2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Tease.

In other news, how Nancy Pelosi helped Mitt Romney to help New Gingrich to help Barack Obama to help Nancy Pelosi.

Must admit, when I heard Pelosi's original statement I interpreted it as "yeah, I know something that will prevent Newt from ever being president. I know Newt." But this is a far more fun theory.

Maybe I'm just missing the politician mentality, but I don't get it. Why would Pelosi want Romney over Newt? Or is it some kind of double cross and she actually wants Newt nominated. my head hurts.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Regarding the Republican response...

Two things that the dweeb from Indiana said caught my ear. First off though, could they pick a more weaselly looking guy? I don't agree with Paul Ryan on, well almost anything, but at least he's somewhat charismatic.

Anyway, former Indiana governor said:

"I personally would add to that list admiration for the strong family commitment that he and the first lady have displayed to a nation sorely needing such examples."

Now, I'm FAR from PC but that's kind of a shot at, well, it's kind of like saying about an african-american athlete, "He's surprisingly articulate."

I just was thinking, did he really just say that? Maybe I'm just reading too much into that and he honestly meant it as an example for all Americans and not just African Americans.

Then he also said...

"One in five men of prime working age and nearly half of all persons under 30 did not go to work today."

OMG! So nearly HALF of all persons under 30?

You mean like children? They didn't go to work today? SHOCKING!

I hate politics (both sides), but it's a train wreck that I just can't look away from.

I think its move involved than that! Check it out:

Pelosi says she has the goods on Newtie. Romney jumps on this and publicly asks her to spill the beans (he's already said this in so many words). This sets up a situation where Romney and Pelosi are allies, which allows Newt a perfect foil to rail against (his problem in the last debate, he had nothing to biatch about). Pelosi will then reveal some small transgression (Newt doesn't shower regularly, dislikes dogs, didn't cry during the end of Schindler's list, etc) which will have no real consequences against Gingrich, but is perfect for him to rant against in the next debate. You can see his over the top blathering about a liberal conspiracy against him, but he never expected Romney to take part in it.

Make no mistake, Dems want Newt to win Florida. At the very least it extends the primary into May, and the more people see of these guys the less they like them.

Most people I saw took it as a shot at Gingrich, if a shot at anyone. I took it as part of that common refrain of deteriorating values that's pretty common in that type of speech.

You're the first person I've see to construe it as something relating solely to African-Americans. Even if it was, Obama has said much the same thing himself.

Again, not saying that he meant it that way for sure, but it could certainly be interpreted that way.

This was a prepared speech, not some off the cuff comments, so he may have wanted to be more careful coz I'm pretty surprised that the shrieking left hasn't said anything about this.

It's crazy to me that Pelosi did this whole "I know things about Newt" line little more than a month ago, and now we're right back to doing it again.

It's a judo move against Romney, and Rover has it described well, above.

Any time you can dictate your opponent's move, that's good. Romney should either have let it lie or defended Newt against the predations of those big, bad, bully librul blah blah blah. But instead he's panicking because of SC so he took the hook. Result: higher negatives for both Romney and Newt and more alienation between their camps. Corporate money backs winners, not ideologies, so this kind of embarrassment drives it right over to Obama.

The Republicans constantly tried to do this through their Fox proxies in 2008; it's the kind of thing proxies are made for (and in fact one of the explicit reasons why Ailes and other Republican operatives created FNC in the first place so long ago). Neither Clinton nor Obama fell for it. In a bygone era the Republicans had the self-discipline to abide by Reagan's 11th Commandment, but the current crop is so clueless they'll probably make it even worse.

This also shows surprising cleverness out of Pelosi that I don't normally associate with Democratic politicians when it comes to taking advantage of their GOP opponents.

I have to ask though to my conservative friends out here, are you really on board with Romney being the next President? I mean, if the guy can't dispatch Newt freakin' Gingrich, how the hell is he supposed to defeat Al Quada? This could be the weakest field for a nomination I've ever seen, as even the 2004 Dems had two sitting Senators, a current governer (I think, not sure when Dean left office) and a retired general. This field has an ex governor who's been out of office for 6 years, an ex senator who got crushed in his re-election 6 years ago by 18 points, an ex House Speaker who resigned 12 years ago after being forced out, and a sitting Congressman who's insane. This race should already be over, as even George W Bush facing the much tougher McCain challenge wasn't facing this much uncertainty by this point.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

It looks like the 1992 Democratic primary field before it turned out that Clinton was an adept politician. All the "name" Dems were waiting for 1996, much like a lot of Republicans seeming to wait until 2016.

No. I'm leaning toward not voting this time. Perhaps never again.

The Dems and MSM want Romney to run against Obama, not Newt. Obama has a better chance against a right center guy like Romney. The Dems and MSM also don't want to see Obama have to debate Newt.

Let's enumerate your field:
1. The Governor who's been <strike>running</strike> out for 6 years
2. Ex Senator who got crushed 6 years ago
3. Ex House speaker who resigned 12 years ago
4. Bat poop crazy Congressman

You're point being? :D

I'm hoping (1) and (2) split the rest of the primaries and (3) and (4) siphon off enough votes to prevent (1) or (2) from clinching before heading down to Tampa. If it's a choice among the 4:
1. belongs in a Waffle House. His campaign is the biggest entitlement program in the USA. He thinks he should be president because he is Mitt Romney.
2. needs somebody next to him to puncture the ego balloon when it gets too big. Smart guy - brilliant maybe, but his governance style will drive people nuts *. Sometimes too smart.
3. nice guy, but
4. Bat poop crazy

* -- Want's a 10% cut in domestic spending. Goes out there and makes a grand speech or two saying we need to cut 25% of spending. Congress and media go apethit and after hemming and hawing and 25 Chuck Schumer moments later, vote in 10% cuts and pat themselves on the back for stopping the insanity of President Gingrich. Newt grudgingly accepts the deal and then dances around the Oval Office laughing. If he had asked for 10% cut, he would have been lucky to get 5%.

I will reluctantly vote for Romney because I think there's a good chance Kennedy and Ginsburg retire at some point between 2013 and 2016. I'm not expecting much obviously, but hey maybe that's a good thing.

This is ****ing idiotic. Obama will get at least 400 electoral votes against Gingrich, probably more.

The idea that Gingrich is a good debater is even stupider. You do realize Obama is under no obligation to agree to a Lincoln-Douglas debate, right? Or for that matter any debate at all. If there are going to be debates, they will likely be in a town hall format. Building a reputation as a good debater by going after John King is one thing, trying to do that in a general election by going after Doris Soandso from Anywhere,USA is going to work just as well, I'm sure.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Well, right, I'm not going to leave them a cache of millions. But if I die in an accident and I haven't exhausted my cash, I'd rather see my kids and grandchildren get the head start.

you can set that up ... either a trust or maybe asset (house/land) transfer. with our tax codes you'll probably need a tax accountant or lawyer.

Looks like Newt is calling for 0% estate tax, 0% capital gains tax, 15% flat income tax, 12.5% corporate tax. something about robust growth in the 80's and 90's from tax cuts.
And this will somehow balance our budget. this is NUTS, republicans have drank the koolaid.

Newt is a decent story teller (lecturer): found most of his stories entertaining, but he can't seem to get a good narrative going... he attacks Mitt on tax rate and then calls for 0% capital gains so Mitt and the top .0001% will pay ZERO taxes.

Yeah...the GOP can pretend he isnt the biggest insider in history while he runs against guys like Romney, but that wont fly in the general election when people other than party faithful are putting the screws to him. His smug attitude and hypocritical statements will bite him in the butt and Obama is not Romney he will jump on them at full strength.

The MSM and the Dems are praying for Newt...his ego alone will up their ratings and lower the GOPs electoral count.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Newt or Romney, who cares, they both suck. At least Newt will have some good soundbites before getting crushed, Romney will just have a stick up his butt like he does now
