2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

So you're saying that if single-payer was going to pass through the House and Senate he wouldn't have signed it?

Again, he isn't a dictator.

You're arguing with someone who thinks Michelle Bachmann will be President and thinks people would like to have a beer with Mitt Romney.

Michelle reflects the true values of the Republican Party more than anyone else left in the field. Especially the guy they are nominating. And since the GOP is a lock to get the Presidency this year I felt I was on solid ground with my prediction.

I probably was wrong about the beer comment. It's more that he "looks" like a President. As Kepler said, he can't shake the fact that he's a dick.

Record. Not rhetoric. You do understand the difference, don't you? As we all found out when Bush was in office. It doesn't matter what the President says, it only matters what the President DOES. And no one has placated the right wing more than Obama has in the last 20+ years.

Now, see, this is where you lose me. It's one thing (and true) to say Obama has governed far to the right of where he campaigned. It's a second thing (and open to interpretation, though I think true) to say he intended to govern far to the right of where he campaigned. But it's a third thing (and I think pretty obviously untrue) to say he has governed farther to the right than Dubya.

Obama's record is mostly as a friend to big bidness and crony capitalism, but that was Dubya's entire reason for being in office: everything else, from foreign policy to the EPA, was in the service of that one goal. That is not true of Obama -- yeah, he's been a gift to the oligarchs, but he isn't solely driven to please them.

It is true...between his cowtowing to Wall Street and giving reach-arounds to the GOP every time there was some sort of conflict between them Obama pretty much walked away from the left. Name a left wing group (minus the NAACP) that didnt at some point call him out for how he was ignoring them. (gay community most of all)

Besides paying lip service to "Leftist" ideas, what has he done that was so left of center?

Oh, and I would have a drink with Mitt Romney, as long as he picks up the check :D ;)

edit: Kepler, it doesnt matter if he is solely driven to please them, it is what he does and he doesnt have the stones to act any other way. He is a coward. He is a wolf in sheep's clothing and he is lucky the GOP doesnt have a real candidate to run or he would be a footnote as a president, not a two termer.

I've been counting the Obama re-election as next to a sure thing - and thinking of voting for him myself - but seeing a couple stories about $5/gal gasoline likely coming this summer, now wondering hypothetically what would it take to sink him? Would gas staying over $5 into the fall do it? If so, would Obama recognize that and take steps (strategic reserve, pipeline flipflop or whatever) to deal with it proactively?
Or would he teflon right through high gas/food prices if unemployment improves? Or what do you think?
Or are gas price forecasts 99% B.S. anyway? Anyone know the history of accuracy there?

The last Dem with stones died in a plane crash 20 years ago. A courageous liberal president is something I probably won't live long enough to see.

I'll take the (D) this time and try for a better one next time. If there's one thing recent history has shown us it's that given the derp of the current GOP, *any* D is better than *any* R.

They're mostly BS. They said it would hit $5 a gallon last summer. It never did.

If it does hit $5, I think that would be enough to make it a major election issue, especially if people start getting all Occupy-y over it.

I find 5 dollar gas prices very hard to believe. Even if there's a war in the region, it'll be with Iran and the Saudi's have a big incentive to stick it to their biggest regional rival, hence they would just pump more oil to make up the difference. While sleazy, OPEC countries aren't stupid and know really high gas prices start making customers conserve much, much more and once they get into the habit of doing so they might not ever go back to their old ways.

Regarding Obama's re-election prospects, he's about the only politician I know of who's around break even in his fav/unfav ratings. Saw recently that the Mittster is at something like 35/(53) which is horrendous for a guy who has faced little advertising against him thus far. The Boner and McConnell are regarded even worse (as is Reid). A second recession sinks him. Otherwise this plays out like 2004 where the country is iffy on the incumbent until they look at the challenger & opposition party.

Oil prices are not the primary driver of high gas prices right now, judging by the trend in the crack spread. Supply and demand of gasoline is the primary driver of high gas prices. As such, I'm unconvinced that anything oil-supply-side would make a significant difference.

Who are you thinking of? Wellstone died in a plane crash 10 years ago.

Gloomy economic numbers, especially job numbers in key states. I think Republicans must run against Obama and run lots of ads on how our economy cratered under Obama.
I would run it regional (FL, OH, PA, MI) - basically mid-west-south.

With wins in Ohio and Pennsylvania, Barack Obama has likely won the presidency by a decisive margin, with the potential of carrying almost all the battleground states. He will be the nation's first black chief executive.

Exit polls showed fears about the economy eclipsing all other issues, a development working decisively to the advantage of Democrats up and down the ticket.

Key states (FL, OH, PA, MI) ... unless other states like MN, WI, IA is in play. All of these states were won by Obama and Rep needs to take 2 to have a shot at winning. And than they need to win some or most of these smaller swing states OBama (NC, VA, IN, CO, NM) Mccain(MO).

Check out Drudge.

As an aside, anything more in the media about the Hermanator's sex harassment antics?

I don't know, but I like how the pic halfway down the front page is either of "Dwight Gingrich" or "Newt Shrute" according to who you ask. A fitting likeness.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Romney's screw up may cost him.

http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20120119/US.Perry/?cid=hero_media
AP sources: Perry abandoning bid, backing Gingrich

That's according to Republican officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting the Republican presidential candidate's announcement.

Perry plans a news conference at 11 a.m. in South Carolina, where he will announce his decision.

He has faced calls to drop out of the race in recent days as polls show him languishing while Gingrich gains steam.

And this.

It's official: Rick Santorum has been certified the winner of the Iowa caucuses by 34 votes.

The Iowa Republican Party this morning posted the certified results from the Jan. 3 vote, which were first reported by the Des Moines Register.

While Santorum is officially the winner, political observers say the loser could be the Iowa caucuses.

The outcome means Mitt Romney can no longer be considered the first non-incumbent Republican to win both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary -- but it doesn't change the big-picture narrative of the GOP primary.
