2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Zach Duke to sign with the White Sox, per McCalvy on Twitter. Bummer.
Will Smith better hope his arm is good for 130 appearances next year.

Brewers not making moves just for sake of making moves:

We'll see how it plays out, but so far I'm in agreement to fix the issues that need fixing (ie: first baseman, look for LH power hitter, etc.) instead of just holding a fire-sale of everyone on your roster ala Oakland.

Agreed. even with the Cubs signing Lester, I don't think there needs to be any kind of "reaction signing". I feel like our rotation, as a whole, is pretty solid even if we don't have one guy of Lester's caliber. He can still only pitch every 5 days. Bullpen help is definitely needed, but there's no hurry for that. Getting a real first baseman had to be the biggest concern.

I wish Doug Melvin realized that this team is gonna be battling for 4th in the Central and reacted accordingly. Sometimes you need to go backwards to go forwards.

You want him to sell big leaguers for prospects?

Yes. Though I'm not exactly convinced Melvin would get the right prospects anyhow.

What the hell is with that attitude? Melvin has been awesome for the Brewers. He hasn't always hit on draft picks or prospects in trades but he's done an amazing job with the budget and limitations of the brewers. I don't know what more that you want, he isn't going to hit on everyone.

We led the division for most of last season and bring almost everyone back yet we're supposed to go into full rebuild?

Is there a subject that Trix has any clue on?

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

If Melvin is "amazing" then you have some really low standards :D

This team has been a .500 ball club for a while now and isn't going to get out of that purgatory with a few small moves. The rotation is still below average, the bullpen is as well and it doesn't seem like Melvin knows how to draft a pitcher at this point. The only way they've acquired solid ones is by trading away their entire farm system.

I'll give him credit for some of his trades (Greinke for Segura etc) and he seems to be doing ok with position players but you kinda wonder if this team will ever build a functional rotation through the farm system.

This team was projected to be a .500 ball club.

How'd they end up again?

Would you rather be the Twins? What the hell do you want? Wily Peralta isn't a good pitching prospect? I wish we could be more like the rays when it comes to drafting developing pitchers, but this isn't science...its art. He isn't going to get everything right. He can't go out and sign Lester or throw money at a bat. The team has limitations. We all want more than .500 but I will certainly take that over flirting with 100 losses like the Twins have for the last 5 years.

Name a successful team that built their entire rotation through their farm system.

Well the Twins might be the worst run team in baseball besides the Phillies right now, it's not a tough hurdle to clear.

I'd like to see this team actually think to the future rather than pretending that the current crop of talent is gonna contend anytime soon. It'd also be nice to see this team either trade for the right pitching prospects and/or start drafting better in that category.

You're right that this team has financial constraints but they have more money to spend than the A's or Rays and haven't been as consistently good as either despite spending more money. I think part of being a good GM is seeing the writing on the wall and selling when necessary.

I doubt any team has built their entire rotation through the farm but the Cardinals definitely do a better job of this to name a team.

late edit: I think it's worth mentioning that the Reds don't see themselves as contenders and are looking to the future, hence the trade of Latos and Simon. This is what the Brewers should be doing imo.

All right. Tell me about Gorzelanny, please, since he's apparently a Tiger now.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

I remember him fondly as a crappy starting pitcher for the Chicago Cubs and forgot he was even with the Brewers until seeing you post here asking about him.

Was demoted to the bullpen a few years ago (by the Cubs? Nats maybe?) because he couldn't find the strike zone even if he was using a pitching machine.

Pitched mostly as a long reliever / bullpen guy for the Brewers, used in a pinch as a starter (and did well at first) but started showing signs of the old Gorzelanny toward the end of his contract.

The short answer: Serviceable, eats up innings when needed, but you'll find why even the Cubs didn't want him.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

The Tigers bullpen isn't going to become less bad with him let's put it that way ;)

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Selfishly - I don't want this trade to happen.

Realistically - if trading him while he still has ligaments in his elbow and value to his contract, AND what the Brewers receive back helps shore up the few issues they have, then I understand and respect the trade and wish Yo nothing but the best (except when he plays against the Brewers).

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

I don't think the Brewers are gonna contend with or without him so I like the idea of trading him. Not to mention his peripherals have been declining for a while now. Will be interesting to see what they get in return, hopefully they're looking to the future.
