2012 Presidential Election Part 4

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part 4

You're right that it's surely very tricky. What I suspect could potentially be the one big liability is his massaging the polls based on past performance without accounting for differences in underlying fundamentals (which might, on the other hand, be picked up on simply by straight polling). For example, differences in "the mood" based on ethereal hopey-changey mumbo jumbo and/or the absence of the same. Can he measure depressed turnout among those whose mortgages weren't, after all, paid off by Obama as an expected personal favor? I doubt it. At least not accurately.
Another point, polls are by nature somewhat inaccurate because some people lie. Terrible I tell you, terrible. Still, I don't think Silver has an axe to grind.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part 4

I live in the Merrimack Valley but many of my family, friends, of all political leanings are from suffolk county. Didn't hear a lot of *****ing about Governor Romney there. Turning a 3 billion deficit into a 2 billion surplus, what a terrible governor he was!

Also, a 20 minute drive on 93 gets me to Boston. I'm not out in the Berkshires.

From what I know your info is a bit of a stretch. The numbers were not 3 billion and 2 billion respectively, but I believe closer to $650m each. With a solidly Dem legislature and the 2007 bubble that popped soon after Romney left, perhaps there's a bit too much credit being given here. Lastly, the times I did drive from Boston north...I never got close to Merrimack Valley in 20. But whatever, it doesn't change the fact that Mass voters know Mitt and they largely don't approve.

Silver apparently got into political forecasting because he was an online poker player and got ticked off at Congress for making it illegal.

This election is interesting also in that it's the first time negative campaigning was too successful. Obama did such a great job of convincing the people last spring that Romney is a pure evil sub-human vampire that when he successfully created the simple illusion of being able to tolerate sunlight, it created an unlikely surge of support that still continues. If Obama had been honest from the beginning ("My opponent is an honorable man who I fundamentally disagree with") without all the accusations of eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil bloodsucking, axe murdering, and whatnot, Romney never would have come anywhere close to being equally popular to the prez. So in a way the Romney candidacy is Obama's own baby.

Now that NYC has been wiped out for at least a week, I wonder what the chances of the state going red are...

Romney only convinced people that he could tolerate sunlight by lying. If Romney wins it will permanently change the electorate to a lemming culture that will believe anything these idiots tell us.

I keep hearing talk about the election date being delayed. It's just talk that I've come across, but I'm not sure if that's even legal when involving elections for federal offices.

We still had the election during the Civil War. I don't see how some weather can postpone it.

It would be a political disaster for anyone who legitimately proposed such a move. Its the fabrication of a rumor that will never occur with the purpose of getting to an easily excitable conservative base that will be the only political maneuver here.

Wonderful people these Republicans are. As long as you have a flag or a cross on your lapel though, it's clear that you are someone who loves America and who has "Christian" values.

Yes, let's privatize disaster relief. Let's make it for profit.

Or, as Cantor and Ryan would want it, let's just cut FEMA's funding.

Of course, Romney has backtracked to some degree on what he said at that debate, but his lies are okay because they're Republican lies.

Here’s what the Republican candidate had to say when asked whether FEMA should be shut down:

“Absolutely. Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better. Instead of thinking, in the federal budget, what we should cut, we should ask the opposite question, what should we keep?”

When moderator, John King, responded “Including disaster relief, though?”, Mitt Romney had this to say—

“We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids.It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we’ll all be dead and gone before it’s paid off. It makes no sense at all.

While it’s swell that Governor Romney is concerned about the future of our kids, at this very moment —as the densely populated Northeastern section of the USA is experiencing a catastrophic disaster at a result of Hurricane Sandy—I can tell you that millions of people in the line of this extraordinary and unprecedented storm are also very much concerned for their children.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part 4

Actually, Governor Christie has this wrong as his fellow Republican, House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor—a man who never met a disaster that he much cared about because he has never met one where his own constituents were in serious distress—required offsets before he would agree to help out the stricken people of Joplin, Missouri.

Nice article,Gurtholfin. Is it wrong for me to want Eric Cantor to fight tooth and nail to prevent New Jersey from getting any federal relief? Serves them right.

And here's Romney channeling his inner flip-flop.

“Gov. Romney believes that states should be in charge of emergency management in responding to storms and other natural disasters in their jurisdictions,” Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said in a statement. “As the first responders, states are in the best position to aid affected individuals and communities, and to direct resources and assistance to where they are needed most. This includes help from the federal government and FEMA,” he added.

What a snake. He wants FEMA abolished. He's on record wanting it abolished. Don't backtrack now.

and this will be different how, exactly? :p

Expecting my mortgage to be paid off any day now.

According to the Constitution, the date of election is set in stone. Of course, when was the last time an administration actually followed the Constitution?

True. These days everything is in play. The end justifies the means.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part 4

Nobody died because of Romney's "lies." Not only did four Americans die in Benghazi, there is accumulating evidence that His Liarness could have provided assistance, but didn't.

First off, let's hear someone other than the right-wing blogosphere report on this.

What assistance. Invade?

You know as well as anyone that Presidents have to make uncomfortable decisions when it comes to situations like this. They have to weigh much more than a few American lives in a foreign country. Every President, whether Democrat or Republican must deal with this - part of the job.

They can't afford to be arm-chair generals like you or I can. If it's me, we send every available asset and level a six block radius, **** the torpedos, to protect our own. Presidents and military leaders have to be more measured in their approach. Imagine how gut-wrenching making those decisions must be, knowing that you could try to help, but can't.

I'm sure that even your boy Bush had an uncomfortable decision or two that he had to make.

Quit acting as if this type of decision or outcome is exclusive to Obama. Grow up.

I know you only have to go 10 feet to find something resembling your opinion, but seriously, you don't always have to stop there. What we have been telling you is that the guards were told to stand down. General Petraeus (head of the CIA) has reported that he did not give that order. Assuming that's true, then it falls to either the State Department or the President. No one here was talking about extra troops. We were talking about the troops that were already at that embassy. I realise you're trying to help your messiah dictator in the cover-up, but it isn't working.
