Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Great site.

Interesting that Paul and Obama's breakdown of sources are so similar.

How has Obama already spent $100M on campaigning? Is that just lead costs on setting things up?

I would bet that the Obama campaign is allowing state and county Democratic Parties to piggyback onto the campaign since they're targeting the same voters. That means funding (or at least helping to fund) all the local Democrats with their voter ID/GOTV efforts. I believe he's had offices is battleground states since 2010. I don't think the national HQ in Chicago ever closed.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

You know cons are nervous when they start trotting out sex scandals from 3 decades go. Why can't you guys get your minds out of the 1980's. Gerry Studds? What's next - Thomas Jefferson boning his slaves?

Look, I've got bad and sobering news for you. Ronald Reagan was elected President 32, thats 32 freakin years ago. Move on already. The largest generation in the country (millenials) has no memory of the man. To have been old enough to have voted for him you'd now be approaching your 46th birthday.

Anyway, I think Newt's appeal is a bit of authenticity. As some guy in South Carolina said when asked about if Gingrich's 3 marriages bothered him, replied "Nope. I'm on my 3rd marriage myself". Its real hard to relate to Romney. Most people can't park investments in tax free offshore havens and then pay a 15% rate on millions in earnings. The Stepford Family isn't helping him either like it might some candidates. It all seems out of central casting with The Mittster.

I still think Romney eventually wins out. But its going to be a hollow victory. There seems to be this really odd groupthink going on that even though primary voters are reluctant to back Mitt in the primary, they're all going to flock to him in the general election. I don't think so, and here's why: 1) Turnout in these primaries hasn't been spectacular. In fact, take the Ron Paul cult out of it because those kooks aren't voting for either party in the general and its actually down. 2) Evangelicals take religion seriously, unlike the politicians themselves, and a good portion of them won't vote for Romney any more than they'd vote for a Buddhist or a Scientologist. I suspect that's his main problem in these southern states and why people are turning to Newtie.

Polling has Gingrich up 8 in Florida and Romney's 20+ point national lead down to 3.

Wow. Another poll has Gingrich up by nine. I figured with the NE contingent in FL that Romney had the state sewn up.

That lead grows if Santorum drops. (Paul won't drop...its the principle for him)

1) Turnout in SC was up 35% from 2008. That's more than just Free Rand Paul and crossover Dems.

2) You may be right. It will be an interesting question: so Mister Focus on the Family, do you vote for magic underwear to beat the Kenyan Muslin, or do you stay home and pray for Michelle Bachmann's husband to turn straight?

I'm more talking about Iowa and New Hampshire. I'm fairly confident SC will be in the bag for the GOP come general election time even if your buddy Paul is the nominee. ;)

You are trying to extend his argument to claim that hypocrisy is worse than an actual crime, I didn't read his post that way. I don't think that failing to speak out against something implies support for that choice. I think that the environmentalist examples are a much better parallel. In short, you shouldn't tell others how to live their life if you are not going to follow those principles in your own life.

Again, that's reasonable and I have no problem with it. Although in another context lots of posters, some of whom are liberal, have a real problem with Joe Paterno "not speaking up." It's just you're giving UNO the benefit of the doubt. Based on his previous posts, I think that's misplaced. To him, IMO, social conservatives are a threat to the union. So Clinton, Edwards, Studds, Jackson and Kennedy(s) get a pass. While Gingrich, Foley and the rest don't. Bad behavior is bad behavior, period.

The way I see the primary calendar shaping up, if Newtie can win in Florida that should carry his campaign all the way to Super Tuesday. Even with Mittens picking up some smaller states in the weeks afterwards (Nevada, Maine, etc) if Gingrich makes it to March he has GA, TN and OK voting that day. There's more Southern primaries througout the month with Texas going in early April. No reason for Newt to bow out before then.

I want Newt to win a bunch, and I want Mitt to win a bunch, but neither win enough. We then get Kepler's scenario of Jeb as the compromise.

Note that Jeb has not endorsed anyone.

I want to nominate a Bush for president just so I can marvel at the media's reaction. That would be great fun.
(While I actually believe Jeb would be a better choice than either one of those guys).

I think for that to be the outcome, Paul+Mitt and Paul+Newt also have to = not enough.

How good the Cubans have it? Jeebus, I hope that was pure sarcasm.... Otherwise you, good sir, have made the least informed and most naive post I have ever seen on this board. Ever.

That's why Cubans flee to the US. Because it's so epicawesomefantastic in Cuba.

Have you seen Sicko? It will teach you everything you need to know. Watch it and try not to cry when your naive perception of Cuba is shattered.

Sicko was good entertainment, but it's the slanted views of a politically-motivated filmmaker and should be watched with a large grain of salt.

I believe Florida is Republican only primary so all those independents will be shut out. I've to wonder how big the swing voters (independents) are and where they will swing to.

Republican will have to win this state to have mathematical chance.... they lost by 200k (<1%) votes in 2008... so this will be the "easiest" 2 out of 4 states they need to swing to have realistic chance in the general election. .

I'm not sure Brian Williams understands what his role is.

Arm the candidates with bombs? Yes, I think he knows.

I thought it was interesting when Romney gave his tax plan as lowering the tax rate and eliminating capital gains tax. Not sure where the revenue is going to come from...but...

Then Newt gave his plan of a flat tax of 15% (lowering the rate) and then said he would eliminate capital gains tax (for those making less than 200k...which would probably be everyone as everyone would jockey the system to turn income into capital gains). And then Romney goes...guess what! I wouldn't pay any taxes under your plan!

Is the goal of all these guys and their buds to not pay taxes?
