2011 Division III Commitments

Re: 2011 Division III Commitments

I think the issue you have to really consider is cause and effect reversal. Do programs succeed because they attract Canadian players, or do they attract Canadian players because they succeed?
Interesting thought.Where does NEC fit in to the thought process.
2010-2011 Roster
Canada 5
Sweden 3
Finland 3
Russia 1
Croatia 1
England 1

Overall Record 7-17-2
Conference Record ECACE 5-13

I'm not sure the players went or were attracted to NEC to succeed. My sense is that they were identified and recruited by NEC and attractive financial aid was made available

Do financial aid packages attract international students or are a majority of international students attracted for other reasons and then find they qualify for financial aid packages?

This is a great site! Thank you to the people who are involved in keeping it updated, I found a D-1 site and I think this one is better!

In regards to Plattsburgh I agree always having a new team and always doing very well is a true testament to coach Emery, however what does all of the turnover say about the school? The recruiting? Why are there so many mistakes being made at Plattsburgh. With Emery being such a good coach one would think that with a veteran team like Neumann from a few years ago or Norbert this year Emery would be even better?

Re: 2011 Division III Commitments

I think it says a lot about the recruiting! Emery brings in so much talent that if the players are not getting the ice time they want they can go somewhere else, and be one of the best players on the other team. Some guys cant handle Emerys way of coaching. Some players have to be treated like babies and not men. You can ask just about any former player and they will tell you how much of an ***** Emery is while playing but how much they respect him after and how he made them grow up. And this is mild compared to 15 years ago.

He has no respect for the other team, though - he won't shake hands :D :D :D Just ask any newbie :D :D :D

Herb Brooks didnt shake our hands when we, Oswego, beat him in the NCAA semis in 87'.....not sure what any of it means

I don't know either, but it frequently comes up among people who don't like Platty/Emery.

Please excuse my ranting post, but I read too much of this garbage on the board.

Your definition of the way men should be treated is skewed. For anyone that thinks a coach needs to scream and throw tantrums to be respected by his players, well, I'm sorry for you.

You may not have a chance to see Babson in the SUNYAC, but anyone that does see them, take notice of Jamie Rice on the bench. He remains calm throughout the game, offering just the right amount of criticism and praise, just the right amount of emotion. His players respect him, and they continue to want to play for him. There isn't much attrition on that team, and they always play their best in the postseason.

I can't wait for the day when these so-called 'great' coaches that belittle their players are out of the sport. A lot of you give these men way too much credit. Do they know the game? Yes. Can they teach the game? Yes. However, they also have the nicest facilities, the biggest recruiting budgets, the most support from the administration, etc. Players are going to come to their schools. Good players. Players that will help them win, which, in turn, makes these coaches look much better than they are.

I'm sorry if no one agrees with me, and I'm sorry that you've been convinced to feel that way. Your programs would be much better off with a younger coach that has a little more perspective on what really matters.

Re: 2011 Division III Commitments

Garbage? Please....were you one of the whinny types when you played too? Couldn't take being told you messed up, or you needed a "good game" pat at the end of the game? Firey coaches aren’t any good? Yea, Bobby Cox, Vince Lombardi, Bear Bryant, Herb Brooks, Pat Burns....they were all horrid coaches for pushing their players and having outbursts....Some guys have to be coddled and nurtured every step of the way. Maybe the only thing “skewed” is your liberal view on things. Let me guess you think parents shouldn’t spank their kids and inmates should be allowed more freedoms too….Did you cry when Herb Brooks made his players stay after the game and do wind sprints after a game? Did you get upset when he yelled at his players and called them every 4 letter word you can think of when they messed up? Disney couldn’t show the real Herb Brooks or it would have been the first Rated R Disney film made. Yet he was a horrible coach by your means of thinking. Obviously his “facilities, recruiting budgets and support from the administration” made him a good coach…Emery takes good players and makes them great.

Yes I have seen Babson play, several times, and I’ve seen a lot of coaches come and go in 25 years. Some players need that “just the right amount of criticism” because they can’t handle being told they messed up. Some players need the “oh its okay, you’ll do better next time” instead of the “you ****** up”…..That doesn’t make Rice a bad coach at all. I am not saying coaches who walk the fence are bad or no good, there are tons of great coaches who never let their blood pressure rise pre, during or post game. My comment was more on the players who can’t take it. We’ve had several at Plattsburgh.

Emery doesn’t “battle his players” he gets his players ready for battle. Emery has to battle several hurdles in his career. He took over a program on NCAA probation and WON an NCAA title. He doesn’t have all the luxuries private schools have, and continues to win.

The success at Plattsburgh has hinged on 3 things, Emery, Houle and Moffat. Some coaches can put on a nice act on the bench, and can be totally different in practice and behind the scenes. Emery wears his emotion on his sleeve or the redness of his balding top. Not many coaches would bench their star player for the conference championship, and one of the best in school history, for not passing a test even when they still passed the class….or they missed curfew by 10 minutes. Emery makes his players accountable off and on the ice. Some guys can’t take that. He holds his players to a higher standard then a lot of coaches. And while you may only see some of his blow ups, you fail to see some of his other more sensible moments. Like I said, ask any former player and see what they tell you. Just because you can’t deal with a coach like Emery doesn’t make him or anyone like him “garbage”.

First of all, I didn't call Emery garbage. I called your comment about being treated like babies or men garbage.

I'm just saying that there's another way to do things. You don't have to be a maniac to coach. It has nothing to do with players not being able to handle it. They shouldn't have to handle it.

Listen, I now that you will never agree with me, and you can call me or my style and opinions any name you want, but at least I'm willing to ask questions and put the other side of the story out there. I can only hope that there are some people around that feel the same way.

Re: 2011 Division III Commitments

Huh? Please clarify.

Emery has had several years where he has lost a lot of talent besides graduation. Just in the past 5 years....

Kevin Galan - To Geneseo for school
Piere Luc Belanger - Probably would have been POTY
Bryan Hince - Oswego thanks you
Joey Wilson - Early Grad stats speak for themselves...
Ward Smith - Concussions one of the best D-Men in SUNYAC

These are just some off the top of my head. Plattsburgh has had probably 2-3 players on average leave the school for more playing time, this on top of the normal 4-5 graduating players each year, makes what Emery has done impressive. Had all the players stayed, Plattsburgh would have been scary good. Instead Emery has to go out and get who he can get late in the recruiting process and make the best out of them. Several of these players have waited till the end of the season, or close to it, to leave leaving Emery with little time.
