2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

My oldest boy and I played 9 holes after his work at a muni in another county. What a difference between counties! My home county takes care of the courses with tees, greens and fairways are well maintained. This course was questionable. The tee boxes were uneven and looked like my backyard's grass. Ditto for the fairways. Greens had just been top dressed so I can't comment on them.

No hole markers, few distance markers. I'd never been there before and had to guess where the next tee was after putting out.

If it wasn't for $17 for 18 holes (walking), I'd never go back. But you get what you pay for.

On the good side, my iron play is getting better and better. Driver is going out 200+ and pretty straight down the fairway. Now to string a good drive with a good approach with 2 good putts and I'd be near scratch.

Shoot, I can play some pretty nice public courses for about $20, 18 with cart down around my place in Tampa. They're scamming you ;)

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Why golf can be so frustrating:

Played our Blue Course on Tuesday - from the "senior" tees - shot a miserable 101 :(

Played our White Course yesterday - from the "men's" tees - shot an 83 and if not for a PBFU triple-bogey and a couple of missed putts I would have been sub-80.

Playing the White tomorrow - hoping for the same result as yesterday.

But White men's yardage is shorter than Blue's senior. But cripes! your par 5's are looonnngggg. I think I'd be in the triple digits on blue, too! 6,300 is long for me.

The White Course white tees play to 6102, the Blue Course golds are 5918.
To me, the biggest distance issue is the one between my ears. :D For some reason, I seem to play better from the whites on both courses.
And yes, the fives are lengthy, but all but one are straight shots.

I can't read scorecards.

Anyone help with my drives? They're going out 210 or so nice and straight, but they're all low line drives. I'd like some loft

I tee the ball up more towards the middle of my stance because I slice if the ball is more forward.

Should I be happy and not muck around until the off season??

mookie can probably help you, but sounds like you might flatten your swing plane a little?

Or the opposite. :D

What is the loft of your driver? Everyone's swing is different, and sometimes just changing the loft of the driver you play will optimize the trajectory.

Does it appear you are consistently hitting the driver on the center of the clubface? After your teeshot if you look at it right away you can usually tell where you struck the ball. If you're hitting it squarely, I'd be inclined to test a similar model driver, but with a little more loft, to see if it improves. That's a lot easier, and usually more successful, than trying to change your swing or stance, especially if you feel like you are hitting the ball consistently.

Speaking of the Post-Birdie troubles, yesterday I shot an 84 at Plum Creek despite 4 birdies and an eagle. I birdied 11, then doubled 12. I birdied 18 (started the back 9) and then doubled 1. I birdied 2 and then doubled 3. I birdied 5 and then doubled 6. Then, I finished with an eagle on 8, and had the very short (300 from where we play) par-4 9th to finish. I think to myself, okay let's just play it safe and I hit an 8. Crush it, but my draw kicked me into the rough about 125 out (I normally hit an 8 about 150-160). Hit my gap wedge, and disaster...blade it about 20 yards over the green. Try to hit my 58 degree back on, and get way under it...still about 10 yards short of the green. Hit my 58 degree onto the green about 12 feet, and then four putt (ran my first by about 8 feet, then lipped out my second, and got sloppy with the tap-in). Quadruple-Bogey! Needless to say, I was not happy.

Round went like this:
Holes 10-18 (Front 9 for me): Bogey-Birdie-Double-Par-Bogey-Par-Double*-Par-Birdie (+4, 40)
Holes 1-9 (Back 9 for me): Double-Birdie-Double-Bogey-Birdie-Double-Bogey-Eagle-Quad (+8, 44)

* - Hardest Hole on Course (for me)

After the round, my buddy told me, "if it wasn't for the birdies and eagle, you would have shot a 90." To which I replied, "If I would have just made bogey as opposed to double or quad, I would have shot a 76."

Golf is a funny game. :)

Try a different brand/type of ball? I know for whatever reason there are a couple of brands that on my drives go sky high even if they are are not designed to.

Cobra Amp Cell 10.5D

BTW, finding the Web.com playoffs to be much more intriguing than the FedEx playoffs. The pressure on those guys has to be enormous.

the new big 'thing' in drivers is finding the right shaft. and i'm not just talking stiff/regular, but kickpoints and such.

the i-mix really brought this attention to people, where you could experiment and find one that worked. when i got my rbz stage 2 in june i stayed away from the stock model as some peeps that are in the know told me that they are ...um questionable. the options that you have run in the 100s. they didn't offer what i used in the i-mix but peeps who work there gave me names that preformed the same and i went with a 6q3 matrix. so far, so good.

I'm playing a senior shaft.

Got the drives out to 200+. A few were up over and a few were under. But, overall was pleased. Still hitting line drives, but they're straight (slight fade) and 200 or so.

What gets to me is I hit a 210 drive and then push the 2nd shot right into the rough around the green or into the sand. That adds a stroke per hole. Frustrating. But shot a career low 87 from the white tees. Not one triple bogey and only 5 doubles.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I played 9 last week and did it in 1.5 hours, however the 8th hole was to an island par 3, and I shot an 8, then the 9th was a par 4, but shot another 8. Other than those 2 holes I had a great round.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Shot 89 from the tips at Wollaston yesyterday. We won $82.
Applause. Well done sir!!

#1 son and I went to the muni to play 18 today. Want to shoot the starter. He started running groups out there way too quickly. While waiting to tee off on the 8th tee, I counted 5 groups (including us) between the 8th tee and the 9th green. What should have taken 3.5 hours took 5.5 hours. On one hole it took 20 minutes from the time we got to the tee until we hit our 2nd shots on a par 5.

In his defense, it looked like senior citizens day out there. Lots of short hitters.
