2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I don't have an issue with the blade/head of the putter as much as the pivot point. To me, the game is a game of hand/eye coordination and as I said, they can all use long ones but changing the method in which the club is swung and the ball is hit is not trivial in my view.

Would Happy Gilmour be ok with everyone of do they need to stand "still" while hitting? The long putters exist because people found it easier to be consistent by reducing the two arm swing...that they are reviewing the use of the longer putters is some confirmation that there is at least a question of consistency.

Could somebody lie down and shoot like a pool player? What about stradling the ball and hitting with a motion away from the body?

In my view, the game is better without that variance in swing mechanics created by significantly different equipment. No issue if you don't agree.

But I'm right!!;)

And what about the putter that looks like a hockey stick?

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Don't know if I got hooked by the course, the event or the hype, but I'm all in where the other tourneys have little pull on me.

Man, I'd love to just walk Augusta, even if I wasn't allowed to play.

In addition to the annual drama of the tourney I think a big part, at least of those of us on the tundra, is the glimpse of spring/summer. Such a beautiful course and so refreshing to see some color.

My dad had the chance to attend all four days a few years ago, he said while HD TV does justice to the beauty of the course it does not come close to showing the elevation change(s) & the undulations/speed of the greens.

I believe it was Sam Snead that got croquet style putting banned, and I think there's something in the rules about cue shots, too.

I'm surprised you don't have pictures of yourself playing Augusta. Hell, I'll bet the tundrabilly twins have played it.

It's the offseason... for me too. ;)

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

JFC - went out 8-7-6 and 3 putts all over the place. Game settled down to getting on the green in 2 or 3 but was leaving the ball above the hole on greens that have a nice back to front slope. Still have trouble on the downhills.

BUT - parred the B*tch hole that is downhill on the drive, water @ 200 and then uphill dogleg right. Never done that before. Lipped out a birdie on 9 from 35 downhill. So the round has positives. Will do it all over again tomorrow. Thit round of 49 (par 34), but the last 6 holes were good.

Will be going to Orlando in June for the 30th anniversary with She Who Must Be Obeyed. Staying @ the Marriott Grande Vista. Anyone been there and have recommendations for a 90's shooter?

no but I would say, make darn sure you play really early in the morning.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Drizzly day but it cleared up a bit for son #2 and I to head over to the 9 holer for a quick round. My swing had been all messed up (slice, over the top, no distance off the tee, you name it, it was wrong). Spent 45 minutes at the instructional range last week.

Instructor flattened out my swing and got the legs back involved. VOILA! Better distance with all clubs and, low and behold!, the darn shots were going, for the most part, straight down the fairway. I was taking divots on the irons. Got many GIR's.

Dang it was fun!

Now to do it again tomorrow. Let's see if the same thing happens or it was just a lucky day.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Missed some shoulda putts in league this week but still came in two over (nine). Haven't been striking the ball very well so far this year but concentrated on keeping my elbow in and it helped. But who knows--this weekend it will no doubt be something else.

Agreed. My putting really struggled on Monday, but the rest of my game was very good. I shot an 87, of which 40 were putts. It's frustrating having about a 12-15 footer for birdie, then three putting (not to mention my 4 putt from about 50 feet). I blamed it on the greens (recently aerated), but the reality is my speed was way off the whole round. Ultimately, I looked at it as a good round (for me). If I can keep striking the ball well, I will eventually get my putter going. Last year, I was averaging about 33-34 putts/round, so I know I can do it. To add to my optimism, on Tuesday I played 9 and while I shot a 45 (driver was a little off), I was putting significantly better (17 putts). Of course, as you said, no doubt it will be something else that will trip me up next time out.

It's hard to get the speed right with newly aerated greens, though, so don't feel too bad about that. Taking a bogie on a hole where you have a decent chance at a birdie is so frustrating it's hard not to let it affect the rest of your game--even on the next tee.

I also don't deal well with slider putts--those 3 to 5 footers on fast greens with some break. Too careful and the break takes over, but if you give it more speed to take the break out and miss, you are looking at a much longer putt coming back. A matter of confidence I usually do not have with the putter. More practice. More practice. Dang, and I was wanting to do more yard and office work . . .

Maybe that's why I carry my hacker card with pride.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

putting practice at least is free vs paying at the range. I try to go do it twice a week for an hour. It gives me an excuse to go to the golf store too.
edit, Dang! my favorite driving range went out of business this week.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I drove by a golf course this morning (in Cottage Grove, MN, for those interested) with a big flashing sign that said "NOW OPEN FOR THE SEASON!". There were 6-8 inches of snow on the ground, and more snow falling.

It's finally warming up here so I'm wearing shorts for just the third time this spring. But a week from now we'll be trying it up in Phoenix. :)

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Getting ready to head south for rd2 today at Newport CC.

Mookie is embarrassed. He is so bad he is getting 11 shots and his 78/67 yesterday at shelter harbor has him 2 shots out of the lead. :o
