Absolutely. Neocons back in the White House. Just what Planet Earth needs.

Well at least Romney might outsource us to China so we finally have our Communist Overlords!! ;)

I wonder what Obama thinks everyday. If he was half the man as president as he was during the campaign none of this would even matter.

I'd guess his legacy. It's the only thing I can think of that really explains his first year in office, spending all of his political capital (not to mention his congressional majority) on health care reform.

Was it worth it? As long as he's campaigning, he has no choice but to say yes. The real answer will come later.

I think outsourcing to India. manufacturing jobs to China.

Actually Obama did most of what he promised from watching some of the old 2008 campaign speeches, that cspan re-ran. at least on policy. Maybe the only thing he didn't do was financial reform that he was clearly mandated from angry voters after bank bailouts. Health care: check, get out of Iraq: check (he never mentioned when we would get out), go after AQ in Afghanistan: check (surge, more drone attack than Bush II)

It's clear that core Dem/Rep will vote party line, so it's up to the Independent-swing voters in the key states that will decide 2012. Plus voter turn out. It'll be interesting to see how Romney changes his message if any to the general public (independent swing votes) when he gets the nomination.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/11/03/women-independent-voters-biggest-swing/
both demographic groups, the percent of eligible voters remained constant from 2008 to 2010. Women turnout was 53 percent, while 28 percent of registered independents voted.

But their preferences had a big impact on the GOP win. Whereas the gender gap played a major role in 2008 with women voting for Democrats 56 percent of the time compared to Republicans 42 percent of the time, in 2010 the split was 49-48 percent for Democrats to Republicans.

Likewise, independent voters
supported Democrats 51 percent of the time compared to 43 percent of the time for Republicans in 2008. But in 2010, the Democrats garnered only 39 percent of the independent vote compared to 55 percent for the GOP.

This reminds me how long it's been since I lived in Maine. I thought Lewiston was fairly red (evangelical catholics), but maybe things have changed. Or my memory is garbage. Or both.

Lewison did vote to repeal Maine's same sex marriage law, so compared to Portland it is red (in Portland only about 25% of the voters voted for repeal if I remember correctly). And LePage did get more votes than Elliot Cutler, but not by the same margin in more rural areas (and LePage had the advantage of being French, Catholic, and from Lewiston) I still believe the primary reason the GOP wanted to move it out of the second district was to make the second district even more rural. The Maine Democratic Party used to be headquartered in Lewiston (my father attended some college Democrats meetings there in the 60s...).

Outside of Paul, Huntsman was also the one remaining candidate who wasn't going to sweep the Bush foreign policy team back into government. It'll be especially bad with Romney. With his troubles with evangelicals, you can be sure he's going to set the neocon suck-up dial to 11.

Doubtful. Why move further to the right when the far right has three choices:

1. Vote for Romney, get 50% of what you want.
2. Vote for Obama, get 0% of what you want.
3. Stay home, see #2.

Yeah, but they want huge government. Obama is far to the right of Romney. It's a one issue election and the issue is the tax rate of millionaire's and billionaire's.

Every election is about the top marginal rate for a certain portion of the electorate (roughly, .001% of the population, and 25% of the political contributions).

Given Newt and Perry's attacks on Romney, this may be the first time both parties discuss what constitutes good/useful/productive capitalism as opposed to bad/predatory/unproductive capitalism. They deliberately conflated them for decades in order to hide the wolves among the sheep, but for at least this moment in time the voters can tell the difference and are concerned about it. You can tell it is having an effect on the nation discourse from the frantic rhetoric being used about "attacks on free enterprise."

Fixed that for ya...

How long until those "job creators" start up something like this in the US?

You believe that? The electorate isn't smart enough. "Stop Taxing Job Creators" is etched into their brain. It's not going to go away.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

At the debate last night, Rick Perry said "South Carolina is at war with the federal government" and got a huge ovation. Um...South Carolina tried that before...we won.

Maybe we need to send General Sherman back in again to remind them.

All our problems stem from winning that War. The south should have won.

I get out of Iraq: check (he never mentioned when we would get out)

Not a big deal, but he did say he would get out in 2009

I agree that he did, or at least tried to (i.e. card check) do most of what he said he would. The problem is that nobody actually listened to what he said. He was the ultimate blank canvas whom everyone put their own dreams onto. Now he has the left that thought he would be able to walk on water and actually pass everything they (and he) wanted. He also has also has independants who didn't pay attention and realize that he wanted to pull the country to the left. He is a victim of his own campaign.

I think you're mostly right, but I also think you can say this about anybody who ever ran for re-election.

I don't see any real movement from the last election: everybody voting in both elections will vote for the same party. The question is whether there will be a meaningful difference (in purple states) by affiliation among 2008ers who sit out for (or are dead* in) 2012, and 2012ers who sat out (or couldn't vote in) 2008.

* This will not matter in Illinois, of course. ;)

No, we just shouldn't have let them back in the Union. Turn them all into little Puerto Rico's and Guam's.

He's to the right of George W. Bush, so don't you mean they didn't realize he wanted to pull the country to the right?
