2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Well a new season is upon us.

Played 9 holes yesterday @ the muni in a nice stiff breeze. Was going to go around again, but took one look @ the radar and the front was too close to complete another 9.
Double - Birdie - Par - Double - Birdie - Double - Double - Bogie - Bogie

Not a bad day at all. The greens were saturated and you could see the water come up when you walked on them. Made them nice and slow.

My goal is to shoot in the 90's every time I play 18 (I use the senior tees).

Oh - nice article on what some equipment manufacturers think about the USGA. http://ht.ly/hiDH3

Lefty lips out a 25 footer to miss a round of 59 at TPC Scottsdale. Phil wound up with a 60 after also coming up a foot short of a birdie on his second-to-last hole.

I love Phil. Everytime I hit one into the woods, don't get depressed because I remember Phil did one like that the week before.

That putt was a crime. He got robbed.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I hope all/most of the big names have great years. It is so much more fun to watch when the big dogs are on their game. Plus there will more often than not be a no namer in the mix every week, at least going into the weekend, so we still get the underdog card too.

Excited to get back home and hit the course in another week. Not excited that it is still winter pricing at courses in Florida.

Also had a putt come up 8 inches short on the par 5 that he didn't birdie.

The thing that stood out to me was birdies on all four par 3's.

wow great article.
My goal is to shoot sub 80 every time and get my handicap under 10. Right now I three putt way too much and I can't get to the green in two on the longer holes.

As far as equipment and the rules.
Many of the rules suck. Did you see where tiger did not make the cut in Dubai because of a nebulous rule on sand? he took a 2 stroke penalty for no reason, so yes the rules really need to be re written and bi furcation would not be so bad, we have it anyway to a certain extent. Plus... most amateurs do not even know the most basic rules, like not grounding your wedge in the sand before you hit.Or stroke plus distance off the Tee. Who does that?. no one. So we could use some better rules.

However, Taylor Made has an axe to grind, and I am not at all sure that the longer distances today are due to better players, I think mostly it's due to better equipment. I suspect they have some things they want to bring out but can't.

The pro's have so much control over the spin now days, and though they have a lot of club speed, it's the control of the ball that is giving them such low scores, (for instance bubba at last years masters.) The older courses are getting re done or supplanted because people are driving the green too much..( I was looking at a municipal course in Birmingham and it had 2 holes over 600 yards. both par 5.) So no wonder they ask people to play forward. Still there are tons of young guys that drive the ball over 300 routinely.

So I do think the USGA is right to regulate balls to a certain extent, and I'm for eliminating the belly putter, but also a lot to disagree with in there too.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Got to say that after reading the article, I am firmly on the side of Taylor Made and the "For Fun" golfer... The USGA needs to realize that we are the ones who keep the sport going...

On the equipment end of things, just look at baseball... Kids swing metal bats from age 2-22/23... If at that point they are going to pursue a career in baseball, they need to use wood bats... I don't see why golf equipment can't follow that design... It works well in baseball... If you want to pursue a professional career, you accept that you need to learn to use different equipment...

There is a course here that if I play the white tees (Black/Blue/White/Red), I'm hitting driver, FW wood on every 400 yard hole. Not a fast round or much of a fun round, so I mix/match with the Red tees on the longer holes (esp the 170 yard par 3's). Makes it a faster round and a bit more fun.

Even if I hit it 200, I don't hit the 3W much more than 180, so I still can't hit the 400 yard par 4's in 2. Oh well - this year it's mechanics and my short game which needs much improvement -- maybe I can break 90 at least once a month.

HMMM..My worst club is a 3 wood. I usually hit a 3 hybrid instead though it won't go as far. The new sets do not include a 3 hybrid any longer, most have 4 as the longest iron.
I'm definitely not on Taylor made's side but I'm not on the old side either. I just wonder where does it all end, pretty soon we will have 80 year old geezers hitting 280 yards.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Is there anything better than watching the fun at the 16th at TPC Scottsdale? Brings new meaning to "stadium" golf. :D

Might be if NBC wasn't crapping it's signal the past 2+ hours.

Got to go there one year and watch a round at the 16th at a friend's box seats. Quite an interesting way to watch golf. There are so many people at the tournament though that it's a bit much for me.

Nice job Lefty!

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Do you talk Pro Tour golf in this thread? Because Holy Crap, nice 4 rounds by Lefty!!

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

This is a bit old, but true...

1923, Who Was:

1. President of the largest steel company?
2. President of the largest gas company?
3. President of the New York stock Exchange?
4. The greatest wheat speculator?
5. The great Bear of Wall Street?

These men were considered some of the worlds most successful of their day . . .

Now, 90 years later, the history book asks us, if we know what ultimately became of them. . .

The Answers:

1. The president of the largest steel company was
Charles Schwab;
He died a pauper.

2. The president of the largest gas company was
Edward Hopson;
He went insane.

3. The president of the NYSE was Richard Whitney
He was released from prison to die at home.

4. The greatest wheat speculator was Arthur Cooger;
He died abroad, penniless.

5. The Great Bear of Wall Street was Cosabee Livermore,
He committed suicide.

However . . .

in that same year, 1923, the PGA Champion and the winner of the most important golf tournament,
the US Open, was Gene Sarazen.

What became of him?

He played golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95. He was financially secure at the time of his death.

The Moral:

To hell with work. Play golf.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I'm going to borrow that, if you don't mind.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

My sister sent it to me. Go ahead.

So, so true!

Just got the email from our head pro/GM asking if I'm coming back to work at the PSU golf courses this year.

Duh!
