2013 Cycling Thread

Today's stage is a prime example why I don't think Cav will win green, Greipel had him beat if he kept going he could have finished second instead he gives up a little and let Sagan and Kittel pass him and he finishes 4th.

I feel like he's done this his entire career...if you're not first your last I guess when it comes to Cav.

It's why I can't stand Cav and why I refuse to put him on any of my fantasy teams.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Good day for Cannondale today! Tomorrow should be interesting, I hope the Tour isn't over after the stage.

As for Cav, its true he doesn't seem to like to grind it out for 2nds BUT you also have to look at his results from events like the Giro before you can totally cast him off don't you?

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Great day for Cannondale got Sagan 50 green jersey points over Cav Greipel and Kittel.

Schleck makes his move tomorrow right :D

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

How would you feel as one of his teammates, if one you've busted your butt bringing back the break, and then leading him out only to have him quit because he can't finish first. IMO he owes it to those riders to bust his butt to finish the best he can. Otherwise it's a slap in the face to them. For all his talent, I have to think that there is a reason besides money on why Cav keep switching teams and I think that is part of it.

I don't know about that. HTC couldn't find a sponsor and folded so he had no choice. Had HTC found a sponsor I can't imagine he wouldn't have stayed considering that team was an absolute wrecking ball. As for leaving Sky, I can't really blame him for that, either. He's quite possibly the greatest sprinter ever to exist in this world and if a team isn't going to work to feature him it's only logical he finds a team that will. As for his chase for green, I think his priorities have changed since Sagan came onto the scene. He just isn't going to win green if Sagan is in the race. As such, shoots for the stage wins and if he doesn't take one 40th is as good as 2nd. When you're as good as he is I don't think the place matters if it isn't 1st. If green were on the line it would be a different story, but as mentioned....he ain't winning green with Sagan around.

Well, my velogames team is sitting at 55th in the world but my self-proclaimed six-point steal in Kristoff has abandoned which doesn't please me. As for the USCHO league....finally...here we go. Ax 3 Domaines should finally reveal the strength of the Sky Train. I know it's sort of late to mention this, but for those of you in the U.S., the earliest showing of the stage is actually on NBC and not NBCS.

My rough guess? Sky hammers the pace from the get-go, the peloton plows over Pailheres with a fair amount of riders still onboard but most are shelled out the back on early on Domaines. Froome attacks with 1-2 km to go and wins by 30 seconds or so.

One thing this stage (hopefully) reveals is the strength of Purito. The guy is getting no talk whatsoever, but let's face it, he can put in some explosive attacks -- the sort that could isolate Froome. Hopefully someone like him decides to animate things because sitting back and waiting for the last few kms is a death knell. This is, assuming of course, that anyone is even able to attack after Sky cranks away 450W for the first 131km, but I digress...

Is cycling really THAT predictable?!

In certain laughable instances...it can be. Though I should have realized that since Sky didn't have yellow yet that it wouldn't drive the race for the full first 131km.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Le Tour is that predictable.

The Giro, The Vuelta, Tirreno-Adriatico, and especially the cobbles Classics are not.

By the way, that sucked. Also, for what its worth, perfect tactics by Movistar today, just happens that Val isn't as strong as Froome.

Yeah, those tactics are the right way to go. "You don't wait for them to attack you. You....attack them."

Not sure it would make a difference anyway but it's the only shot any team is going to have. Adding to the challenge is the fact there is little doubt Froome and Porte are going to blow the doors off the tts. At least the second one is a mountain tt, though.

My velogames team is now up to 28th in the world. Crazy...

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Well my thinking was that when Nairo attack, Sky had to respect him and chase. Which essentially burned through everyone bar Porte (as I recall even Kennaugh had dropped before they brought him back). That left Val and his excellent sprint against Froome. If Froome has simply waited for 1K there was every likelihood that Val could have used that sprint to hang with him. Or if there is some kind of Spanish alliance, it works even better for Contador.

Even as it was they tactics worked and Valverde sits 3rd, which no one, I expect really expected.

It awesome about your team, I remember a number of Vuelta ago, I was 1 overall for the 1st week, I think I had Bennati (when he was fast) AND Petacchi (when he was fast) and has like 1st and 2nd on every stage. Then Anton crashed out and both sprinters left to prep for worlds...

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Kennaugh's descent off the Col de Pailheres was epic. Porte couldn't keep his wheel.

Underrated, I say, great descending is.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Agreed re the Quintana attack. I actually thought it might work out real well for Saxo as I believed they had Sky outnumbered four to three at the base of Domaines. Then Porte took over and my optimism was swiftly crushed.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

I really thought that Sky might be in trouble today after the big climb Contador had 3 teammates with him, Valverde 1 plus Quintana up the road and Froome just had two but nope same old SKY finish. What the other contenders need to do is launch multiple guys off the front, and make SKY chase and hope they break.

You must be a fan of Lo Squalo, then! He totally fried the Skyborgs computers at least twice this year with attacks on the descents!

If you are Riis, is Kreuziger your protected rider now? He can get UCI points and 'Berto can't.

I really like Kreuziger but it seems as if every year in the tour he has 1 horrible day that kills him.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

I agree, there is always the day that kills him, but if you aren't going to win, and barring something spectacular, they aren't, isn't chasing the UCI point pretty important? I know they had more money from Tinkov and brought in Kreuziger and Roche (and Kreuziger has a win in the Classics and a podium in TdS) but they are still points shy if I recall.

I just checked, they are 13th: http://www.uci.ch/templates/BUILTIN-NOFRAMES/Template3/layout.asp?MenuId=MTYzMzc&LangId=1. Cannondale and GreenEdge will both get points via stage wins, but Saxo just doesn't have many winners...

Wait. Contador's points don't apply this year, either? I knew last year's points didn't count because he was a transfer, but didn't think it was an issue this year. How is this the case, and how the heck did I not know this?
