2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

US 3
Finland 0 Final

Knight with the game winner.

The U.S. will need to play a lot better if they're going to beat the Maple Leafs.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Canada 6 - Russia 1 after two.

If Canada is going to beat Russia then it's a good thing that they are seemingly in the process of doing it convincingly...since their first two goals (Irwin & Spooner) were flukes.

Throw that many pucks at the net and some of them are going to go in. There wasn't anything fluky about that game.

Maybe you're just trying to be politically correct.

Check the replays of the first two goals if you have access to them.

Irwin (shoots?) the puck from the slot, it was a fairly weak shot and might possibly have been meant as a pass to her team mate to the left of the goal...Prugova attempts to poke it away with her stick which would have been the best save selection under the circumstances but makes an amateur mistake and the front half of her blade comes off the ice allowing the puck to slide underneath and past her into the net. Prugova looked like she was shocked and in disbelief.

Very nice play to set up Spooner's goal but Spooner's shot hit Prugova in the left upper chest as she was guarding the post...that should have been that. But the puck climbed up her body, like it had legs, onto her left shoulder and over and dropped into the net behind Prugova as she was still quite tight to the post.

Two flukey goals that Canada was fortunate to get.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Rest assured based on quotes from the IIHF president ?. Hate to be cynical here, but this is more of a propaganda stunt while he has a forum at the worlds, the signature event for his sport. This is not unlike Rogge using his event as a platform to make his views known in Vancouver in 2010.

Having said that, he is clearly making good points about making further investments to move the yard sticks. Unfortunately the results at this years Worlds don't really show any closing of the gap between the top two and the rest. The only promise I see is that you see more nations jockeying for spots 3 and 4, as evidenced by Switzerland last year and Germany and Russia this year. It would be really good for the sport if Russia can win a medal, even if it is Bronze, this year and more importantly next year. Having a major country like Russia support the cause is probably better ammunition to keep the sport in the Olympics, than having the IIHF president tooting the sports horn at the Worlds.

While I agree with your assessment of the two goals, in that more often than not those shots would not go in, if you shoot and crash the net that frequently, sooner or later the goalie is going to make a mistake. Let's face it. Agosta was WIDE OPEN beside the net on that first goal leading the goalie to make the attempt she did. IMHO it was a mistake, but that can be debated. Put the Paddle down and try to keep it shut, rather than a swipe. That first goal was a classic example of, just get it on the net, and good things can happen.

This is why I said that she made the right save selection under the circumstances. By taking an offensive action she was preempting the threat that Agosta was posing at the side of the crease as well as nullifying the shot? from Irwin. If Prugova had done as you suggest then Agosta would have still been right there to jump on the puck after it came off of Prugova's blade.

The only problem is that Prugova didn't execute it properly.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

So, by not starting their #1 goaltender against Canada, and saving her for the next game as Rod Black and Cheryl Pounder contended during the game, did Team Russia's coaching staff make a smart move or did they send the absolute wrong signal to their players?

Dunno...Switzerland did the same thing against Canada.

Suspect the main goals for Russia coming into this tournament included three steps.....

1 - Get out of the B-pool into the Quarters.
2 - Win Quarter to get to the Semi's
3 - Win a medal

If they can beat the Fin's tonight, it would be a success beyond most peoples expectations.

Did everyone already forget US 4, Finland 2 in the round-robin?

Shots were 42-13 in that game. Overall Finland scored five goals in six games and didn't really look like a team that was ready to do anything more than put an occasional scare into the U.S. and Canada. There's nothing new in that; a game in which the margin of victory stays close despite lopsided play is not evidence that the gap is closing.

That was:
1 - USA up 4-0 early and falling asleep
2 - Lop Sided shot count with a great tender in net for the losing team.

Both Finland and Sweden have occasionally managed close games with Canada and USA before.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Canada 1 - USA 0 after one.

Replay looked like Birchard's rocket got deflected by the US defenceman.

Unbelievably weak call on J-Rock and close to as weak a call on Duggan even though she was marginally guilty.

Nice hacking by Bozek.

Entertaining first period.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Decker evens the score at one apiece.
