2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

And the problem with having it at MSG, as mentioned above, is that there's just not a whole lot of time or incentive for them to have it there. Here's a list of the events at MSG from March and April 2009, that I previously compiled for an eLynah post on this same subject:

3/18 Rangers
3/19 Fleetwood Mac
3/20 Knicks
3/21 Rangers
3/22 Rangers
3/23 Knicks
3/24 Rangers
3/25 Knicks
3/26 Circus
3/27 Circus, Knicks
3/28 Circus, Circus, Circus
3/29 Circus, Circus
3/30 Rangers
3/31 NIT Basketball
4/1 Circus
4/2 NIT Basketball
4/3 Circus, Circus
4/4 Knicks
4/5 Circus, Circus, Circus
4/6 Circus, Circus
4/7 Rangers
4/8 Knicks
4/9 Rangers
4/10 Circus, Circus, Circus
4/11 Circus, Circus, Circus
4/12 Circus, Circus, Circus
4/13 Circus, Circus
4/14 Dave Matthews Band
4/15 Knicks

No. No. You're supposed to free up 2 dates for the ECAC tournament. Fix that, jmh.

If Bobby Mo (in conjunction with Pitt?) can get a bid together for 2013 or 14, Hell Yes the NCAA should go for it. Pittsburgh is an awesome city for nightlife and all sports.

Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago (if they bid), then either KC or Dallas would be my choices.

Pittsburgh... ehhh. Nothing really excites me about Pittsburgh although I will declare my own ignorance as I've never been.

BPH has it nailed. Anyone who criticizes Pittsburgh and hasn't been there can shut up right now. Great city! Now, someone get me a Primanti Bro's sammich!

Maybe a Canadian city would be go to through in the mix. If people want the Canadian teams to enter the NCAA and get into hockey hosting a FF in a major Canadian city could spark interest. Montreal,Toronto,or Vancouver could easily draw a large crowd and be a fun time.

Nashville and Louisville have the potential to also be good times.

Raleigh also hosts an NHL franchise and could be a good venue.

As far as Dallas goes I don't think getting a crowd there would be a problem. Flights are cheap, hotels are cheap, beer is cheap. It has a metro population of over 5 million. The city supports a successful NHL franchise. Drawing a crowd would not be a problem.

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

Bus system isn't that bad.

like an enema isn't bad...:p

need to cross the river to get to the south side. need to get uptown to oakland or shadyside or squirrel hill. need to get out to robinson twp.
ie, need a car.

it's a good 8+ hrs from boston. which isn't all that bad.

i would drive, because i know i'll need a car.

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

You need a car in St. Paul (no mass transit besides bus), and last I checked, that was one of the consensus top FF locations... What's your point?

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

Philly would be nice...Raleigh is nothing special and is in the middle of nowhere.

How about Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles or Phoenix?

Well, Atlanta is barely scraping by and can't fill up the rink for their pro team...

And with them going to Tampa next year, I doubt Miami/FtL would be able to get one.

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

I think that by placing the even in cities like DC and Anaheim, you could argue that the committee isnt interested primarily in getting the event in a hockey-hotbed, but more so in a place that's going to be easy to get to, and have some fun stuff to do near by.

Why not New Orleans?
New Orleans would be intreging if for only the soul fact that it would be funny as heck to see the whole of College Hockey drink Bourban Street dry, a feat that hasn't happened yet in NO during several Superbowls and BCS Bowls as well. ;)

A trip north of the border would be nice, but you're going to need a major Canadian University to throw their weight behind it to get it off of the ground. As of right now, only Simon Fraser is joining the NCAA, and they haven't exactly said anything about starting up a hockey program at the moment. You get a school like UBC in and lacing up skates in the NCAA, then we're talking.

And I do kinda like the idea of Louisville getting in on the action as well. With that new riverfront arena they're building there, they're going to be wanting to put big events there. Its bit of a drive for anybody thats not already in Ohio or Indiana perhaps, but Louisville does have a pretty good airport for those that would fly in. Would probably still need a car while there though, but I would think that there's a good chance some hotels might be smart enough to orginize a few shuttle buses for a few places, like going on the Kentucky Bourban trail perhaps??

Is Dallas an actual bid, or are people just speculating?

I'd rather see it in Houston, myself. I wouldn't call either city a great tourist city, but I think there's more to do in Houston. Early April is a good time to be there, it should be close to the peak of wildflower season. (For the cracks about playing in 90 degree weather, in Houston in early April, the high temps should be in the 70 to 80 degree range. It's a great time of year. I don't think Dallas is much warmer.)

(Of course, Austin and San Antonio would be better still, but San Antonio only really has the Alamodome as a suitable facility as their smaller arena is dimensioned for basketball. Austin has some sort of arena where the Ice Bats play, but I don't know where it is or how big it is.)

Wow, CHFan, you can read minds! I'm reading through this thread and thinking to myself what are some cities with NHL arenas that could fill up for the FF, but would be different from traditional FF sites? Nashville and Releigh were the first to pop-up in my head. Releigh would have no attendance issues, but don't know much about the tourism (nightlife). Nashville would be amazing to visit, but attendance could, but probably won't, provide an issue.

I also agree with having a Canadian FF. I think Montreal is the best possible site in North America for a FF. The only thing is that the NCAA doesn't exist in Canada (yet).

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

I know this is kind of an apples/oranges thing, but there is the International Bowl held in Toronto... I know that bowl games are their own thing without a school backing them, but there is precedence for going north of the boarder at least...

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

Forget north of the border, lets go south of the border. Mexico City for 2014!!!!!!

But seriously, I would like to see Chicago and I think Dallas would be good fit. Of the cities that have apparently put in bids, I like the idea of Pittsburgh, that would probably be a fun trip. No mention yet of Milwaukee, do people think it would be too soon for Milwaukee? I would say no, since apparently some think Denver is in the mix.

I certainly wouldn't argue with a Toronto or Montreal (or Vancouver or Quebec - two other great cities) FF, but the recent passport requirement may make this a non starter. For one, the added expense of $100 per person to get there may cause some people to not go, and also, there are several folks who decide on about a weeks notice - once their team wins the regional (how many Bemidji State fans, out of the 500 that showed up in DC, do you think had advance tickets? How 'bout Vermont or Miami? None of those three schools really had any expectation of making the FF) who won't be able to go since they didn't have a passport, and didn't have time to get one... Personally, I'd have been p!$$ed if BSU made the FF last year, and it was in Toronto, and I couldn't go because I needed a passport and I only had a week to get one, and couldn't.

Re: 2013, '14, '15 Frozen Four Sites

Out of curiosity, has any NCAA Championship ever been decided/played outside the US?

My votes are:
2010 - Detroit, MI
2011 - St. Paul, MN
2012 - St. Pete, FL

2013 - Pittsburgh, PA
2014 - Boston, MA
2015 - Chicago, IL
2016 - NYC, NY

If Canada is an option:
2010 - Detroit, MI
2011 - St. Paul, MN
2012 - St. Pete, FL

2013 - Pittsburgh, PA
2014 - Montreal, QC
2015 - Chicago, IL
2016 - Boston, MA
