2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Certainly not hoping for a repeat of the first US vs Canada game last year...the big blow out...the Canadian snooze fest.

Watch what you don't hope for...kind of a blueprint of the first period in last year's first game. US flying and Canada looking tight...bad passes and Szabados should have had the first one...was off her post...amateur mistake.

Looks like a good crowd.

2-0 US after one.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

U.S. getting into penalty trouble in the second period. So far they've been able to kill them off, including over a minute when Canada had a 5 on 3.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Don't understand Vaillancourt being Canada's third shooter when you've got Johnston and Spooner on the bench.

And I think it was quite unfair to allow the US to play 7 skaters for the first two periods.

Vetter made some tremendous saves...she's still on her game. Szabados got better as the game progressed but started poorly.

Canada has to drop these dozy starts.

How about Poulin ?.

Gotta to admit though. That shootout goal by Wakes was a beauty.

I sat in the corner at the end were all the action was in the third period, six rows from the Glass. What a great game. Last seven or eight minutes was all Canada and they really shortened the Bench.

Overall I'd say this game was a great display of what the Women's game has to offer, and that goes for both teams.

Here is a story I wrote on Norwich University's Lucie Manhartova competing for the Czech Republic, who is making its first-ever appearance in the Elite Division at the Women's Worlds.

http://www.norwichathletics.com/sports/wice/2012-13/releases/Manhartova-Women-s_Worlds_4-1-13

I watched the Czech - Sweden game today in person. Manhartova played well. Great character win by the Czech team. (I was cheering for them). Czech team has some real good young players on their team. Met a fellow USCHO poster at that game and gave him a ride to the US-Canada game. Then Canada won over the US in a shootout. It was a great day for hockey.

Was at the game. First period was kind of sleepy. Szabados was slow getting over to the post, almost cheating to play the pass, and it cost her. She also gave some juicy rebounds. US was full value for the 2-0 early lead. Canada for the most part kept away from the net, and little to no second chances. Game really got going when Apps collided with Lamoureux. Crowd got into it and Canada stepped it up a bit. Third period was all canucks.

Crowd was 11K+. Lower bowl was fairly full. Middle bowl over half full. Smaller crowd in third level. Expect more people in the stands come Thursday onwards, as Ontario Provincials starts, with 3-400 teams in town, including the PW teams.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

The IIHF website has no links to the Women's Championship on the front page and does not list it under Championships (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!). I finally drilled down to the right page and the link is here:
http://www.worldwomen2013.com/en/
for those who want it.

For Harvard fans out there: Sarah Vaillancourt had two assists in the game versus Canada.
Also Harvard related, the Championship was opened by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston (H.'63), The Governor General of Canada. David was an All-American at Harvard '62 and '63. A fan of women's hockey, his middle daughter played at Harvard '90>'92.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

I thought the whole momentum of the game shifted towards Canada when the U.S. took a string of penalties in the second period. This put Canada on the offensive as they gained confidence and continued to control play even when both teams were at full strength. I think it would have been a different game if the second period hadn't turned into a penalty fest. Even though they managed to kill all of them off (in large part due to Vetter) it appeared that they put them on their heels and never were able to recapture the offensive mindset that they displayed in the first period. To me it appeared that several of the players grew fatigued as the game wore on, which on a few occasions appeared to lead to bad turnovers, including the one that resulted in the tying goal.

Credit Canada for being able to turn the game around, but this is a game the U.S. should have won.

Agree with the special teams fatigue.

Turning point was Knight opting to backhand the puck out of the zone when she had half the ice to her left open and could have cleared on the forehand or skated it out. That brain cramp resulted in a defensive zone turnover and led to Canada's first goal and the resulting momentum.

The end of the game was full of such plays. Just before that, Carpenter had possession in the offensive zone, slowed up near the top of the cirlces, and the back pressure caused a turnover and an odd rush the other way. The US never got the puck out of the zone after Vetter had to make a big save. Just get the puck deep. Whenever Canada got into the US zone after that, the Americans' D-zone coverage was so ragged that it was only a matter of time until a goal resulted. At least, there should be a way to improve on that, because far less talented teams can cover people on D.

Yeah, I thought of her but I'm more familiar with Johnston and Spooner's talent on breakaways, especially Spooner's. She was 5-0 against UMD (Harss all five times and twice in one game) on breakaways two years ago. She would have been my choice.

Maybe that's what she was doing because it wasn't a question of being slow, she had lots of time, she just chose to not cover her post with the puck on MLam's stick almost on the goal line to her right thereby giving MLam something to shoot at when she otherwise would have had nothing to shoot atF. And that was that.

Forgot to mention earlier, nice looking arena...really nice.

Excellent article, thanks.

One of the most interesting tidbits was that Plante was not the first...he's the pretender who has a predecessor, and by a wide margin.

Actually held one of the silver medals from the Nagano Games a couple of years afterwards, either Botterill's or Small's. Was a pretty moving experience, especially back then.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Who was in goal for Sweden? Grahn? Martin's not on the roster...wonder why?

Martin got hurt just before the event. This was reported in the IIHF site, and also mentioned to me by one of the College coaches present at yesterday's game.

Those memories are great. Have a picture of one of our daughters and her friend flanking Lori Dupuis with her gold medal from 2002 during a local home coming event shortly after the 2002 Olympics..

Popped her Achilles tendon during a skate on Saturday.

Re: 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Interested in watching last night's game between the US and Canada without having to jump through the Fast Hockey hoops? Here is the complete game video (at the bottom of the page) on the IIHF's recap page of the game.

This is the complete raw feed from TSN, so move the play slider in about a 1/4 to get the game action. No audio until the game action starts.

(Ouch to Martin's injury).

Who's doing the commentating? Are they American commentators?

I expected to hear Rod Black & Cheryl Pounder as was the case last night and the last few years on the TSN broadcasts. They always do an excellent job with Botterill back in the studio for the intermissions.
