2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Gotta love NBC Sports. The Presidents Cup matches are on delayed tape. Guess they're gearing up for the Olympics.

Understandable reaction, but in this case the real culprit is Mother Nature. Tee times for the last round of matches were moved up to try to beat yet another rain storm. I'm guesing the PGA made the call on the earlier start. Turned out to be a great decision. We got through the Sunday matches with little more than the odd sprinkle. On the way back to the car, about 4:00 PM Eastern, it started to rain. By 6:00 PM Eastern, it was pouring.

Could NBC have been more nimble, and started its coverage earlier as well? Perhaps, but you're asking them to do so on less than 24 hours notice. And had they done so, they no doubt would have received complaints from viewers of the pre-empted programs, to say nothing of golf fans who tuned in at Noon, unaware of the time change at Muirfield Village. There was no perfect option, but NBC probably chose the lesser of the evils.

Personally, I've been rained on enough over the last 4 days to keep me satisfied for a long, long time. At least until next Memorial Day.;)

Forwarding info from the local weather guys: While rainy golf at Muirfield Village has certainly been a tradition, this amount of rain in October defied all the odds. According to one report, we had 18 consecutive days of dry weather and mostly mild temperatures immediately prior to the tournament. Another source checked weather records for the last 20 years, and found out that for the dates in question, this was the #1 rainiest year. We're also apparently 3 inches of rain above normal for the month. Unreal.

TSN picked up the live Aussie feed. It could have been done.

Can't disagree. I don't have any special desire to defend NBC. Or, for that matter, to attack it. But telling the fuller story was in order; the main point being that the tape delay wasn't scheduled in advance.

The TSN decision is to be commended; and suggests another alternative for NBC. The singles competition could have been aired live on NBC Sports Network early on, then switched to the main network when 12:00 Noon came around.

Question: Did the Golf Channel air the Sunday morning competition live? Being that I was either en route or at the 16th Green, I actually don't know.

All Sunday coverage was on NBC. The network and the officials were in a bind and made what they thought was the best decision. Just proves you can't beat Mother Nature. :)

Reminds me of the Miracle on Ice. We watched it live on CBC, while the US saw it taped-delayed on ABC.

That's what I thought; thanks for confirming.

Remember that very well. Interestingly enough, I listened to a live broadcast on Canadian radio -- relayed to us by a US radio station.

As for ABC, I regard their decision as less forgivable than the one made this past weekend. In the 1980 format, the entire medal round consisted of only 4 games. Nevertheless, ABC was never going to televise the Friday Afternoon "semi-final," and even the US/USSR match-up didn't cause them to flinch. Are you hockey people crazy? We'd have to pre-empt Hogan's Heroes reruns to show that game!

In fairness, it was a very different time for sports TV. Many Olympic sports were given only Wide World of Sports style coverage, meaning you'd miss large chunks of your particular sport as the program cut away to other events. So the entitlement we now feel to watch live, from beginning to end, simply wasn't part of the Olympic landscape back then. But still. It was US vs. THEM !

I got the movie " Greatest game ever played" as a gift this year. It's a good film, but what's even better is that as one of the extra features on the dvd, is an old 1967 interview with the man himself, Francis Ouimet. And the interviewer is none other than Fred Cusick Former Bruins broadcaster.

If you could get one club for Christmas (price no object) what would it be?

I need a new putter... Odyssey has a new line of Metal X Milled putters coming out with an adjustable weight system... Seems like something to play around with... Then again, with money being no option, why not go with a Scotty Cameron :D

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Got a set of Adams A12's for Christmas. $277 @ Rockbottom Golf.

For this Christmas, may your shots go where you want them and may you always have fun on the course.

And - has anyone played Ko'Olina in Hawaii? Heading that way in July.
