You would hope that wasnt the case, and the idea that you have been a captain or assistant would make you more aware of what it takes to become one at the collegiate level, which of course would be the hard work that the 'indians " have to put in b4 becoming the captain , and of course most capts and asst. are top talent as well, I guess only time will tell, but as a Oz fan looks good so far as the recruits roll in.............hope to see more for oz and the other teams.....my only thought is diversity, as in players from other parts of the country/ies, different styles in different leagues, like out west/calgary etc, Oz stays close to home wish we could branch out a little, perhaps some more downstate players, we have been known to play some pretty good hockey ;=))

Why are NY taxpayers funding hockey teams for non residents? These guys aren't even Americans. A few would be fine, but check the rosters almost all Canadians, mostly from Ontario. There are several Junior teams in NY State why not give our tax dollars to them first? And don't tell me there is no talent here, look at all the d 3 rosters a lot of NY talent out there.:confused:

while i dont mind a few northerns on the team I have to agree, there is a lot of talent in NY, I remeber our 87 Oswego team, I think we had half the team from NY, buffalo/LI..a few from mass and 5 or 6 tops from the north, and 3 or 4 from Illinois.....I like the diversity as well as I havesaid b4, we meshed well, and it made for an interesting lockeroom

Look at the rosters of the four teams that made the frozen four this past year and tell me you don't need canadians to compete at the elite level.

This summer I plan on doing a short analysis of the "Canadian effect" depending on my workload. I'm thinking the Canadian effect will have statistical significance, but I'm going to have to run a bunch of models (I think) to make sure there's not a bias problem.

I think you will find a resounding statistical advantage for teams that have a high percentage of Canadians.

I don't doubt that, but I want to measure the effect of Canadian student-athletes on programs' success. I think I'm going to do an average of wins over the last 5 years as the dependent variable, with average # of Canadians on the roster, Public or Private (as a dummy variable), conference (another dummy variable, although there may be correlation with the public or private in which case I'll have to get rid of this), coach tenure (probably statistically insignificant), average roster turnover, and maybe arena proximity to campus (?), as independent variables. I'm going to need to do a lot of fine tuning, so we'll see how it turns out.

I think the issue you have to really consider is cause and effect reversal. Do programs succeed because they attract Canadian players, or do they attract Canadian players because they succeed?

I agree, I've been thinking about ways to account for this by running different models and the only thing I could really think of doing was to reverse the model and have # of Canadians on the roster as the dependent variable and using wins as a lag variable (at 1,2,3 years). I need to see what resources I'll have available to me this summer to see what I can run.
