BTW, with Frothy Mix sinking in the polls, this could be a three-man race as early as next week. Romney is so awkward and Newt is such a barrel of monkeys that if Paul can just keep not getting voted off the island... who knows? :)

I think Mittens holds on. The mainstream Republicans are realizing holy crap we better come up with somebody here, and at least Mitt is better than Fartbongo.

The nightmare scenario is Frothy and Newtie dropping out and supporting Paul. Doubt it comes to that, but it would be epic lulz. The Republican convention might end up looking more like the Royal Rumble if that happens.

Oh, in the end I think Mitt gets the nomination. I just think it might drag on a bit longer and make the party look even stupider (and after Bachmann and Cain and Perry and Santorum and now Newt that is a high bar indeed).

The only permutation I can see where Mitt could possibly be stopped is if every single one of the not-Mitts lined up behind Paul, and this became Wall Street vs Main Street. The Repubs have enough crazies that if they all band together at once they have a shot. The obvious guy to line up behind was Perry, but he was just too big a doofus, even for them.

The other possibility would be Palin. That would really put the cherry on top of the greatest cluster-ef in American political history.

I like Newt's chances now. If he manages to bury Santorum and win South Carolina and Florida he'll have the inside track. The evangelicals will flock to him.

Evangelical leaders might, but I don't know if the man on the street will. He's exceptionally sleazy. I know sleazeballs have fooled the Fundies in the past, but there's gotta be a limit.

Speculation now is that faction A favors Mitt but is lukewarm on him and can't stand Newt. Faction B favors Newt but is lukewarm on him and can't stand Mitt. The hope (math?) is that both stay in the race until the end and neither has enough delegates to get a 1st ballot nomination. With a brokered convention the GOP finds a compromise candidate that appeals to both side.

(Newt + Mitt)/2 = Jeb Bush.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

I believe Florida is a winner take all primary. Whoever wins that state would grab the delegate lead I would think regardless of what's happened so far. How the horse race finishes up in SC will be telling. Say Santorum finishes a distant 4th. Does he stay in the race? The minute he departs that's a big boost to Newtie. On the flip side if he's running in the 20's its real tough for Gingrich to top The Mittster.

I too think Romney can eventually outlast anyone, and he should have greater appeal once the primaries move away from the South.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

The last tracking poll in FL was 1/13 - 1/17.

Romney 43
Santorum 19
Gingrich 18
Paul 9
MoE 5
Perry 2

A few things have changes since then, obviously. I'm sure Gingrich is well into the 20s now, but Romney is still strong here (FL).

a brokered convention!! wouldn't that be cool!

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

SC being insta-called for Newtie. JFC. This is a cluster.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

The winner of the South Carolina Republican primary is...Jefferson Davis!

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Novel concept.

Then, when they do call it, it's actually 40-32 Romney with 3% of the vote in. Heh.

Carville just called Santorum a headless chicken. "Everyone knows the chicken is dead but the chicken. We just had an interview with a headless chicken."

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Newtie with 38%, Mittens with 31%, Frothy McButtsecks with 16%.
