2013 Cycling Thread

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

That really made the Angliru stage fun to watch. He could have just sat on Horner's wheel the whole time, and hope for something at the last minute. But that's not him.

All true and why I like Lo Squalo. But I don't believe he needed to hope, he just needed to out sprint grandpa and win with bonus seconds, assuming they cause Kenny. Granted Squalo has no acceleration but its better than grandpa's.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

True, but if he just sat on Horner's wheel, they never would have raced it fast enough to catch all the remaining riders from the break, who would have swept up all the time bonuses. Horner had no interest in catching all those guys.

Still, he could have possibly gotten four seconds on him.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Awesomely, Quickstep wins the World Team Time Trial by .8 seconds over Greenedge, reversing the .7 sec deficit that they dealt with at the Tour. So to summarize, stupid event, happy Quickstep and Tony Martin won!

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Watched the Tour of Britain this past week, had never seen it before. Pretty foregone conclusion that whoever won the time trial, if they were on one of the Pro tour teams, was gonna win the whole thing, as the level of competition wasn't as great, not any of the climbs so hard, that they'd be able to put time into him otherwise. And sure enough, Bradley Wiggins won the TT, and the Sky team did enough at the front to eliminate any breakaways.

But fun to watch, typical England, countryside broken up by hedgerows, wet and dreary. But some beautiful scenery, the climb of Honister Pass was exceptional, and the stage through Wales was pretty. Too bad Unisport had to bring in Schlanger and Gogo for the final stage, as the two Brit announcers, Hugh something and Brian Smith, were great to listen to, called a good race. .

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Yeah Britain was good. It was nice to see Dan Martin and Quintana promise to attack and occasionally almost isolate Sir.

Also Tony Martin destroyed the field in the World TT Championship. Sir was 2nd, 2 seconds ahead of Cance, who probably would have gotten silver if he hadn't dropped weight in order to have a go at the RR title.

I'm going with Cance deciding to coast through the back half. Still good enough for third. :)

Hope he can pull off the Worlds, but I suspect he will drag a faster man to the win.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

The World Championships were a pretty exciting finish. Valverde and Costa forced Nibali to chase down J. Rod. Then inexplicably Valverde lets Costa jump up to J. Rod alone. Costa not surprisingly manages to outsprint J. Rod and claims the rainbow jersey. Cance, Sagan and Gilbert were not able to close down the gap after the final big climb of the circuit. Nibali let J. Rod get away on the decent. I love it when Valverde sucks, but bummed for J. Rod. He would have been a far more deserving champ than Costa. Nibali simply got played with.

I think to a certain extent you undersell Nibali here. He is the home-country favorite (and the tifosi care) so he was going to chase everything down and everyone knew that. Plus he needed to be aggressive since he isn't out sprinting anyone. If he doesn't chase, and Purito comes back, Nibs finishes 3rd or 4th. If he chases he might drop someone.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

If Purito had sprinted to the correct finish line, he might have taken the win, he was pulling Costa back. But he let up after crossing the first white line, which wasn't the finish line.

Valverde might have let Costa go because they're teammates on Moviestar. He wasn't gonna chase Rodriguez down himself, because they're both on the Spanish team, but he might have let his other teammate try to have a shot. Feel bad for Rodriguez, his number of second place finishes must be in the double digits, sad sight seeing him crying on the podium, but I like Costa a lot too, so.......................

Thought about that, but don't think so for a number of reasons. #1 its always all about Valverde when your dealing with Valverde, even as far back as his TDF stage win ahead of Mancebo and Armstrong. #2 Starting at the end of October, Costa isn't a teammate anymore. Costa is moving to Lampre.
