2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

Rick's not one of my favorites, but I agree with you completely. I caught HNIC's highlights on NHL Network. Bob Cole may be 77 or 78, but he's still got it.

As for Edwards yelling at Hamrlik to GET UP -- Foster Hewitt and Danny Gallivan were spinning in their graves. I've been watching hockey for more than 50 years and I've never heard anything like that, at least at the NHL level.

That was pretty funny. I can see your point. It's just that the bar for homerism in Boston has been set really really high. That call was probably as close as I've seen anyone come to pulling a Tommy Heinsohn...

The heck with Foster and Danny, Fred Cusick was calling on Gotteramdung upon NESN.

"Montreal trying to nurse RIDICULOUS calls out of the referees!"

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

They were before my time, but I remember CBC ran classic HNIC during the lockout and I got to appreciate them. I'm also a student of broadcasting history so I like that kind of stuff.

Sam Rosen is my favorite, but I still think Cole can bring it like you mentioned, Steve.

I guess I'm somewhat biased, having grown up in the 60s sitting in front of the B&W TV every Saturday night. Being from Toronto, it was Foster and Bill Hewitt calling the Leafs. I used to have arguments with my Montreal cousin about who was better - Foster Hewitt or Danny Gallivan.

As a broadcasting student and especially today, I have come to realize they were both the best. In my mind, Hewitt, Gallivan and Dan Kelly are still the holy trinity of hockey broadcasters, but YMMV.

Edwards and the other screamers that are unfortunately the norm around the NHL these days couldn't carry their water bottles.

We'd like to welcome you aboard Red Wing Airlines Flight 2011 with service to Winnipeg. Please turn off and stow all electronics and leave your seats and tray tables in their upright and locked position, and enjoy the flight. We'll be in the air shortly.

Ahem

That was a nice shot, though. Got to give Schlemko (sp?) some credit on that one.

So just when I'm about to give up on the coyotes and call it a night, PING! BAR DOWN! I looooove it! One of the sweetest sounds out there; beautiful:)

(Shouldn't be long until Detroit buries another one..)

Detroit's veteran leadership shows come playoff time, they are phenomenal in the postseason.

That's why I like Rosen. Does he get excited? Yes, but it's appropriate excitement unlike that boob Edwards. I hate ESPN, but they were light on when they jettisoned him.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

I miss Detroit having a real rival. Even Chicago doesn't feel like much of one. The Avs thing was a brief 5-6 year fling, and once the Wings beat Roy like a bass drum 7-0 in Game 7 it was basically over. The Leafs stink and play in the East now. The Sharks and the 'Nucks haven't won a Cup yet.

We just sort of absorb the rest of the league's general hate these days.

There. That's better.

for me it's detroit. I grew up an Avs fan as I didn't have the Wild, and then grew to the Wild as the hometown team. *ing 'wings.;)

*ing gophers, too.;)

Grew up an Avs fan? What are you, 12?

This. Jesus, I watched the Wings before Yzerman and still remember the brutal Wings teams in the early to mid-80's, where anything better than 1-7 was a good start. I think it was 84-85 when we had our 40-point season, and Ilitch was giving away cars just to get more than 4,000 people to come watch that sad-sack team.

Can we please get Gary Thorne on more hockey broadcasts?

No, you're not. The Wings are going to get housed in the 2nd round against SJ.

Pretty much

I'd like to see the Sharks play more than 12 minutes of non-****ty hockey a night in the playoffs before I think they'll do something other than lose to the Kings in 6.

Edit: Detroit's penalty kill is getting housed by the 23rd ranked power play in this series. Good thing Phoenix can't compete at 5x5.

There. That's better.

True. The Game 7 arsekicking was the spike in the coffin. It was slowly constructed throughout the series, including McCarty's hat trick in Game 1, and the famous Statue of Liberty goal in Game 6.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

Kunitz has a 10am phone call for his elbow. Downie will follow right after for his leaping charge.

The NHL has to be just tickled that the big story every night is whatever vicious looking play could get someone suspended.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

Obligatory :D :

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

They're off on the road to Manitoba!
They certainly do get around!

;)

They ought to throw everyone for a loop and move the team to Kansas City.

Edit: Hell, the prospective Winnipeg owners have already said "We aren't using Jets"

They ought to lose their chance at a franchise for that alone.
