Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

So the next discussion now that the election is over is the fiscal cliff on 12/31?

Everyone's taxes go up if nothing gets done.

Although I guess if you believe the world will end 12/21, there is no need to worry about it. :D

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

What are you talking about? Being able to disagree about policy without demonizing the person with whom you disagree is essential for progress in any organization. Making trade-offs to promote the greater common good is not "submission"; it is adulthood.
When the vote is this close no one wiped anyone's arse. Just sayin'
We do need to avoid thinking that every trend is a mega-trend. Winning 2% more votes or fewer votes does not really point to a demographic sea change, or an emerging generation-long majority.
These are all points worth repeating.

Didn't he just turn 35?
I think this may have been referring to Jindal or Rubio; both of them are 41.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

I think the most entertaining part of today is how shocked the Republican Party and it's followers are that this happened.

Remember, Laura Ingraham said, "“If you can't beat Barack Obama with this record, then shut down the party.”

I have to agree.

It's no different in how shocked the Minnesota Republicans are that they got swept out of the House and Senate after spending two years on amending the State Constitution. Stop wasting our time, thanks.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

...
I think Flag wants a real Libertarian party...not Ron Paul's Party of Stupidity. You know all those moderate Republicans who have been primaried out by Tea Partiers...those people would form the party. that is what I want anyways...a fiscally conservative party that isnt going to just pay off its donors with massive tax cuts and leaves social issues alone.

As I said though it will never happen.

Responsible for a balanced budget? Leaves social/personal issues out of Gov't? I'm heavily Dem, but I'd vote for that party every election. Twice if I'm still near Chicago.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

So which hurts more...being completely wrong about Health Care or completely wrong about the election and your hero Mitt Romney? ;)

hmm...selective editing of your memory??

I never once said that PPACA would be overturned, I was very (deliberately) careful throughout to limit my comments to saying that the mandate would be found unconstitutional (I had a sneaking suspicion that they might find a way to back-door the law under the taxing power). The mandate was found unconstitutional, yet JR also did allow the law to stand....under the taxing power as an alternate theory!

Also, I was not "wrong" about the election as to whom I expected to win: there is a difference between emotion and reason you know (or perhaps, being a progressive, you are unable to distinguish between the two?? ) I supported Romney as a candidate because I totally discounted everything either party or candidate said and I looked solely at the records. I fully expected Obama to win anyway. "Hope for the best and prepare for the worst."

Just like in sports: I can both want my team to win and also pick against them if there is money on the line.

Go ahead and gloat. Your candidate won, so what if the ship is sinking, at least it's your captain at the helm, blaming others for the disaster as all of us together dip below the waves.....

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

C'mon Fishy, I'm sure we can scare up footage of election night 1980 if it'll cheer you up!

I do really want to see your take on this though. You are the pioneer out here of "heads GOP wins, tails Dems lose" as evidenced by your comments after the Health Care ruling. So tell us, how is last night's loss really in fact a win for the GOP?

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Last night made me sick to my stomach. It is sad to see how stupid the country has gotten. I'm embarrassed to share a state and country with these liberal pieces of ****.

I was about to say that I'm in your state, and I'm a conservative; and my two "No" votes helped defeat those constitutional amendments (those amendments were about as far away from conservative as you can get; substantively, philosophically, even procedurally) -- so you got some re-thinking to do, my friend. But later you added:

Nothing would make me happier than dropping all of the social conservative bull****. I hate it, it drags the whole party down and does absolutely no good whatsoever. I'm about as ****ed as I can be about this election, but don't mistake that for me being social conservative, I think they're one of the bigger parts of the problem.

So never mind. You must've meant something else.

Rover,

Seems fair :p

You're right that we need true Libertarian values, and it needs to be a replacement of the GOP, similar to what happened when the Whigs died out. However, I think it would consist of Santelli TEA party candidates, not the GOP let's-hijack-a-term-to-create-some-excitement tea party. I think the TEA party had a chance to have some staying power, but it lacked two things:

1. Disestablishment of the GOP;
2. Follow-through on the clear and concise message.

#2 is MUCH more important than #1. That is how candidates endorsed by a minority party in an area win elections; it's something I learned when volunteering with Tutunjian's campaign in Troy NY. When the people don't see true leadership, they'll vote for whomever steps up to their party line's mic.

If the Libertarians, or Conservatives, or whatever party looking to replace the GOP wants to win, they need a clear and concise message, and they need to have a consistent follow-through on that in order to continue getting elected.

Thank you for proving the point I made in reply to the person to whom you replied.

Who is this Laura Ingraham? Minnesota House Rep? Fox News contributor? (my two best guesses :p)

In that regard, this election was the best possible thing that could have happened to the Republican Party. This election was first and foremost an unquestionable rejection of the Tea Party. Multiple high profile Tea Party candidates who had primaried out a moderate Republican lost - to the Democrats. The RINOs now have a concrete reason to grab the Tea Party by the neck, rub their nose in the dog poop, say "See what happened? THAT'S YOUR FAULT," toss them to the curb, and re-tool as a socially moderate fiscal discipline party.

Republicans can now actually compromise and get things done without having to fear being labeled RINOs and getting primaried. The name Tea Party is now a laughingstock.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

South strategy loses. I've been to the south, everyone is black or brown with old dying whites. We saw how those numbers went yesterday.

Yup.
Look at the exit data demographics that show the most pronounced separation...it wasn't terrorism, religion, the wars or the economy.

She's a talk show host that typically works alternative conservative talk radio (aka not the station that typically runs the wallbanger and golfer [Hannity and Rush]). She contributes to Fox snooze once in a while, too.

I fear instead it will be "Romney should have come out stronger against gay marriage". And "Romney should have been stronger against illegal immigration".

We'll see. There are plenty of conservative bloggers saying today that the election was lost because they weren't conservative enough.

Wonder how Santorum would've played on the national stage. Gotta think he would have been skewered on the social issues but I'm sure that many of these conservative bloggers would have greatly preferred him as their candidate.

I like to think that he would have lost by even more, but who knows...

Unfortunately, that could end up being true.

The GOP needs someone who can step up and lead the purge. Christie? After what he did with Obama during the hurricane, if he once and for all tells the Teabaggers to go pound sand and leads the crusade he'll gain mucho brownie points with the people and can set himself up nicely for a 2016 run.

How about, "Romney should have come out with a clear message." Obama called him out on the flip-flopping. In addition, aside from the Denver debate, I don't think Romney actually had a clear message. I think Michael Savage put it bluntly during the primaries: The GOP blew it.

I supported Romney in 2008. Why? His message was clear. It was to the point. It was close to my values at the time.

I have no idea what you are talking about, which is not uncommon. You are so much smarter than me after all.

Whomever they do, they need to keep the old bags away from "training the rookie" and instead let him/her wild. If they're at that level, they obviously know what they're doing.
