2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

You're 20+ miles west of me and you're getting 70? My Weatherbug says:
Weather Undergound is revised now: "Showers likely. A chance of thunderstorms...mainly in the evening. Very windy with lows in the mid 60s. North winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent." Much better forecast. :)

The Weather Channel is once again setting a great example for evacuees by having their weather guy standing in the rain on Atlantic Beach, NC.

Their cum sponge back in the studio isn't hard to look at, though.

That "cum sponge" as you so eloquently put it, is somebody's daughter. I daresay you would not like to hear or read your daughter described as such. I certainly wouldn't.

Please. It's not like he's referring to a teenager. The women working for TWC are probably in their late 20s-30s - and were certainly selected for their positions at the station for reasons that go beyond weather knowledge. :p

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

My bro's family lost power in VA a few hours ago. Hoping he's OK.

If they prepared, they'll be all right. Just a huge pain being without power for an extended period. Cold beenie weenies isn't my idea of fine dining, but it'll due 'til the power comes back on. :)

20+ miles East of Kepler. Rain, little wind. But the local TV stations are going all out in Irene coverage. Way over the top. Funny OpEd in today's WaPo claiming that TWC is more gloom and doom than the "news" channels.

Edit: There's a football game on CBS @ 8. Wonder if I'll get it or some more gloom and doom?

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Here we have nothin'. And I mean nothin'... it's overcast, zero wind, an occasional rain drop.

Thus far it's been a complete kaput, and by that I mean GOOD.

Edit: Weather.com now has our wind prediction downgraded all the way to 35. I couldn't be happier.

OTOH, the VA and MD coasts are now predicted to have extremely high storm surge, because the winds, rains, and tides are all maxing out. So it's not great for everybody.

That figures -- you're almost in WV. :D

I guess that means that we won't have that much water flowing down the Potomac in a few days.

I've experienced three hurricanes up close and personal. And though I'm far from an expert, my problem with TWC and others is it seems like all they can report on are worst case scenarios. Very little context and perspective. This is good business for them, that's why you see the "A" team reporting, and not the weekend clods. It's a tough balance, I'll grant you. But tone counts. And the tone of the coverage for Irene and for almost any major story you can think of is: gloomy, dark, dangerous. Part of the problem is the voracious appetite for "reporting" when you go "wall to wall." You wind up, occasionally getting some pretty thin gruel. "Now with a report on the cancellation of the corn shucking bee by the Lakawana marching and chowder sociedty, here's Cutie Mc Sweetheart." When you assign a reporter to something it becomes a story, no matter whether it is or not. Because when you're in "wall to wall," you've got to fill up those minutes. And you've got no room for dry holes and false starts. Everything's relevant. Everything's important.

Think back to when JFK, jr's plane went down. Essentially we had two facts: he was supposed to be someplace Friday night. And he still hadn't arrived. But since they went wall to wall, the cable news channels had to find something to put on the air 'til the wreckage was found or he turned up safe. So over and over and over again we saw the footage of him saluting his daddy's coffin, and other archival footage which had nothing to do with the matter at hand. Ultimately we had our worst fears confirmed. But not before trivial matters (the founding of George) and biographical details were recalled in painful repetition.

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Are you in Rockville?
Keep going East on Randolph Road. Stop at the seminary and you're almost there.

Things picking up. Winds up to 20 MPH and the rain seems to be coming down harder, but I have not lost the satellite signal. But no stinkin NASCAR, or NFL Football. It's all disaster coverage. Irwin Allen, where are you!

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Still no change, though the lights are on at Ocean City.

If WeatherBug is to be believed, 35-40 MPH winds tonite with gusts to 50....

And, if you're near Fenway Park, the Red Sox are now letting you in for free. Enter through Gate C.

Edit: Why is it, when any government official has a news briefing, there are a bunch of people standing behind him/her looking important???

Funny. When we originally moved into the area our choices were Centreville, VA (where we lived) and Wheaton. We would have been neighbors.

Be glad you did not choose Wheaton. The HS there is not too good, though now they have a consortium where you can pick 1 of 4(?) HS. But I'm in the next HS cluster over. 2 of my kids chose the local HS, 2 went to DeMatha.

And at 10:19, there goes the satellite with rain fade...

@HurriicaneIrene on twitter:

"when I get drunk my friends call me a sluricane"
"After blowing the east coast I guess you can call me a whoricane"
"Well atleast the windows are already boarded up in Harlem"
