Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

The grass roots is a failure in this primary.
True, dat. They had one goal for the primary: stop Mitt. Compare and contrast with the one goal the Democratic grassroots had in 2008: stop Hillary.

This election is going to be all about the one thing you are not allowed to talk about in American politics: wealth disparity. Protecting and increasing it has been the main driver of right wing politics since FDR -- they lost on the direct issue for 20 years so they learned to disguise it as something else. Now it's going to be in the spotlight every day.

I have no idea how it will work out, but it's for the best that the election will be a referendum on something real rather than the usual shadow boxing.

I appreciate him making the comments. It was hard to tell him apart from Jesus Christ before. This makes it easier.

Given that low income white working class voters & elderly voters are the backbone of the GOP, I'm not sure The Mittster is endearing himself to his base which is already lukewarm about him.

I don't have a problem with that at all.

Not sure if this is tongue in cheek or not, but even if you don't have a problem with the sentiment, isn't it at least a pretty huge error from a momentum perspective? Instead of getting to ride a Florida bump, he gets to backtrack/defend this all week. Fun.

The latest out of Ohio:

A new Public Policy Polling survey shows President Obama has broken even with Ohio voters: 48% now approve of him with an equal 48% disapproving. His net approval in the key battleground state has increased 8 points from 41% to 49% since early November.

Meanwhile, Obama's leading rival is moving backward. Just 28% of Ohioans have a favorable opinion of Mitt Romney to 56% with a negative one. As a result, Obama leads Romney in a possible general election match up by seven points, 49% to 42%.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm guessing Romney's standing in the Rust Belt isn't going to be going up much after his "poor people" comment makes the rounds. Seems like he'd be a better fit for the '84, '88, '96, or 2000 election campaigns. Just not sure yet another son of privilege is the best person to carry the torch in this current economic climate. Regardless, he's got to get his favorability back into positive terrority. Aside from maybe Richard Nixon I can't think of anybody else who's won the Presidency with more people disliking him than liking him.

Interesting counterpoint, also from PPP:

@ppppolls: Worth noting: in March 08 when GOP was unified and Dems were not, McCain led Obama 49-41 in OH. Situation reversed now:

Now, Romney sure isn't Obama, but still. A looooooong way to go.

Agreed. One difference though is I don't believe Obama had high unfavorables vs his favorables back in '08, thus giving him a better chance to improve his standing vs McCain.

I doubt most swing voters are going to be swayed by something they most likely already knew about a GOP presidential candidate.

Also poor is a much more relevant term for many these days...whether they have become it or are staring it in the face. Oddly, increases in the number of poor is the reason Romney still has a decent shot at the white house.

I know a number of big time rich folks that don't see any of it and feel the media is 'making it up'. Funny thing is that that group won't vote for Obama even though they think there is nothing wrong with the economy.

I think you're right. But it's not odd at all, party in control gets blamed for the malaise. Only way Any republican can win is if our economy tanks even harder or major sentiment change: EU financial crisis... and more bailouts. Gasoline spike to $5 in the summer or some other shock.

I think Republicans need to get marriage/abortion on the ballot in the 10 contested swing states to get them riled up and show up, even if they hate Mitt or Newt. I think independents got nowhere to go...stay home (3rd party) or vote change.

I'm surprised Newt didn't use the double 0 (0/0/12.5) slogan or (0/0/7) maybe even triple 0 (0/0/0) compared to Cain's (9/9/9) tax plan.

Florida might not be a done deal

TAMPA, Fla. -- Florida's primary might not be over just yet.

The Newt Gingrich campaign is gearing up to challenge the results of the Florida Republican presidential primary based on the Republican National Committee's own rules which state that no contest can be winner-take-all prior to April 1, 2012. (See RNC memo.)

It was assumed that Mitt Romney, who won Tuesday's contest, would gain all 50 of the state's delegates. But the Gingrich campaign plans to challenge Florida's allocation and demand the delegates be divvied up proportionally. (See Gingrich memo.)

Fox News has learned exclusively that on Thursday, a Florida Gingrich campaign official will begin the process of trying to have the RNC rules enforced so that the Sunshine State delegates are distributed based on the percentage of the vote each candidate got.

Rachel Maddow had reported the other day that that was supposed to be the way it was run. I was surprised this didn't come up before and I'm not surprised it has now.

Yes, but Rachel is only watched by Communists like yourself, not real 'Murikans!™ "Real" 'Murikans!™ are fed their pablum by Fox "News" and were probably completely blindsided by this.

"Real Murikans" don't steal other "real Murikans" material.

People actually watch that crap?

Maddow is just FNC with a brain and a sense of humor. But it is true that it's the same sort of place to go to have one's beliefs massaged instead of challenged.

I couldn't disagree more.

This is the campaign playbook from 2004. Not sure if its relevant in 2012. People who are anti-Obama are already coming out in droves. The trick the GOP needs to pull is to keep the less likely to turnout but strongly pro Obama young voters and minority voters at home. Start putting anti immigration or anti gay marriage initatives on the ballot in swing states and you're taking a huge risk that they match righty enthusiasm.

Minnesota must be behind then because we have gay marriage on the ballot this November and they want to add voter ID to the ballot. Both those issues could swing the state although most pundits color Minnesota in the Obama camp and don't list us as a swing state.

Agree. Push to ban gay marriage could backfire...if not today, very likely 4 years from now. This as public sentiment is moving from a societal fear of the unknown (ie gay marriage) to getting tired of perceived bigotry.

We've heard about protecting marriage. Where's the move to protect our Constitution?
