That's great. :) In the 70's WOR used to do the Mets lineups by shooting a closeup of the lineup card posted in the dugout.

Re: 2012 Elections in 3-D!

Bob Kerrey gets into the NE race on the last day to file.

In the space of three days two guaranteed GOP 2012 seats are now very much in play.

Don't know what to make of Nebraska. For once I think the talking heads have it right by moving this race to Leans Republican from Solid Republican. While Kerrey has a better chance than Nelson who PO'd everybody, his chances are largely going to rest on having a weak GOP opponent, much like what Nelson benefited from 6 years ago. Don't know a lot about the contenders on that end. At the very least, Kerrey can play the "job creator" card as I believe he founded some restaurant chain awhile back.

I dunno - sometimes, simple works.

Re: 2012 Elections in 3-D!

So Bill Simmons had Obama on his podcast today...

BS: Over the last five years, how many times have you envisioned welcoming the world champion Chicago Bulls to the White House?

Obama: Every year. And it hasn’t happened yet, but it will happen.

BS: It will happen? You’re like Joe Namath — you’re guaranteeing it.

Obama: Well, I’ve got another five years here and — [laughter] —
BS: You’re guaranteeing that, too. [Laughter.]

Obama: — somewhere along the line my Bulls are going to come through here. Absolutely.

watching Barry on CSPAN at "campaign fundraiser New York City", it's the same story. The prez just oozes confidence, and why not? There's no good alternative to 'four more years'. I still think they should just cancel the election and save us all the hassle.

He just seems like a really decent guy, and I just can't say the same for any of the Republicans, as much as I'd like to. Forget it.

They had Kiner's Korner too after the game. It was fun to see Seaver there quaffing a beer while discussing the game.

Michaud Announces Intention to Remain in House

Lewiston, Maine – Congressman Mike Michaud issued the following statement today regarding his intentions to remain in the House of Representatives:

While I have been humbled by all the support and encouragement I have received in the last few days, I've decided to not run for the U.S. Senate this year. I want to continue to represent the wonderful people of Maine's second district and keep working on the unique issues and challenges we face. I am also very proud of what I have been able to accomplish on behalf of Maine's and America's veterans and that work must continue.

I join many Mainers in being frustrated with how Washington operates and believe that both sides of Capitol Hill have fallen into a partisan rut. However, I am proud of being able to work across the aisle to deliver results and I think, for now, I can best continue those efforts in the House.

Guess that kills Emily Cain's bid for the House and opens the door for Chellie Pingree to be the next senator. It also means his seat should be relatively safe, while a Democrat is almost guaranteed to win her seat in CD-1. Now if we can just get rid of Collins...

I though it was a stronger general election candidate, but that if he did run for the senate the GOP would probably pick up his seat in the house. Although he claims to be a blue dog conservative democrat his voting record has drifted left since he was elected, and he is a reasonably reliable liberal vote now. His recent voting record is liberal enough to appeal to southern Maine and he is still popular in the north.

Re: 2012 Elections in 3-D!

I intend to ask my Congressman why he voted for a 3.8% sales tax on the sale of homes. I have a hunch he did not read the bill's fine print when it came up for a vote.

Re: 2012 Elections in 3-D!

(For the record, I understand he had a bad heart but) There's enough weirdness about Breitbart's death to keep conspiracy theorists busy for years. Here's the latest coincidence to emerge. It also doesn't help that a bomb squad was called to Rush Limbaugh's house later that same day to check out a suspicious delivery (As far as I know, it just turned out to be his March drop of oxycontin).
You could feel Matt Drudge sweating bullets when he posted that story.

While I'd never wish this to happen to someone, I have to wonder if its getting a little toasty wherever Breibart is now. Politicians certainly know what they're getting into before they run, but the part about setting up some poor obscure woman in the Agricultural Department for national ridicule and unemployment by doctoring videotape is the sleaziest political trick I've ever seen. Even worse was when several knuckledraggers, including some USCHO posters out here, couldn't bring themselves to admit they got completely duped by the guy. Whether he was doing this because he truly believing in conservative causes or he was just looking to line his pockets doesn't make it any more or less right. The guy was a scumball, plain and simple.

I dunno about conspiracy theories, but after this incident my wife just rolled her eyes and laughed, "coke. It's a helluva drug." She did not elaborate.

In other news, the Kochtopus is having a bad day, PR-wise. Nothing says "classy" like a widow fight.

I remember when Cato was interesting, in that charming Von Misean "Let's Postulate a Universe in which Our Policy Preferences Are Elevated to the Status of Natural Law" way, in the early 90's. After The Great Purge, when all the libertarians and anti-imperialists where cleared out by diktat, it became just another empty-headed shill for the Marie Antoinette crowd.

I choked up, I'll admit it.

Thanks. I have never actually seen that footage before. Wow. Again, thanks. :)

The maximum contribution allowable by law is $2500 per election. You can use Paypal to send me your contribution and I'll consider running. :D
Enter the race, and who knows what I might do! ;)

After all, you usually don't make sense, so you'd be an improvement over most of Congress!

Huh, I haven't seen anything that actually made this sound like bad news for the Dems, not so much because Kerrey is a powerhouse, but because there was no other Dem candidate with a hope in Hades.

The prairie is getting a lot like the south for Dems, and the northeast for Repubs: nobody in the pipeline. This is another bad consequence of the alignment of ideology and regional tribalism: the polarization is self-reinforcing. It used to be that a strong up and coming pol with no ideological convictions would look at the field above him and pick the party that was thinned out. Now that everything is being cast as angels and demons, you don't see that as much. Hopefully the social issues fart bubble will burst and it will start to happen again.

that was an EPIC temper tantrum. :D Whether drug-assisted or not.
Not sure about the video-doctoring allegations, I missed it. I don't know anything about the guy or his widows, actually, except that he was an alleged "conservative blogger."

"Widows"? Was that just a really fortunate typo? :)

The really interesting thing about Breitbart is that although his ahem "work" was utterly discounted and loathed by the Kos crowd, apparently lots of them knew him personally and thought he was an hysterically funny guy. This used to happen all the time in DC -- the demagogues would thunder from the pulpit about the Fundamental Threat to the Country the other side represented, and then they'd all get drunk together in the same bars after hours and laugh about the poor dumb true believers, bless their ignorant hearts.

Then those people started coming out of Liberty or Regent (or Bennington or Reed), and they started smoking their own stash. There are still get togethers among staffers, but the media shill types and to some extent even the guys who should really know better, the lobbyists, have become the same sort of zombie wind-up toy they send marching to the polls every couple years. Depressing.

So here's to Breitbart. He appears to have been one of the last of the truly corrupt cynics. A nation weary of sincerity turns its lonely eyes to you.
