Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

It's glorious how they're already discussing why Romney couldn't reach moderates.

Please tell me that I'm not the only one who just heard the Plaxico Burress reference towards Todd Akin?!?!? HILLARIOUS!!!!

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

WOW.
Well maybe comments like were made cost some votes, but if you are the Republicans, maybe you should change how you approach things.
The electorate has changed. IMO for the worse. I repeat a quote I made earlier..

Edward Gibbon (Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire author)
“In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all — security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again.”

BTW congrats on the win. Tell me how we're going to cut the deficit?
I think I'd better start studying Chinese

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Palin being interviewed on Fox. Blames the Bain Capital ads and "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt" for Romney's performance.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Congratulations to President Obama on his re-election

Also to Democrats for increasing their hold of the Senate in a year when that didn't seem possible, let alone likely.

Thank God the good guys held on to the House.

And Florida? Where's Tim Russert when you really need him?

I'm a Republican. But seems to me that what has happened is that the ultra right has gotten control of the party to the extent that it forces all the candidates further right and alienates moderates like me who are on board economically but not socially.

As far as the deficit, hard to say. Obama is going to come up with a package to cut out about 550 billion, but the congress will most likely be more divided so whether it gets anywhere is a problem. The republicans also must be ruing the failure to to capitalize on so many democratic congressional seats up for grabs.
I really hope we have more bi partisanship but I doubt we will.

hats off to the pollsters. they called it close and so far it is. conventional wisdom out the door.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Seems like Obama will get PA to add to WI. IA and OH still out there to be had though.

IA at 26% counted is 56% for Obama.
OH is going to be a cluster. They mentioned over 200k provisional ballots handed out.

It's early yet, but it looks like here in NH, the people are sending the Tea Party/Free State Repubs packing. Dems for Gov and 2nd district House, my local races are all Dems, the only close race is the Shea Porter/Giunta 1st district race.

In reality, there are three, maybe four major parties in the country. The hard right (Theocons), center-right (Republicans), center-left (Old School Democrats), and hard left (American Progressives/Libs). You could debate just how "major" that hard left party would be (not half as big as the Theocon crowd, I suspect).

Obama may win, but he'll mostly be a lame duck in the true sense of the word.

Pretty much. For me, the social issues far outweigh the economic issues (primarily because there is little difference between the Rs and Ds when it comes to spending). That's why I went Democrat this election. I think I ended up voting for one R on the entire ticket. It was time to send those d*ckheads a message.

Not that RMoney had any good economic plans, but even if he did, there are times when social justice is more important than economic prudence. This is one of them. Thankfully, Obama will be able to appoint Supreme Court justices who will keep Roe v. Wade intact.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

The electorate has changed.

I'm still convinced the "easiest" path back for the Republicans in presidential years (off elections, they can pull a better electorate) is to start pulling conservative latinos not born in Cuba, which is the only one they compete for now. They don't have to change as many other policies in that scenario. They just take a hit on immigration.

Every four years, the % of voters that are white is dropping 3-4%. If they only get 10% of blacks and 25% of hispanics while getting 55-58% of a shrinking white base, they're going to keep losing.

You expect too much of them. The only message they'll receive is that they just aren't conservative enough.

The sad part is, you're probably correct. I can only hope they return to their roots at some point in the future though.

Roots are determined by just how far back you want to go or whether or not you want to deal with the name change.

Pat Buchanan agrees with you.
