"Santorum released his tax returns this morning. He immediately qualified for a dozen social Obama programs." @gselevator

I'm curious what the proper capital gains tax rate is in everyone's opinion. There's a good deal of global variance.

IMO it should be pretty much the same tax rates as income...if you earn 100k in capital gains...you should pay the same taxes as if you earned it the hard way.

Why should I sitting on my can pay less taxes than someone who works overtime flipping burgers? Even for a top exec earning a couple hundred thousand, paying sigificant taxes but adding huge value to the economy...why should they pay a very high tax rate whereas someone sitting on their can pays a lower rate?

The classic argument is that if someone gets taxed on cap gains that they'll put their money under a mattress. Why in world would anyone choose to not make free money on their money just because their taxed a bit more on it?

I have yet to hear any solid arguments of why capital gains should have radically lower taxes than that of hard labor.

you've already been taxed on your hard larbor. (which IMHO is wrong wrong wrong) then you put your capital at risk. then they tax your kids again when they inherit it.

If you really wanted to make the whole system as progressive as all get out, you'd need to do the following:
- lower sales taxes
- change the income tax brackets to multiples of 7: (7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42)
- tax capital gains as ordinary income
- have a tiered property tax system
- have a tiered inheritance tax system
- lower the OASDI rate and eliminate the income limit so that all income is subjected to this tax

Sadly, I think you can expect more of this **** throughout the rest of the year.

Nice Planet (c).

Like I said, wait until the Internet hunts this guy down. Specifically That Website Which Must Not Be Named. They'll have him reduced to a blubbering mass in the corner of his house when the police find him.

You don't mess with cats on the Internet.

I agree with what you say, but I don't think that was his point at all.

Funny, cause that's pretty much exactly what my point was. But continue to sarch out your boogeymen everywhere you see them.

"Sarch" may be a typo, but I love it. It's exactly the kind of word my coworkers would use ("Sarch your hurt for Geeeeeeeeeezus"!)

I completely missed last night's debate, not only the event but the fact of it. Anything interesting said, or was it just the usual boilerhate?

This was in one blog's comments section:

Not sure if we just watched a debate between Two-Face and the Penguin.

So I saw that Romney's plan to deal with illegal immigration is that they "self deport". Great, Mittens. Why didn't anybody else think of that? With this kind of deep thinking and workable solutions, one wonders why Michelle Bachmann ever left the race. We're just going to ask them to leave and they will. How about we give them ruby slippers too, so they can click them together three times and be transported back to where they came from. :D:rolleyes:

Perhaps we can combat the drug problem better if only we gave the cartels a place to surrender their meth. You know, similar to the bin outside of the Goodwill store.

With Romney's revolutionary ideas, we can finally make this a reality. After all, we mustn't be too intrusive when we enforce our laws, and must respect the individual's right to break the law.

I think self-deportation is more of thing than you give it credit for. Certainly enough to send Mother Jones into a tizzy.

...but it's a real term, the phrase of art, in fact, for the strategy behind the wave of anti-immigration bills introduced across the country in the last two years. The brainchild of anti-immigration groups like the Immigration Law Reform Institute, and its counsel, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (who recently endorsed Romney), self-deportation is the intended effect of laws and requirements (such as those passed in Arizona and Alabama) that would make it so difficult for undocumented immigrants to work, rent, or go to school that they will simply "choose" to leave.

At least John Kerry won at something, right?

It would be real fun to try to impute spending for the folks below.

Something like Net Worth BOY - Net Worth EOY + Gross Income should equal what you spent (in round numbers). They apply a fair tax of 25 and 30% to see what you'd get vs. what they paid in income tax.

Mr. Gingrich, a former House speaker, on Tuesday morning threatened not participate in any future debates with audiences that have been instructed to be silent. That was the case on Monday, when Brian Williams of NBC News asked the audience of about 500 people who assembled for a debate in Tampa to hold their applause until the commercial breaks.

In an interview with the morning show “Fox and Friends,” Mr. Gingrich said NBC’s rules amounted to stifling free speech. In what has become a standard line of attack for his anti-establishment campaign, Mr. Gingrich blamed the media for trying to silence a dissenting point of view.

"Free speech" does not work that way!
