2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

This is also good news for when the CBA is up next season. Im sure that was a concern for NBC, and the new TV deal should put to bed any lockout/strike issues.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

I am happy Boston came away from a building they have done jack in all year. Penalties played a role in their earlier debacles, but they rose above that and didn’t let penalties undo them. This win is a step in the right direction, but I am sure there is plenty going on in the coaches offices. They played 40 minutes of solid puck, their special teams were not too good, and their gap control was awful especially on the two goals they let up. They played the trailing forward better and saved several chances which Montreal exploited in games 1 and 2, so that’s encouraging. Continued use of the end boards, be it zone breaks or cycling were also good signs. Montreal has trouble handling the bigger boston forwards.

Trying to keep the reffing comments civil, but to say that refs do NOT call a different game up there would just be silly. I think they tightened it up a bit, but seeing some guys on Montreal flopping around expecting a penalty is a joke. Than when you have a guy leading with his elbow and leaving his feet, its clear these guys think they can get away with more.

Hypothetically, the longer term allows the NHL to consider moving Atlanta or Phoenix to Canada without immediately causing TV issues in the US. The two teams only appeared on VS. 6 times (Phoenix 5, Atlanta 1) in the regular season though.

I think the biggest problem with Jenerette is that he's a radio guy. They use the same pbp for tv/radio. He'd be a great radio guy because you'd only have to hear him on the radio network. I think with Pegula around there will be some changes to the next broadcasting contracts, i.e. let's not just take the audio from the MSG feed and play it on the radio.

The B's haven't won in la Belle Provence since September of 2009. So it's been a while. While we're on the subject of Jack Edwards, I'm not a huge fan but not because he's a giant homer - is he really worse than Tommy Heihnsohn - but because he gets way too excited by the Bruins gets scored on which is a very odd thing for homer to be. His pet phrases are hilarious; "cocks and fires", "soccer pass" and "a muscular defense".

Probably comes from his ESPN days, where he had to be an unbiased announcer.

Kunitz and Downie each get a game.

I don't know how it's done exactly, but when I spun the wheel at NHLWheelofjustice.com, it came up with the same results.

I hope the creator is fine tuning it as we go; if he gets too good though it may become like the PWR predictor and the NCAA (where the possible rankings made up by one is legitimately used by the other).

One of my friends posted this point on his Twitter and I know Prez brought it up, but the worst part of the deal is no Gary Thorne calling games. :(

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

Some more details from NHL.com

"he agreement also calls for the NBC Sports Group to televise 100 regular season games per year and introduces a national NBC broadcast on Thanksgiving Friday. The announcement was made today by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Sports Group."

"In the regular season, NBC will continue to broadcast a national "Game of the Week," along with its coverage of the NHL Winter Classic and "Hockey Day in America." Versus will telecast an exclusive national "Game of the Week," plus NHL Premiere Games, NHL Faceoff, the NHL All-Star Game and any future NHL Heritage Classic outdoor games in Canada. NBC and Versus remain the exclusive home of the Stanley Cup Final.

The NBC Sports Group's commitment includes building a new studio for NHL Network at its existing facility in Stamford, Conn."

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

In addition to that, NBC has promised that every playoff game will be on national TV (on a yet to be named cable network), and has said they'll be renaming Versus within 90 days.

It will be re-named "NBC Sports Network"

That was the worst part of the *last* deal. I'm sure he enjoys hockey - it's where he got his start (@Maine, in fact). But when ESPN lost hockey, he wasn't going to wait by the phone, keeping himself available.

He's got a full-time gig doing Orioles play by play. I know he still gets to call the occasional game on ESPN, but that's it. Even if ESPN did get hockey back, the playoffs conflict with baseball. Are they going to buy him out of the O's deal, too? Assuming he would even consider it...

Gary Thorne has said he'd go back to NHL in a heart beat, but only if he is still able to keep his Orioles gig which would be tough unless he can work out a Sam Rosen type of deal where he misses an Orioles game or two a week to do a national telecast for hockey.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

I had the pleasure of meeting Gary Thorne last summer. I was at work (work at the Jetport in Portland, ME). I didn't recognize him at first. I asked his name so I could check him into the flight and he goes, "I'm Gary Throne."

His voice is so recognizable...I knew then, haha. He laughed at my reaction. I pretty much said, "Yes...yes you are."

Real nice guy. We talked hockey for a while, and I got him to say, "RAYMOND BOURQUE!"

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs: Can the goalies be stopped?

Honestly, Thorne is a bit loud for me. On a random Tuesday night game in February, it gets old.

But in the playoffs, when the intensity picks up, it's a perfect match. Favorite call was probably in the ANA-NJD series, when Kariya left the game with a mild concussion, then returned and scored. Plays like that actually deserve the Thorne-yell. :)

The spot should end with:

What if Harry Sinden believed that you could increase payroll and still increase net revenue?
