Re: 2012 D1 BCS thread - Be VERY careful or I'll go all Priceless on you.

So, apparently Notre Dame is headed to the ACC for all sports (minus football and hockey) and will play 5 games/season against ACC schools in football. Considering their yearly games with Navy, Stanford, and USC (assuming BC will be one of the 5 ACC teams they play each season), how do you all think that will alter their rivalries with the B1G schools?

Wait... what? Really?

Notre Dame did have a rivalry with Miami (FL), and of course does with BC. So at least 2 of the schools make sense in football.

It's a good Basketball fit for them, as they go to a top conference.

I guess they're never coming to the Big 10 then.

Obviously that's because they aren't good enough academically.

The Michigan game might go away. Both sides make noises every few years about taking breaks.

Michigan State and Purdue get more out of playing Notre Dame than vice versa, so they'll keep the series going at almost any cost.

Just saw the news report.

Do they get to pick and choose their FB opponents? There are some awful ACC football teams.

As JF_Gophers mentioned, they have played Miami (FL) on occasion along with BC. Notre Dame used to play Georgia Tech quite a bit (according to Notre Dame, the Irish lead the series with the Yellow Jackets 27-6-1). Keep in mind that Pitt is also joining the ACC for football, and Notre Dame and Pitt have a pretty strong rivalry. Throw in a game against one of the top football teams (read: Clemson, FSU, Virginia Tech) and that would be a pretty good lineup for the Irish. My guess though, is that there is some sort of rotation in place for the 4 teams (assuming BC is an every year type thing).

FWIW, the ACC is currently ranked 4th (according to ESPN) in Conference Strength, just ahead of the B1G for football.

For full disclosure, I am a huge Clemson fan, and root (almost) unabashedly for the conference in football.

If UConn joins the ACC, they need only 3 more teams to form the ACCHL.

I see Purdue and MSU staying as well as Navy. Thats 8 games there with the 5 from the ACC. I could see a Stanford/USC rotation playing each one every other year leaving them with 3 games to play whoever (Air Force, Army, Oklahoma, Washington/Washington State, Michigan/Big 10 teams, etc).

They're not giving up the Stanford or USC game. The article says as much.

It'll be real interesting to see what nonconference games Notre Dame hangs on to and which ones they drop. I could see the Michigan game getting dropped, though I'd hate to see it, as it's one of the hallmark games of the early college football season. I'd be surprised if they dropped USC, as that's such a longstanding and high profile rivalry game. If that one was dropped, what would they do with the Jeweled Shillelagh? Purdue and MSU are long standing games also, but at least nationally don't have the same profile. I assume Purdue might be important for being a nearby rival?

Ah. I saw a different article the never said anything like that. So Purdue, MSU and Michigan. At least one if not 2 will be dropped. I dont see them keeping Michigan and speaking for myself I would drop Purdue as well.

Re: 2012 D1 BCS thread - Be VERY careful or I'll go all Priceless on you.

Ah. I saw a different article the never said anything like that. That is tough then. If they keep USC, Stanford, MSU, Purdue and Navy that only gives them 2 games to really work with. One of them will likely be dropped or only get an occasional game every few years. MSU, Stanford and USC would be the most likely to be kept.

I see Purdue being kept over Michigan State and I see the Big 10 games being the first on the docket for disposal if they need more.

I tend to agree with you here. The USC game is going to be held every year. I could see Stanford going to an every other year type agreement, as there isn't the tradition of the USC-ND game, and the Irish are going to have to cut somewhere. I think Navy stays on the schedule. I think Purdue stays on their schedule, and I think MSU stays on the schedule every year. That leaves the Michigan rivalry that, IMO, either gets cut or is an every other year type agreement, which would leave a schedule something along the lines of...

Navy
Purdue
MSU
Michigan/Stanford
ACC 1
ACC 2
ACC 3
ACC 4
ACC 5
USC
Some combo of 2 other games (read: Air Force/Army/Northwestern (or other B1G))

Considering that the Irish already play a few ACC games/year anyway, I don't think their schedule will be all that much different, especially if they decide to continue playing Michigan and Stanford every season.

In other news, Minnesota plays Western Michigan next. Will they go 3-0 before losing the rest of their schedule?! :D

They're keeping Stanford, USC, and Navy. Not sure what wasn't clear.

Notre Dame official said the school's top priorities in football scheduling moving forward will be to retain a West Coast presence -- games against USC and Stanford -- and the annual game with Navy.

Nothing in that says that they will play Stanford every year (although a strong indication that they will), just that they will play an annual game with Navy. I could see Stanford dropping to an every other year type agreement in the future.
