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Kintzler optioned to Colorado Springs, Chris Perez released.

Last bullpen spot: Thornburg, Blazek, or Wooten

Article about the <a href="http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/tough-choices-loom-for-last-spots-on-brewers-bench-b99469804z1-297902641.html">last decisions to be made before the season</a>

SI had their baseball preview and picked the Brewers fourth.

Just one... more.... week

So we're starting a new thread in a week right? Like "2017 Brewers, Back to Back Champions" since the current thread title was a little clairvoyant... :p :(
