2011 Division III Commitments

Re: 2011 Division III Commitments

Good link for DIII (and DI) recruits. Another one for Oswego, Eli Kim-Swallow of the St. Michael's Buzzers.

Also, I see that Cards noted Rodrigues was headed to Oswego back in February, I missed that. The official announcement from the Markham site did not come out until April 10th. Cards is way ahead of the game! Rodrigues was out of the line-up for the last 6 months of the season (as noted by Prez that he only played a handful of games). I couldn't find any mention of an injury on the web. Norm???

I remember seeing someone posting Eli-Kim Swallow's name earlier this year too.

Re: 2011 Division III Commitments

A new one for Oswego, Eli Kim-Swallow of the St. Michael's Buzzers. He had 11 Goals and 20 assists this season between North York and St. Michaels. He is not a real big kid at 5-10, 185 but I guess he is a solid penalty killer and could be a good role player for Oswego plus he has a pretty cool name.

Re: 2011 Division III Commitments

A player in the EJHL this season committed to play for a NCAA college hockey team for next season but the player played 4 games in the QMHL during his junior career. I thought if you played major junior you became NCAA ineligible.

I'm not certain of the rules, but I think it's something like this: Sit 1 full NCAA season for your first Major Junior game, then 1 game for every game played after that. So, by that reasoning the player you speak of would be eligible to start playing in the fourth game of his Soph year. Can anyone clarify? I know Blake Barkwell on Adrian played a couple games of Major Junior hockey and had to sit a bit.

So, it IS possible to play NCAA hockey after Major Juniors. It's just that if you stuck at that Major Junior level and played a full season or more, well then you'd have somewhere between 50 - 200 games played, rendering yourself ineligible for life for all intents and purposes...

I believe it only makes you ineligible for athletic scholarship.

No, you lose a season of eligibility for each season that you play. I believe the one extra game per game played was dropped a couple of years ago.

But any time played in major junior causes forfeiture of any athletic scholarship money even if you have some playing eligibility left. Correct?

Re: 2011 Division III Commitments

Well a couple of years back NEC had a player with 220 plus Major Junior games on their roster and pleaded dumb on the knowing the rules and the NCAA let them off the hook....:)

The most recent regulation concerning Major Junior Competition - the game for game thing is gone...

14.2.4.3.3 Major Junior A Ice Hockey. An individual who participates on a Major Junior A ice hockey
team shall use a season of intercollegiate participation for each calendar year or sport season in which the
individual participates, regardless of when such participation occurs (including participation during high
school enrollment). The individual must also fulfill an academic year of residence (see Bylaw 14.02.10)
prior to being eligible to represent the institution in intercollegiate competition in the sport of ice hockey.
(Adopted: 4/21/09)

So it looks like a 2 for 1?
So do we get this
2 lost years of eligibility (lost year and year of residence served consecutively)
and 2 years of play

or is it this?
One lost year of eligibility (lost year & year of residence served concurrently)
and 3 years of play

???????

Question pursuant to this: while a former Major Junior player sits out his first year of school, does "represent[ing] the institution in intercollegiate competition" mean that he's still allowed to participate in practices, a la redshirting? I would imagine fluffy bunny issues could easily crop up if players were on campus but expected to avoid hockey entirely.

The year in school without playing does start his 10 semester clock.

In D3, if you practice with the team after the first game, you are competing. Thus, a violation. No pink fluffy bunnies for you! I think that such a player could play on a club team as long as it had no affiliation with the varsity team. In DI the player could certainly do a red shirt thing

Plattsburgh picks up a kid (Zach Blake) from Wellington of the OJHL. Thought Wellington was an Oswego recruiting hot spot? :)

Re: 2011 Division III Commitments

I've heard that the little birdie is currently enroute or soon to be enroute over the Atlantic Ocean. My guess would be to look for it within the next couple weeks.

I would have to agree with you. (Oh, and the birdie will be en route at 7am CET, or 1am ET, tomorrow. :) )
