2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

You guys having fun with the WCHA refs yet? Wow that was a terrible call saying the net was off.

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

Rule 6-18-c-12:

A goal shall not be allowed "If the goal cage has been moved or dislodged. The goal frame is considered to be displaced if any portion of the goal frame is not in its proper position (e.g., frame must be completely flat on the ice surface, goal posts must be in proper place and affixed securely in place with its pegs)."

It can certainly be argued that the frame was not completely flat on the ice surface and the frame was not in its proper position. It actually looks like the right call, as far as it goes.

So even if that is why they called it, shouldn't there be a penalty on Union? He knocked the net off himself, he wasn't pushed into it by a State player.

Yes.

You can't call a penalty off the replay, though; you can only rule it no goal. That's something that probably needs fixing in the rule book.

Except the net wasn't knocked off. It barely even MOVED.

That call was utter crap. Pure and simple.

According to the rule (6-18-c-12), the goal doesn't count even if the net "barely even MOVEs." Any MOVEment at all means that the frame is out of position.

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

The way I saw it, it appears the referee lost sight of the puck, blows the whistle when the goalie squeezes his legs together - at the same time the puck reappears from between the goalie's legs, stick action forces puck in the air and then is whacked in by MSU. I agree goal should not count, but I don't agree with the explanation. It seems like a cop out that they disallowed the goal because the net moved.

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

If Union holds on, 2 minutes left, they advance.

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

I don't agree with the decision to leave the goalie in net there. Should've pulled him.

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

Wow. Is Union that good, Sparty that bad or just one of those underdog held off the stronger team games?

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

Union is now one victory away from surpassing St. Cloud State's NCAA win total in about 7 fewer attempts. Nice going Union! :D

State has been flat every time they've had a break in action. They were flat at the GLI (and were somehow 50 seconds from winning it still) with a three week break, they were flat against Miami with two weeks off, and they were flat again against Miami in the playoffs after a first round bye. I was hoping the trend wouldn't continue today but it looks like it did.

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

The rule needs to be rewritten. I can't imagine college coaches support the way it's written now.

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

i think the call was a good call according to the rule book. But do I agree with the call and the rule book, no. I dont think it should have been a penalty either because he was trying to block the shot and hit the net while doing it.
