2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Has North Dakota ever played an outdoor game before in its storied past? This came up over beers the other night here in Omaha for obvious reasons. Somebody opined no. My guess is that it has to have happened at some point. If the answer is no, I'd be incredulous.

Any feel for how many North Dakota fans will be a making that trip here in February? People keep telling me "the entire state" will be here. I've heard, anecdotally, that more than 7000 tickets have been sold for the outdoor game already.

A completely educated guess on my part is that UNO will designate the Friday night indoor game on February 8th as this season's "sell out" night. It will be on national television on the NBC Sports Network (recently moved to Direct TV's basic lineup to channel 220), also now known as the Nebraska-Omaha College Hockey Network, at least as far as Minnesota fan is concerned:

Getting under Minny's skin rules. It's good to be the king.

As an aside, I'd be willing to bet some pretty big money that the night we open our new arena that you'll be the opponent.

I don't recall the Sioux ever playing in an outdoor game unless they did in it's early stages when hockey first started at UND. As for the outdoor game I can see a huge contingent of Sioux fans making that trip. I would guess it would be 70/30 in favor of UNO fans.

The king of what? 2nd tier channels? I'm happy with MN's tv arrangement.

Sorry to interrupt, carry on, folks.

We're humble enough here in Omaha to realize that we don't exactly compare favorably to Minnesota in terms of our respective program's success, legacy, or heritage--yet.

So you'll have to forgive us if we take a little joy in anything we do (even if only inadvertent, as in this case) that gets under the skin, even if only a little bit, of one the marquee teams in our conference.

We could always use more haters. It nourishes us. :D

I'm not sure if you have noticed but most gopher fans are a bit arrogant.;)

In case anyone here is connected with siouxsports.com: i was looking at the rankings and it seems to have given RPI the loss last night and Mercyhurst the win. RPI won 4-2

Pretty hard fought 3 points earned this weekend. It's hard to say which goalie played better. Saunders put up 42 saves with 4 GA, Gothberg put up 28 while blanking them after a rough 1st period. I can't imagine many teams being an easy 4 points in the WCHA this year, so I'll gladly take 3.

MacMillan (albeit from a small sample size) seems to be the right guy to pair with Kristo and Knight. Kristo put up 5 points this weekend and definitely seems to be the go to guy on this team, as we all were hoping. MacMillan scored 2 goals Saturday, including the game winner, while on the Knight, Kristo line. Whereas he only had 2 shots all of Friday while paired with Gaarder and O'Donnell.

I hate to gush, but I felt that Grimaldi deserved to come away with more than 1 point this weekend. There was quite a few times this weekend where he hit a pipe, the goalie made a nice save, or the play was just a little off. I saw him throw the puck off of a teammates stick and almost in twice this weekend. I don't think the player or the goalie even knew that was going to happen. The biggest issue is clearly turnovers, but that should come with time and chemistry.

Next 4 series will tell alot about how this team will be going into the break. 3 of 4 on the road starting with the Irish in South Bend who just got done sweeping Michigan at Yost Arena. After that it's off to CC then home to DU then back on the road to Tech before they are off until Holy Cross comes to the Ralph Jan 4. Truthfully 5-3 or 4-4 would be alright by me. In order to do that they need to tighten up the defense. A bit sloppy to say the least right now.
