2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

I'm hopeful but not necessarily optimistic that Romney will win. {Insert favorite election analysis cliches here.}

I just wonder if the GOP powers that be understand how winnable this election is/was if the party appealed a little more to many middle class people who are conservative at heart and are looking for responsible fiscal policy but who are turned off by the extreme social and religious conservatives who have hijacked the discussion (or at least diverted it). I know many long time republicans who are just decent, hard working, every day folks who are frustrated as hell that the party is having to oblige that element. I relalize many will say both parties are culpable of NOT listening to concerns like those of the tea party, but that noisy element has hurt the GOP to the Dems' gain, it seems to me.

This is precisely why I'm voting for Obama.

Perhaps. The Tea Party has backed some real winners hasn't it? You'd have to stay up late at night to find a candidate for the Senate of the United States who admitted to "dabbling" in witchcraft. Ay Caramba! On the other hand, some cultural Democrats (Reagan Demcrats?) might not be overly enthused about you know who, either. You know the reasons as well as I. Do they vote for Romney or just stay home?

Welcome to the rise of the Libertarian Party.

Finally, for anyone who's been paying attention, young adults are deliberately overcharged under PPACA to keep costs down for older people. How will that dynamic play out, do you think?
Small companies have done this for decades with blended rate premiums for their employees. Long time employees of small companies are familiar with this practice if they've been paying attention. Small companies have also been finding creative ways to drop employees with chronic disease and / or those recently diagnosed with a serious illness off their insurance by decreasing their hours or simply jettisoning them entirely in attempts to "control" their costs per insuring their workforce. It happens and has been happening for decades. It's another significant factor in how the uninsured have accumulated.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

1) Jimmy Carter vs Ronald Reagan took place 32 years ago. Those "young" voters you speak of from that era are now 60.

so what? I was suggesting a parallel situation might apply again this time around too: '08 youth enthusiam for Obama turns into hardened experience for a 23-year old in '12 who wants something better than unfulfilled promises.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

From Peggy Noonan:

I suspect both Romney and Obama have a sense of what’s coming, and it’s part of why Romney looks so peaceful and Obama so roiled.

This could go both ways. Obama might now know he has four more years of this @#$. Romney may know he can simply go back to making money.

:) You can't tell me they don't have those thoughts at times, however fleeting. You have to be a lunatic to want that job.

So, I think righties spend an inordinate amount of time trying to equate any and all elections to the 1980 contest. This despite the fact that the youngest people who could have voted in that election are now 50 years old. As I've stated before, if I had a quarter for every time some knuck' has brought up the Reagan-Carter contest I'd be 10 bucks shy of being a Republican myself. Many voters nowadays have no memory of Reagan or a vague one if they do. In fact he's probably best remembered by the younger set for his memory problems while in office. By "younger" I mean those under 40. If you keep harping on an election long ago consigned to history you reinforce what most younger voters feel, which is the GOP can't relate to anybody not lined up outside the Old Country Buffet at 5 AM every morning looking to cash in on the all you can eat special.

I hate Old Country Buffet.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

I have a new prediction and it's not going to please the gay marriage opponents...

People seem awful light on the predictions this year vs the last election! What gives? Look, I don't think there's going to be any "November surprises" out there between today and tomorrow so lets see what people think. No points off if we get it wrong.

BHO wins easy.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

blah blah blah.

what part of "parallel" do you find so difficult to understand?

I haven't met a "young" person yet this time around who is enthusiastic about Obama. Generally even if they do support him, it is with a shrug and a sense of resignation. Most of them say they are really tired of him making excuses: "who cares whose fault it is, anyway? Give it a break, stop complaining, and start fixing things already!" is the more general attitude.

Of course, most of the young people I know are recent college graduates or entrepreneurs, and so perhaps there is a self-selection bias.
