Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

To echo NMU, I don't think marchand embellishes like subban.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

I saw Marchand mature in the 2nd half and the playoffs. Plays hard, and yeah he can dish out the cheap shots here and there, but he doesnt dive/embellish. He had 6 goals in the first half of the season, and finished with 21. 11 Playoff goals, and to be honest, the Bruins wouldnt have won the cup without the rookie stepping up. With all due respect, Marchand plays a complete game of hockey. Old time hockey, getting under the skin and taking shots when you can.

I agree with 95% of what you wrote. What I am troubled by is that Marchand - someone who has been suspended already and has filled notebooks with disrespectful comments about other players - is lauded, while Subban - never suspended, never speaks ill of an opponent - is torn down as "cocky", "needs to grow up". Really? As Bruce Dowbiggin wrote:

One final thought on rookie Marchand: How come when he abuses a superstar he’s applauded by Hockey Night in Canada and the media as a savvy kid who gets under the skin to win. But when Montreal Canadiens rookie P.K. Subban did the same, we were told by the same voices that he was a punk with no respect who needed to be taken down a notch? Is it because Marchand is a Bruin, a sacred squad on Hockey Night, because Sedin is a European or because Marchand is white while Subban is black, or all of the above. Take all the time you need to answer.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Yes, there are things marchand does that I don't like. Happy?

Happy? I'd say I have more respect for you.

Edit: Further, I don't dislike Marchand at all. I'm sure if her were on Montreal I'd love him. This is less about Marchand and Subban, and more about how the media has treated each. I'll let you draw your own conclusions about what the genesis for that is, but I think it's fairly obvious.

Filled notebooks with disrespectful comments about others is most certainly a gross exaggeration.

I expect people to hate marchand--doesn't bother me at all if they do. Habs fans should expect others to hate subban. That's how this thing works.

Anyway, I'm not taking that guy seriously after playing the race card.

In all honesty, I think its playing in Montreal that causes the hypocrisy. He is supposed to be the savior of Montreal who hasnt won a Cup since the early 90s. Im sure if Montreal showed up in the post-season they would praise Subban. 1 Goal last season in the post-season to go along with 2 this season.

Plus, can we not pull the race card? (Directed towards the media)

So was Mike Riberio. Meanwhile, Carey Price was supposed to be the next Patrick Roy, and before that it was Jose Theodore.

The Montreal media is funny like that.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

A few things....

* Most Montreal fans don't think of Subban as "the savior" at all. Given the choice of locking up one of either Price or Subban, 90% would take Price.

* I must be misreading your post about Montreal/Subban not showing up in the post-season, because that's ludicrous. The team that went to the conference finals last year and was an OT goal away (cough, three times, cough) from eliminating the eventual Cup champs this year? Or Subban - who with 2 games of NHL experience got called into action in the playoffs and gave the team 20 minutes a night lasy year, and scored 2 goals in 7 games this year? What more do you want?

* Why is it that if someone makes a valid observation about two very different reactions to very similar situations it has to be automatically reduced and dismissed as "playing the race card"?? Is it really that far fetched to think that race may actually play a role in this?? The "playing the race card" card has become a quick and easy way to discredit someone else's argument, and that shouldn't happen here. "Playing the race card" used to be reserved for egregious examples of someone suggesting race as the basis of a phenomenon. Now we're obfuscating worthy discussions because they touch on race?!? Sad.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Was with you until the last graph. I'll make it pretty simple by saying I don't think race has anything to do with it. You may think it's easy to dismiss it, but as we've seen here, it's just as easy to throw it out there when it isn't warranted. I don't think it's warranted here and it's one of the few things I'm actually offended by.

And you have every right to that opinion (that it's not racism at play). What I can't get behind is being dismissive of that it's even possible and somehow unworthy of discussion; or that it's somehow offensive to wonder if race could be a factor... as if we're so evolved in 2011 that race couldn't possibly be at play. The writer didn't play the race card; he simply said player A does X and is lauded, while player B does X and is denigrated. Those are facts; things we know. What we don't know is why player A is celebrated and player B is not. I don't think that race is somehow out of the range of possibilities here.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

I've heard that this will be made official tomorrow: the Chicago Wolves will be the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks.

Yes, the junior Canucks will be parked in the backyard of the Blackhawks. :D I'm ecstatic about that, I love having an AHL club in my backyard, and I cannot wait for the bitter Hawks "fans" to ***** about this.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Babcock and ex-Thrashers coach Craig Ramsay were spotted chatting in a hotel lounge earlier today, in what could've been a job interview to fill one of the Wings' assistant coach vacancies.

I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I'd like to think a lot of people are beyond the racial aspect of this. I would agree that there are probably some people who see it differently because of race, but I also think the majority don't take that into consideration--that's really what I was getting at. So, yes, it's possible, but I don't buy it here. To say the writer didn't play the race card is incorrect in my opinion. There are varying levels of doing it...

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

So, apparently the NHL isn't concerned with the Bryzgalov deal because there were no years after 40, and no years <1M. I guess the blueprint on cap circumvention is pretty obvious.

Tonight's official draft order.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Is there anyone on here who likes what Philly did?

On the surface, no. I don't think they "won" either deal; and the return on Richards was less than it should have been, IMHO.

However, I think it somewhat depends on what exactly was going on behind the scenes; the details of which we may never know. It may have been untenable for them to continue on.

Unrelated, but something you may have interest in - read someone's blog today saying that there were rumors that the Bruins are interested in Wisniewski. That would be tough to stomach, and i think he'd be absolutely stellar on that team.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

And the reason New York is on the road for so long is because of renovations to MSG.
Oh duh, thanks for reminding me.
Subban - never suspended
BTW, how has he never been suspended? He belongs on the Ducks as dirty as he plays.
Is there anyone on here who likes what Philly did?
I do, but that's because I hate them and I think they're a lot worse without Richards, dressing room issues notwithstanding.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Reports are Winnipeg will be named the Jets. An announcement is expected later today. No word on the logo.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

I've heard the announcement later today is the Head Coach announcement (Claude Noel), and that the naming ain't happening until the 7th round of the Draft.
