2012 Women's Worlds

Re: 2012 Women's Worlds

And Northeastern carries Switzerland onward. 2 wins in 2 games for Schelling and another goal for Marty. Would be nice to see them make the medal round.

Re: 2012 Women's Worlds

Can 14 - Rus 1 Final.

If nothing else hopefully this game served to act as a confidence builder for Team Canada as they worked on their offence. Not so much work for the defence and goaltender. Passing and skating looked better than the first two games but then the Russians tend not to play as a team...seem more like 5 individuals out on the ice at the same time who just happen to be wearing the same jerseys.

Anyone know how much time Team Canada's players have had together to prepare for this tournament? Couple weeks?

Re: 2012 Women's Worlds

Nice to see them get some goals and hopefully more confidence going forward. The game got a little feisty and physical in the last 10 minutes, kinda cool seeing the girls throw their weight around and showing some emotion!

Nice to see the team throw their weight around in the last 10 minutes of a 14 to 1 game?

It doesn't sound like they have running time for these events?

Re: 2012 Women's Worlds

Sounds like Canada has gotten things corrected! Impressive win today against Russia, as was the USA's 11-0 win over Finland. Cannot wait for those Medal Games Saturday.

Re: 2012 Women's Worlds

So we've already covered the Canada-Russia game, though here's a link to the IIHF recap.

As previously mentioned, Switzerland defeated Sweden, 3-2, with Swiss goaltender Florence Schelling making 47 saves. The win gives Switzerland the top seed in Pool B and a quarterfinal pairing against Russia.

In the other Pool B matchup, Slovakia knocked off Germany, 4-2. That knocked Germany out of the playoff round, and they'll have to play Slovakia at least twice more in the relegation round instead. That best-of-three series begins tomorrow at 5 p.m. ET at Cairns Arena.

Switching back to Pool A, the Canada-Russia game was not the only blowout as the USA scored 6 second-period goals to cruise to a 11-0 win over Finland (IIHF story). Here's the link to the USA Hockey recap of the game that saw Kelli Stack and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls each score 3 goals and 3 assists.

So in tomorrow's quarterfinals, it will be Russia vs. Switzerland at 3 p.m. ET and Finland vs. Sweden at 7 p.m. ET at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The USA and Canada get byes to Friday's semifinals.

Nope, not in IIHF championship events. Not that long ago there was a game with some outrageous score involving Bulgaria. If memory serves correctly the final score was 72-0. And I'm not kidding on the score, it was an IIHF sanctioned game.

Re: 2012 Women's Worlds

Does Team USA need a goalie when playing some of these teams? They won last night 11-0 and gave up 9 shots. Just a thought. Could Findland beat the Gophers? If no, could they beat the top U19 in the US or Canada?

Re: 2012 Women's Worlds

Ohio native and Boston College alum Kelli Stack netted a hat trick and six points in Team USA's 11-0 defeat of Finland.

Re: 2012 Women's Worlds

Patty Kaz finalist Florence Schelling turned aside 47 shots enroute to a 3-2 upset of Sweden.

Re: 2012 Women's Worlds

Taking a feed from Kendall Coyne, the fleet and shifty Amanda Kessel threaded her way through the Finnish defense before scoring the 10th US goal.

Re: 2012 Women's Worlds

Netminder Brianne McLaughlin spied Amanda Kessel streaking through the neutral zone and hit her with a pass that led to a breakaway. While Kessel's shot was turned aside, the big fat juicy rebound landed at Brianna Decker's feet, and was quickly deposited in the back of the net.
