2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Swear to God there are people on the golf.com board saying Tiger wouldn't cheat.

I'm guessing Elin isn't typing those posts. He has no integrity or ethics...he can play golf, and he can cheat in a few disciplines...the indignation of some regarding this is funny, in a a sad way.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

So what exactly did Tiger do wrong?

On 15 yesterday he shot, hit the flag and the ball rolled into the water. Tiger has to drop "as close as possible" to the original spot. However, he dropped about 5 feet behind his original spot - one, he didn't want the ball to roll into his divot and two, as he explained to a reporter after the round, he didn't want to hit the pin again so he wanted to hit from further back. That is the definition of cheating: Trying to gain a competitive advantage by not following the rules. Even if you somehow conclude that he should only be assessed a 2-stroke penalty, he signed an incorrect scorecard. That would be an automatic DQ to any player not named Tiger Woods. How many times have we heard about players DQ'd for signing a scorecard with the wrong score? The Masters says he isn't DQ'd because he was told his score was correct. Are we to assume then that every other player who has been DQ'd has NOT been told his score was correct? And why did someone from the Masters tell Tiger his score was correct? The whole thing just stinks.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Was the 2 stroke penalty assessed after Tiger signed his scorecard? If was assessed after he signed his scorecard, at the time he was signing a scorecard with the "correct" score.

The penalty was assessed today after a viewer reported the rule violation AFTER Masters officials reviewed the video before Tiger signed his card.

Saw a tweet that said Sabres fans have called Bettman asking for a review of Hull's Cup winning goal.

And they did not go back and redo playing partners or tee times because that would have royally screwed things up.

It was laughable to hear the Masters guy on CBS saying they are integrity and fairness are the founding principles for the club. Um...no, they aren't.

Golf IS different than hockey (or football, see: Joe Montana's illogical tweet on this topic). Golf is self policed; the player is also the referee. It is always MY obligation to follow the rules.

And the rules on where the next shot is to be played (following a shot into a hazard), are really clear. This is not arcana, this is basic Rules of Golf.

If Tiger wins, it becomes a travesty of the highest order. It becomes the start of a slippery slope where golf is played with referees instead of self policed.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

No doubt tiger got an advantage from his drop.
However, doesn't the rule say you can drop further away as long as it's within a clubs length? just asking.

If you remember Stacy Lewis had a rules violation about three weeks ago where it was pretty obvious she was seeking an advantage, and was not penalized at all.

in this instance one is to drop "as near as possible".

the drop itself was fine. close enough.
the problem was he got in front of the camera afterwards and admitted to moving "2yds back". he said where he hit was "against the grain" and wanted a BETTER spot from which to play his 4th shot.

this action is no longer "as near as possible".

the reason he wasn't dairy queened is because the rules committee didn't ask the right questions to him before he signed his card for 71 after they vetted the drop in the first case. if they talked to him and asked about the 'as near as possible' and he told them about the grain and whatnot - they would have hit him then and he wouldn't have signed for the 6 on 15 as they would have told him it was now 8.

it all worked.

side benefit is now he'll probably pass on all the post round questions, and we won't have to hear him afterwards.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Regarding Tiger, the way I understood it was, the reason he wasn't DQ'd is because the rules committee made the decision to not penalize him, so they didn't tell him about it prior to signing the card. Whereas if they had decided to that he was to be further penalized he would have been told, so his card was correct. Since they changed their mind, they decided to only give him a 2 stroke penalty. I think that makes sense. For the illegal drop part, mookie is right (obviously ;)), the drop wasn't the problem, it was that he openly said that he took a few extra yards. He should have been penalized for that, its the rules. Maybe he thought he saw yellow paint marking that particular hazzard. :p

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

And on to the more important part.

What an incredible end to the tournament, AGAIN. It never disappoints. Adam Scott was so clutch with those 2 long putts to win it. Not to mention Cabrera knocking it within 2 feet after Scott had just drained the long one to take the lead. Awesome.

Even if there is no benefit, I'd like to see the rules guys decide on one type of putter. Perhaps the longer putters have no benefit, but then why are they switched to when somebody can't putt well with a 'regular' putter. So make them all long or all short but I don't like the difference.

Still, congrats to Scott, he played according to the current rules so not a knock on him personally. As we saw, some guys can't even play by the current rules.

Why do you say that? There are tons of different kinds of putters, if you want to change that rule, why not require everyone to use the minigolf style putter?

I don't see why it matters. If that type of putter is an advantage, then nothing is stopping every golfer from using it.

Great end to the Masters as always. It's the only golf event (Sunday of the Masters) that I look forward to each year and actually make time to watch.

Don't know if I got hooked by the course, the event or the hype, but I'm all in where the other tourneys have little pull on me.

Man, I'd love to just walk Augusta, even if I wasn't allowed to play.

I don't have an issue with the blade/head of the putter as much as the pivot point. To me, the game is a game of hand/eye coordination and as I said, they can all use long ones but changing the method in which the club is swung and the ball is hit is not trivial in my view.

Would Happy Gilmour be ok with everyone of do they need to stand "still" while hitting? The long putters exist because people found it easier to be consistent by reducing the two arm swing...that they are reviewing the use of the longer putters is some confirmation that there is at least a question of consistency.

Could somebody lie down and shoot like a pool player? What about stradling the ball and hitting with a motion away from the body?

In my view, the game is better without that variance in swing mechanics created by significantly different equipment. No issue if you don't agree.

But I'm right!!;)
