2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Newt or Romney, who cares, they both suck. At least Newt will have some good soundbites before getting crushed, Romney will just have a stick up his butt like he does now

Problem is, Newt getting crushed does a lot more than lose the presidency. It also loses the House and more seats in the Senate. Hope those soundbites are worth it.

Well since walrus claims to not like either party technically he shouldnt care about that ;)

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

The MSM and the Dems are praying for Newt...his ego alone will up their ratings and lower the GOPs electoral count.

They are not stopping at prayer. The unions are spending millions on attack ads against Romney to ensure Newt gets the nomination cause they know Obama will crush Newt. It's all over but the shouting. Four more years. Serves the GOP right for not coming up with anything better than this collection.

Word at Morning Joe today was Newt was losing ground in Florida and Romney may be able to build the Firewall in Florida that he needs. Newt's campaign appears to be a rollercoaster and now that it's up it's headed down again.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

It looks like the 1992 Democratic primary field before it turned out that Clinton was an adept politician. All the "name" Dems were waiting for 1996, much like a lot of Republicans seeming to wait until 2016.
This could be a blessing in disguise (a very, very heavy disguise) for the GOP. This election could be a firewall between the party of 1980-2010 which is bankrupt, and the party of the future. They need a clean break from the past and 8 years of Obama may give it to them. They had this opportunity during the years of Clinton but blew it with the Dubya team, which was all recycled Reagan and Bush Sr. apparatchiks.

Even though it's a horrendous trainwreck because the actual people themselves are deadwood, there is one very good sign for the GOP field: it's experimenting with a lot of new ideas for the first time since the mid 70's. Up until this race they have been set in theological concrete: lower the taxes the rich pay (top marginal rate on income, estate, cap gains) by any means necessary, militarize rhetoric and policy to maintain the empire, never miss a chance to attack "the welfare mentality" being careful to ignore all the social and corporate your constituencies receive, and caress the theocons' anger centers whenever you need a few million votes or a few million dollars from those useful idiots. This time around they have candidates mounting challenges against every one of those sacred cows.

The only intelligent Nocon ever, Irving Kristol, said the best thing that ever happened to the Republicans was Watergate, because it destroyed the creaky old Eisenhower-Nixonian coalition and allowed fresh ideas and Young Men In A Hurry to permeate the party. This 2012 campaign is the last act of creative destruction for the GOP (if Newt wins), and then they can get on with whatever comes next (maybe, like Cameron's New Tories, that's a green, tolerant, fiscal conservatism).

I understand. Just making the more general point that Newt doesn't just bring a presidential loss, he brings a whole trail of suck.

Yeah they spent this whole time saying "Anyone but Obama" and forgot to tell them "Anybody" can't run.

Saw some indications of this, but I think it has a lot to do with his lackluster debate performance more than anything else. If he gets back to the old Newt, in particular expect to hear of the Romney-Pelosi conspiracy tonight, he'll rocket back up and Mittens is screwed. Another performance like last time and I can see Romney eeking out a win next week.

Regarding the GOP changing, I'd expect a sitting President to enact that better than a candidate having to make it through the primaries. As I heard a commentator say the other day, the country isn't making any new old white guys to boost the Republican coalition. If Romney lost to Obama, the narrative will be he wasn't conservative enough. If its Gingrich, it'll be he had too much baggage. The people who make money off of conservative causes, the Limbaughs, Becks, Liberty U, Focus on the Family, etc gain by stoking outrage. They lose with moderation. I don't expect them to give up the ghost so easily based on one election.

Agree on Newts debate in Florida. He was just soft. There's little worse than a soft Newt.

There's been a counter intuitive point of view that if the nomination lasts into the summer that it could even help Romney (assuming he wins). The thinking is that he stays front, center in the press until the last possible moment and by then, he's become so familiar with the American people he starts to negate some of Obama's incumbancy advantage. Who knows for sure tho...

Michelle Bachmann has announced her intention to seek reelection for her House seat.

I refer to this generally as Cokie Roberts Logic. What that means is when a pundit has Democratic leanings in their past, they tend to overcompensate by spinning any event as a boon to the GOP. Picture a news program from 2004..."Video has surfaced of George W Bush in a hot tub with OBL receiving a suitcase full of cash! Cokie, what's your reaction? Cokie (in annoying creaky voice): Weeelll Ted (Koppel) this reaaally benefits the Republicans."

Certainly the extended primary benefited Obama in 2008 for two very big reasons: 1) He was relatively unknown when he jumped into the race outside of Dem circles, and 2) The more people saw of him, the more they liked him (Reagan and Clinton both shared this quality). Neither of these apply to The Mittster - or Newtie for that matter. Having run for President non stop for 5 years, people know who he is. Also, the more they get to know him, the less they like him. He's already way underwater in this fav/unfav by about 15%. Not Gingrich #'s, but certainly not Obama ones (who's rated favorable personally, and is at 48/46 currently on job approval, so lets call it even).

I could see Gingrich benefitting from a long primary as he'd be able to raise money and set up shop in some states where he isn't now (like, oh I don't know, lets say Virginia for example? His adopted home state where he failed to qualify for the primary).

That's all they got attacking Obama "are you better off economically?" Reagan question. government takeover. I think Newt is trying to re-run Reagan campaign (most of his story is about Reagan era). but he doesn't have the military/foreign mishaps that Carter had to attack Obama on.

Plus, Obama is (Bush II 3rd term GOP). Newt 12.5%, Mitt 20%, Barack 25% ... call for corporate tax rate... Is there a large democrat/independents calling for lower corporate tax rate?

It's like both party work for the wealthy... maybe everyone should be forced to disclose corporate sponsorship.

In the meantime, maybe we should require politicians to wear the logos of their "sponsors." Hey, if it works for NASCAR, why not Congress:

Newts softening again tonight. He's defensive and not looking the Mittster in the eye.

Mitt was doing really really well until Santorum beat him upside the head on healthcare. Newt terrible throughout though.
