2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

No that percentage said it was just "inspired". Meaning they just pick and chose what's literal. In fact let me directly quote their conclusions.

Because even they are able to see that the Earth did not flood and 2 of every type of animal didn't survive by being in a boat. Do you really think the only conservative candidates running for president would only be religious nutjubs if it was just a tiny minority who didn't believe that it was mostly true? Why is there more than one church within walking distance of most of the population. In fact just outside my neighborhood there are 3 churches literally on top of each other with parking lots touching and another 8 I can name off the top of my head spread a bit further out. A city of ~6500 people. (And there's a lot more outside of it on all the county roads.)

No...that only about half of Christians believe the Bible is literal is in the poll:

"While 30 percent responded that the Bible is the actual word of God, a clear plurality of 49 percent preferred the second interpretation, and 17 percent believe the Bible to be a book of fables and legends."

"54 percent of those who attend church on a weekly basis said they believe the Bible to be the literal word of God."

About half believe the Bible is literal, about half don't. You're using a very wide brush to paint Christians.

In the end, some GOP candidates are pursuing extremism rather than specifically Christianity (as they're convieniently ignoring the perspective of the guy named Jesus)...and it is rewarding Perry well.

So the predictions of Bachmanns pawlentification might be premature. Rumor has it she's not going to just mail it in tonight and put up a fight. We'll see about that.

Edit: Half way through...and Bachmann is mailing it in.

Bachmann just went after Perry. Bigtime. Santorum helped her out too.

Some of these people frighten me.

GOP applause lines: Executing people, letting uninsured people die. Maybe one of the Christians on the board can tell me which of Jesus' sermons those were in.

"Are there no prisons? Are there no work houses?" It must be crowded, with all you frightened ladies cowering under the bed.

Hardly, I described what the poll did. 31% think it's completely true. 47% percent think it's inspired. Which can only mean that they pick and chose what was truth handed down by their god and what was just the ramblings of flea infested goat herders. And of course the last percentage says the entire thing is on par with Grimm's fairy tales.

Perspective of a guy named Jesus? Which of the contradictory gospels will you reference for that? How about for example that 'he who is without sin cast the first stone' story where he doesn't refute the old testament punishment for adultery of stoning the woman but gets her out of it by removing the number of witnesses needed. (An old testament requirement and he got her out of it because saying they should or shouldn't would have caused him to "fail" their test.) And then he warns her not to do it again, ya know, because she'll be stoned.

Jesus said ****.

OK...this was the example you picked.

It may be your perspective that this passage is about stoning...but it's not that of Christianity. The passage was about judgement...and the relative comparison with stoning is what makes the point more powerful.

Why do I say that? Stoning was abolished in the west long ago (wiki infers it was abolished in 30AD)...and therefore in Christian domains, its been a nonfactor. The implications of harsh judgement has been devastating throughout the centuries...and therefore, this passage been a lesson for the ages.

Its easy to misunderstand Christianity. Some of the smartest people have (admittedly much of that comes from misinformation).

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

To return to the mundane thread topic, did anybody actually watch the debate last night? All the outlets seem fairly unanimous that (1) everybody ganged up on Perry and (2) he didn't do a great job defending himself. And what's the whole cervical cancer thing? Is it the usual "dag blamed gubmint" stuff?

Also, it sounds like Michelle is toast. I know this is going to come as a bitter disappointment to at least one poster ;) .

One of the things Perry tried to do as governor of Texas was mandate HPV vaccinations for high school aged girls. He backed off of it when a good-sized chunk of his constituency had a conniption about it. I'd guess you can take your pick as to why, it's going to have hit multiple of their knee-jerk topics.

Why'd he even try in the first place? When Jesus wrote the Declaration and Constitution he never said anything about that!

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

From the summation I saw this morning of that topic, it appears that the right wing hates the idea of mandating that vaccine because it usurps parental rights by having the government force an injection into people's 12 yr old daughters. Let's not pay any attention to the fact that many of those daughters will go on to have multiple sex partners 5-10 years down the road and will be at an elevated risk for HPV and perhaps cervical cancer.

It's the South. Many of those daughters will go on to have multiple sex partners 5-10 days down the road.

Today in Quixotic windmill tilting.

Too thin. Republican voters want a candidate they can have a Baconator with.

It makes no sense. Romney and Perry should make tea party voters sick to their stomach. Appears to me that the wrong people are getting called for these polls and the media is setting the table for who leads and who doesn't.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Far be it from me to use logic, but if Tea Partiers are such sticklers for the Constitution, then why do they use God in arguments. I seem to remember a part of the constitution that has a little something about the separation of church and state. Is that still in there?
