Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Fox has called Indiana for Romney.

no surprises so far

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

What happened to not calling things until all the country's polls closed?

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Oh boy this is riveting.

Yeah, it's like watching a glacier make its way toward the sea.

"In the last hour, the glacier has advanced two feet. Here to explain is the noted geologist, Hans Foote."

-- Well, Fritz, we know for sure that sometime in the next two weeks the glacier will advance to the seashore and calf, creating an iceberg.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

No one wants to wait until 1am when Alaska's done.

Do Guam and American Samoa get to vote for the President?

If so, we might as well just wait for morning if we wait for every poll to close.

Come to think of it, I may just do that anyway. :)

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

1% in for New Hampshire. Vote totals: 28-14 Obama. No idea on Romney's 2nd half adjustments. Back to you, Curt and Terry.

Guam's straw poll (they're essentially a day ahead, so they voted "yesterday" and include the presidential race even though they have no EVs), went to Obama by a 3-1 margin. It's gone with the actual winner every year since 1984.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Once again this is your Eye-Witless News reporter reporting live from the Eye-Witless News Studios. While we're all waiting for more definitive voting results to be tabulated here's a look at one of the more provocative questions appearing on everyone's ballot today. Of course I'm speaking of Initiative 372-B to wit:

Shall there be a constitutional amendment to your state's constitution requiring that all members of the Election Commission in YOUR STATE be ineligible-to-vote-illegal-aliens and subsequent thereto shall said members be subject to perpetual kicking of their respective hindquarters with speed skate length skate blades thereto necessitating the need for malfunctioning voting machines in your precinct, the votes from which shall be tabulated by inept replacement officials, but not before this ballot question runs on for several more paragraphs making absolutely no sense and having generated no conversation before Election Day among any group of people with more than a third grade education, who couldn't care less and will be watching reruns of Mannix rather than voting returns on Election Night?

Here are Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, Dan Rather and Walter Cronkite with an in-depth consideration of the question.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Why is it that the most competitive states seem to have the most problems with their voting systems? It's not like they haven't had many years to improve things.
The cynic in me says that its because they are competitive that they are having problems.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

are you new here? welcome to america
I know they don't do that now but I remember at one point it made a huge difference so they waited until the polls closed to call stuff. It was awhile ago so I can't remember what exactly happened.

Too bad they don't have a way to mute the party talking heads and only have the people who are neutral talk about stuff. The talking heads are so predictable it is a waste of air to let them speak.

I don't think that is the case. The broadcast media would wait until a state's polls closed to declare the results in that state, but I am fairly certain that there was never a time when they would wait until all polls closed on the west coast before they would start declaring states on the east coast.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

That's Canada. No one wants to wait until 1am when Alaska's done.
IIRC Canada does not start election coverage on TV in your province until the polls have closed. How that works these days with the internet is beyond me. I can remember one recent election where the Progressive Conservatives were down to 3 seats after the general.

But Canada works a lot like us - each district (Riding) elects it's MP. The party with the most MP's gets to name the PM.

I just remember the commentary being that the election was reported as being 'over' so it discouraged voters from voting in states that closed late. I think it was when I was in Grad school (>20 yrs ago) which would explain why I can't remember the specifics.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

There's not much I agree with Pio about, but his comments on voting station integrity are pretty spot on.

In the rural Wisconsin community where I live, you go down to city hall, walk up to the cafeteria table where Agnes Glover and some of her friends who like to keep track of everything and everybody in town sit and write down who shows up. Once you get past Agnes you just to to a little curtained off booth and this female voice behind one of the curtains says, "Well?" And I said "Obama," and she goes, "Are you sure?" and I said "yup," and she goes, "He's black you know," and I said I didn't care, she said "OK then" and that was that. No hanging chads, and somebody always gets elected, and the corn always comes in unless it's too dry or too wet. Every 4 years I switch parties, so next time I'll vote Republican. I do this to stay open minded. Some people vote the same party every year to stay principled. Same thing.

I recall that it was talked about a lot in both 1980 and 1984, when the losing candidates made concession speeches before 11 pm EST--before the polls closed on the west coast--but nothing was ever done about it.

Well, between 1980 and 1996, the Presidency was decided pretty early every time. There really wasn't a close race to be had there.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

I remember that being an issue in Florida in 2000. The panhandle was still voting after the rest of Florida had finished up, and the media called Florida for Gore, and people just started going home. Considering how close that ended up being, that could've been a factor in the final count if they'd just held their projection till all the voting in Florida had wrapped up.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Wow. Richmond City in VA went HARD right this time around. Between 2008 and 2012, the Republicans have picked up 55,000 votes. It went 80% Democrat in 2008 and this year it's 59% Republican.
